Intended Audience This course is designed for practitioners who work with pediatric patients in need of lower extremity orthotic solutions. It is open to all members of the clinical team – including orthotists, physiotherapists, and physicians. Special emphasis on optimizing DAFO braces with optional features to maximize fit and function.
Course Content: Lesson 1 | Introduction to brace optimizations (approximately 20 minutes, concludes with a five-minute quiz)
• Introduction to brace optimizations o What are optimizations? o Why use optimizations? o Case study example with before-and-after video
• Optimization Index
o Overview of resources for selecting optimizations o How Technical Support can help
• Using optimizations to customize for each patient o An orthotist shares how she chooses optimizations o Orthotist explains optimizations for case study from earlier in lesson
• Two “check for understanding” questions
Lesson 2 | Choosing brace optimizations (approximately 20 minutes in length, concludes with a five-minute quiz)
• Case study example showcasing the two most common categories of optimizations o See how to use patient information and assessment videos to select appropriate
optimizations o See why particular optimizations were chosen o See how to order optimizations chosen o See how each optimization improves fit or function
• Walk through all optimizations in “protection for boney anatomy” category • Walk through all optimizations in “pronation control” category • Case study example/”check for understanding” (six questions)
o Learners use patient information and assessment videos to select appropriate optimizations
o Learners explain why particular optimizations were chosen o Learners practice ordering optimizations o Learners explain how each optimization improves fit or function
Lesson 3 | Optimizations practicum (approximately 20 minutes in length)
• Three patient case study examples. For each patient: o Learners use patient information and assessment videos to select appropriate
optimizations o Learners explain why particular optimizations were chosen o Learners practice ordering optimizations o Learners explain how each optimization improves fit or function
• 15 “check for understanding questions” throughout practicum
Concludes with Final Test (approximately 15 minutes)

Needs Identification
Effective orthosis design and application for the neurodevelopmental pediatric population, with application to the adult population as well. Special emphasis on optimizing DAFO braces with optional features to maximize fit and function.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
• Know which optimizations are available for different fit and function needs. • Know the most common categories of optimizations. • Be able to use the DAFO Optimization Index to select appropriate optimizations to
maximize brace effectiveness and comfort for each patient. • Be able to use the DAFO Optimization Index to communicate optimization requests on
the order form. • Know that selecting optimizations carefully for each patient is more important than
simply using many optimizations for every patient. • Know what to do if they would like to use optimizations that are not listed in the DAFO
Optimization Index.
Content Methodology
Students may log in to take the course at any time. Each twenty-minute lesson features curriculum presented via audio, video, illustration and text. At the completion of each lesson, students take a quiz to assess their learning. At the conclusion of the course, students take a final test, which takes approximately 15 minutes. The course, quizzes and final test can be retaken multiple times. A copy of the final test questions is attached to this application.

Participants are encouraged to provide feedback and are given an opportunity to do so at the end of each lesson within the course via email or our online discussion forum. We also provide contact information for the Cascade Dafo Workshop Coordinator so that participants can ask questions and contribute suggestions and comments.
