LEAVE A LEGACY MONTH

June is “Leave a Legacy” month in the Diocese of Norwich. It is a wonderful time to remind parishioners in the Diocese about the value of charitable estate planning. Some people choose to mark their legacy by requesting gifts made in

memoriam to the parish, school, ministry or the Diocese in lieu of flowers upon their passing. Others include a bequest in their Will to their favorite Catholic organization. Still others are interested in establishing an endowment with the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich to benefit a diocesan organization. Most recently, Mr. Leo Barron of Gales Ferry established The Leo E. and Lorraine A. Barron Endowment within the Catholic Foundation to support our Lady of Lourdes Church. We are blessed that Mr. Barron’s generosity will allow him to help his Church into perpetuity. If you are interested in learning more about how you can leave your legacy and support all the good works that the Church is involved with, please contact Mary Ellen Mahoney, Development Manager, at (860) 886-1928 or email [email protected].

CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER LARRY

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

A few years ago I was able to attend a godchild’s

graduation from high school. At the impressive and rather

wordy ceremony two students, a young man and a young

woman, selected by the class to speak at their graduation, gave

a speech. Both were impressive; but the young woman’s speech

spoke of a book titled “Being Wrong” and how it spoke to the

challenge posed by the “’cuz it’s true” limitation. She recounted

how difficult it was to make the transition from believing that

everything I believe is the way it really is to critical thinking or

asking why something is the way it is.

It made me think of hearing someone say many years

ago that the “seven last words of the church” are “That’s the

way we’ve always done it.” A fresh approach is what we’re

working on in our tri-parochial religious education program.

Although it was overwhelmingly well received this past year,

there were some suggestions on how to improve the program

and some more that will emerge, I’m sure, in the end of year

breakfast meeting with the catechists that will be incorporated

into next year’s program.

We’ve talked at length and from time to time about the

weekend Mass schedule. The anticipated events scheduled for

the Jilson Green may present an opportunity to try out

something that we’ve talked about but never tried and that’s a

Sunday evening Mass. What about moving the 4:30 Saturday

Vigil Mass at Saint Mary’s to Sunday at 5 or 6 PM just for this

July and August? There would still be a Vigil Mass at 4 PM at

Saint Joseph and ours would be the only summer Sunday

evening Mass in the area. For younger families who are busy on

Saturday nights and Sunday mornings this might provide them

an opportunity to have a Mass they could attend together. It’s

not perfect, you say; but, hey, it’s OK not to be perfect. God

alone is perfect. We’re a work in progress and it’s OK to ask

“Why?” and “What if…”. Have you heard the story of the Thanksgiving turkey

with short legs? Well, it seems that one day in a kitchen just like

ours there was a family getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner.

The turkey was in the oven getting all golden and juicy. When

the bird came out of the oven one of the teenagers asked “Hey,

so why are the ends of the drumsticks cut short? The parent who

was cooking said “I always do that ‘cuz that’s the way my Mom

did it”. So the teen goes over to Grandma and asks why the legs

of the turkey are cut short.

She says the same thing so the curious teen goes to the

living room and asks, “Great Grandma, why did you used to cut

the legs short on the Thanksgiving turkey?”. “Oh, dear”, she says

pleasantly “I always used to cut the legs short because the oven

in the house your Great Grandfather and I lived in was too small

for the turkeys we needed to cook to feed the family so I always

cut the legs short so I could close the oven door.”

I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t be afraid to ask

why. Don’t be afraid to be wrong. Don’t be afraid to apologize.

Don’t be afraid to fall short of perfection. Don’t be afraid of

change. Let’s just trust in God, love one another and do our best

and everything will be OK.

Devotedly yours in Christ,

Fr. Larry

No tengas

P. Larry
