Father Paul’s Reflections on the Readings
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
There was the beggar who sat at the temple gate everyday begging for his living. One day he hears that the King is coming to the temple and he is all excited. When the king came, he does a strange thing. Instead of giving alms, he begs for alms himself. Perplexed, the beggar puts his hand into his bag and reluctantly puts a few grains of rice into the king's hands. Thanking him, the king de-parts, putting back to the beggar ’s bag the grains he received, much to the disappointment of the beggar. At the end of the day the beggar returns home frustrated. But when he pours out the con-tents of his bag to check his day's collection, to his great surprise, he discovers a few grains of gold among the rice. How he wished he had giv-en more to the king! (Ravindra Nath Tagore)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus miraculously feeds five thousand people in the desert with five loaves and two fish. Jesus takes the five loaves and two fish, blesses, breaks and asks them to share them with others. The miracle that Jesus per-forms makes them ready to give rather than re-ceive. Jesus could have fed the crowd, without the help of his disciples, and their small re-sources; but He needed their involvement; he needed whatever they could offer. When we share the little, that we have, and God does the rest. The Gospel episode reminds us that what we have will never be enough to satisfy our own needs, but in sharing what we have with others we receive much more than we give! Today’s readings invite us, to become humble instru-ments, in God’s hands, by sharing our blessings with our needy brothers and sisters.

During these uncertain times, we ask you to consider making a gift to our Caring
Crusader Campaign, which will help as we prepare for the upcoming school year.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are busy making upgrades to keep our students
and teachers safe and healthy.
We are also planning for scenarios that may be difficult to face, including:
· Students who need additional financial assistance to return due to loss of
household income
· Increased school expenses due to the need for PPE and sanitization products
· Additional cleaning procedures
· Need for operating assistance to offset potential income losses
A gift to this campaign will help with all the above scenarios and instill confidence
that CCS will overcome this pandemic together! Our overall goal for this campaign
is to raise $25,000 by September 8, when school is set to resume. So please consid-
er helping us to achieve that goal on a quick deadline!
If you would like to make a gift to the "Caring Crusader Campaign", please mark on
your check Caring Crusader Campaign or visit our secure website https://
corpuschristiwheeling.com/giving/ . If you have questions, please call Advancement
Director, Miranda Zambito at 304-830-1572. Thank you for your meaningful sup-
port of Corpus Christi School!

The Catholic Spirit now has a weekly electronic edition sent free of charge, by e-mail to those who subscribe.
The new electronic edition was made available to also help cut the cost of printing, and is sent every Friday morning. Many have signed up, and say they prefer this new version. Anyone can sign up for the e-list by sending an e-mail to [email protected] with “The Catholic Spirit e-list” in the subject line. Please consider removing your name from the print edition. This helps to make sure that your fellow Catholics around the state who need the print edition, such as those without internet access, and the elderly, will continue to receive it. Just note in your e-mail request for subscription that you would like to be removed from the print mailing list and only receive by e-mail.
Those who sign up are asked to please provide the name and address to be removed and the e-mail to send the e-version of the newspaper.
With the ultimate goal of enhancing communication while operating within a new budget to help cut costs, The Catholic Spirit has moved from printing twice a month to once a month. All print publishing dates are on the first Friday of each month. The Catholic Spirit monthly print version will continue to be delivered free of charge to all Catholic households in West Virginia.
By joining the e-mail distribution list, readers will receive the weekly e-version as well as the electronic version of the monthly print edition of The Catholic Spirit.
