From The Pastor’s Desk

making someone’s holiday bright and sunny…well, you get the picture? Even more important is to worship our Divine King. How many parents have told me that the best Christmas present would be for their family members to come back to the Church and receive the sacraments each Sunday! As you already know, there will be many of our loved ones who will join us for our Christmas masses this year. Wouldn’t our hearts leap up with joy knowing that they have decided to come back home to the Church??? Wouldn’t we feel such peace and elation when we find out that someone in the family is resolved to lay down the hatchet and work towards peace and reconciliation?

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” This is what a chorus of angels sang on Christmas night. “Peace,” but not as the world understands it. This is a peace of heart, knowing that God loves us infinite-ly and has saved us from our sins. Perhaps, it would be very wise to spend some time before the beautiful nativity scene, whether in our parish church or in your own home, and contemplate the peace and joy of that Christmas night. In the dead shivering cold of a winter’s night, the Prince of Peace was born. The love of God radiated from that little stable. Mary and Joseph were in ecstasy as they knelt before the baby Jesus. The cattle were lowing near the manger as their breath kept the baby warm from the cold of night. Off in the distance, perhaps, Mary and Joseph could hear an otherworldly song from the heavens. An en-chanting star stood over the stable and emitted a glowing, peaceful light. And then, slowly but as-suredly, the shepherds began to appear one by one at the door of the stable. They dropped to their knees in adoration. Their eyes were rapt in joy and awe as they beheld the Christ child. Hopefully, this Christmas we will strive to be like these poor shepherds. It would be very good for us to recognize our own spiritual poverty and real-ize that the most important gift we can give Jesus on His birthday is our hearts full of true love. May Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph bless all of you this year, and may the grace of God fill your hearts with joy. Fr. Murphy

Dear Parishioners, A very Blessed and Merry Christmas to you and your families this year! We come now to that wonderful feast of love, which was revealed to us 2,000 years ago and continues to reveal to us each year. “For God so loved the world that He gave us His only Son…” (John 3:16). On March 25th each year, we celebrate the Annunciation whereupon Mary is visited by the angel Gabriel and willingly and obediently accepts her vocation to be the Mother of Our Savior Jesus Christ. Nine months later on December 25th, Mary’s fiat is re-alized when she births the Son of God in a poor and humble stable. Sadly, when Christ was born into our world, the world did not know Him. The gospels make it clear that a few shepherds watching their flocks at night and three wise men came and visited God’s miracle of miracles. The rest of the world went on to their typical, mun-dane business, not knowing how God was visiting His people.

During this modern era, we approach Christmas from the materialistic mentality. In fact, the Christmas commercial season begins earlier and earlier each year, now even before Thanksgiving. People rush to the stores to purchase the latest technological gadgets, stylish clothes, toys, high definition television sets, athletic equipment, cars, books, bicycles, and you name it! While these gifts are nice to give to our loved ones, they do not satisfy our craving for true Christmas joy! These gifts will become old and no longer fash-ionable. We will get tired of them and throw them away. So many toys are broken in the weeks after Christmas day. I find it amusing that after all the presents are opened, the kids have more fun pushing each other around in the emp-ty boxes!!!

So, it seems that the solution to our craving for true Christmas joy is making peace with those in our families we have alienated, working for jus-tice in our world, feeding the hungry and home-less, visiting and comforting the sick and lonely,

Christmas Mass Times

Christmas Eve 12/24 4 PM & 8 PM

GOD'S PROMISE The lengthy passage from Samuel is a wonderful expo-sition of God's promise to the house of David: that his throne would forever be gloriously occupied by his de-scendants. Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David. The prophet Nathan, speaking in God's name, poetically turns around David's plan to build a house for God, and announces God's plan to build a "house," that is, a dynasty for David. From this house of David will come the Messiah, the Christ, not in king-ly splendor as David ruled, but as a humble man, des-tined to rule forever and over all. When God gives a gift, it's amazing what we are given--so different from what we ever could have imagined.
