ABOUT

King Kong Theatrics: Theatre for the Future! - is a new Youth Theatre Company based in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs dedicated to producing quality youth productions.

Students aged 10 -18 are invited to take part in weekly rehearsals (over 2 terms) run by industry professionals and experienced teachers, who are at the top of their field. At the end of the program, students have the opportunity to perform in a Broadway Show at a theatre with all the bells and whistles!

King Kong Theatrics not only offers an exciting performance opportunity, but also provides students with the skills to become an elite performer. Students will have the chance to develop and explore skills in drama, singing and dance. As the students rehearse to put on a musical, they will also be encouraged to build on their self-confidence, collaborative skills and self-discipline.

Most importantly we strive to help young people be their best possible self by providing a platform in which they feel safe to explore creative endeavours and build respectful relationships with other students who have the same interest and passion.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Over the duration of the course, students will participate in weekly rehearsals as we prepare to put on our musical! When the course begins, students will be taught audition technique in a safe and calm environment. If students wish, they can then audition for one of the major roles. Every student enrolled will be part of the production. Students will then rehearse all the different aspects of putting on a musical. They will develop the different characters found in the musical and explore how dance, music and drama can shape the story. Students will be encouraged make strong choices in regards to how the final musical will be presented. As production week looms, students will get to rehearse in the theatre and experience what goes on behind the scenes of a live performance. Finally, students will get to perform in a real theatre with lights, costume make up and a supportive audience.

Currently, the course only has space for 30 enrolments, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.

PRODUCTION

King Kong Theatrics is proud to announce it inaugural production will be SEUSSICAL JR!

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

SEUSSICAL JR will be presented at Doncaster Secondary College Performing Arts Centre, June 1st - 3rd!

AUDITIONS

Every student who is enrolled in the course will be part of the production. During the first two weeks of rehearsals, students will learn how to analyse a script, create character and will learn a song. If at the end of this two week period the student wishes to be considered for a lead role, then auditions will take place to determine who will play the main characters. If the student misses out on gaining a major role, they will still be part of the chorus.

Nicholas Kong - Artistic Director of King Kong Theatrics

Nicholas has had a passion for theatre ever since he was in a primary school production as Woody - The King of Trees. It was in the theatre that Nicholas overcame his shyness and found confidence and a devotion for the Arts that still exists to this day. He was cast in his first professional production 10 years ago, when he was one of 14 people selected out of thousands to be part of the first Australian Production of ‘Spring Awakening’ with Sydney Theatre Company. Since then, Nicholas has appeared in Kismet and Pirates of Penzance at The Production Company, Jamie in Mary Bryant with Magnormos, John in Anything Goes with Opera Australia and more recently Merrily We Roll Along with Watch this at the Melbourne Theatre Company. He has also been part of national advertising campaigns for Coles and Sportsbet.

Nicholas has directed many productions for companies around Melbourne, these include: Next to Normal, A Little Night Music, Gypsy, Into the Woods and Sideshow.

Nicholas has a Bachelor of Music (Voice Performance) from Melbourne University. When not performing he is also a primary school teacher, responsible for the Performing Arts Program at Roberts McCubbin Primary School in Box Hill South. At Roberts McCubbin he has been responsible for mounting productions of Seussical Jr, Shrek Jr and The Little Mermaid Jr. He is extremely excited to be combining his two passions of teaching and performing with the creation of King Kong Theatrics and hopes he can can pass some of that enthusiasm to today’s youth!

Lauren McCormack - Choreographer

Lauren’s love for theatre started at a young age when she sat on the edge of her seat when watching a production of The Phantom of the Opera at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. After that the passion grew and eventually lead to her performing in many productions around Melbourne.

Most recently, Lauren performed in Les Misérables with CLOC Musical Theatre. Previous roles include Carrie Pipperidge in Babirra Music Theatre’s production of ‘Carousel’, Grace Farrell in Babirra’s production of ‘Annie’, Rosa Budd in ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’, Sarah Brown in ‘Guys & Dolls’, Dainty June in ‘Gypsy’, Anne in ‘A Little Night Music’, Hodel in CLOC’s ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and Laurey in ‘Oklahoma!’

In 2005 she completed her Bachelor of Music, majoring in voice at the Melba Conservatorium.

Lauren also has a great love for dance, beginning Calisthenics at the age of 5. She was a competitor and eventually a coach of the sport for over 20 years. Lauren is also trained in multiple dance styles including ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz.

A primary school teacher by day, she has directed and choreographed many Broadway Junior shows at Templestowe Valley Primary School, often with casts of over 400 students. The joy and excitement of seeing students perform, especially those who discover their hidden talents in the process, is what makes her passion for theatre and the Performing Arts continue to grow!
