Struggling With Temptation

Consider God’s holiness, mercy, omnipotence, omniscience, and especially divine goodness. We actually cannot imagine how great God truly is in Himself. Our minds cannot grasp anything infinite, especially God’s attributes.

All of these divine characteristics are embodied in the Incarnation: Jesus is the embodiment of divinity. The Church teaches that Jesus is at once fully God and fully human.

Now, consider the audacity of the devil to think he could actually get Jesus to succumb to his temptations. Didn’t Satan know? Wasn’t he aware that Jesus was God in the flesh?

The Seven Deadly sins can be remembered by the word PEAGLAS: Pride, Envy, Avarice, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, and Sloth. All seven stem from pride. Pride is the chief sin, the elevation of self above all else to the position rightly belonging to God.

Satan has an abundance of pride, and this may account for his foolish attempt to get Jesus to give in to temptation.

Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, and His being tempted by Satan show us two things. It gives us a model of how to meet temptation, and it shows us how Jesus identifies with the human predicament.

Each time Satan tempts Jesus He responds by quoting Holy Scripture. Of course, Satan also quotes Scripture as he tries again to tempt Jesus, but apparently Satan doesn’t truly know God. Knowing Holy Scripture and truly knowing God are two ways of confronting temptation.

Jesus must have genuinely considered the offers made to him by Satan, otherwise he wasn’t truly tempted. Jesus knows how we struggle with temptation because He struggled with it Himself.

Satan did know Jesus to be kingly. We call Jesus the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Satan appeals to Jesus’ kingliness and offers Him the world’s kingdoms.

Satan comes to tempt us where we are. That is, he attacks our weaknesses. If you know you have a weakness, you can expect to be tempted there. Remember how in the Act of Contrition we say that we will avoid the near occasions of sin.

God will forgive us our sins, but He requires us to do two things. We must repent, and we must forgive others. We all know in our heart of hearts if we are truly repentant, if we are truly making every possible effort to avoid the near occasions of sin. Of course we will not achieve moral perfection in this life, but we know in ourselves if we’re resisting temptation of if we’re giving in.

Jesus knows what it is to be tempted. Believe and trust in Him, and follow His example. Amen.

¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones! En JesúsEn JesúsEn JesúsEn Jesús Padre DavidPadre DavidPadre DavidPadre David

The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting Easter Memorial’s. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the 7:45 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. Envelopes for donations are located in the back of the church in the narthex. Donations may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Deadline for intentions is Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.

The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

An adorer is needed for:

Wednesday 7:00 a.m.—8:00 a.m. Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

Saturday 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

miercoles 7:00 a.m.—8:00 a.m. sabado 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

sabado 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

Forty Cans for Lent St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry

Lent is upon us, and fasting, prayer and almsgiving are a very important part of this season of the Church. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is always in need of foods to distribute to the needy in our community. This is a wonderful way for all of us to participate in almsgiving and assist our neighbors. Here are some suggestions:

Beans/Dry & canned Pasta/Dry & canned Canned vegetables Rice/All types Soup/Dry & canned Canned meats

While the Pantry usually has a good supply of canned corn and green beans, more is always appreciated.

One item of food each day of LentSA small sacrifice with a huge yield!

Collection boxes will be located in the Narthex during the Lenten season.

e NotreA former youth minister and teacher at Notre Dame school has donated a big box of books from her student days to the library. Marion Worthington reviewed one of them, A Short Primer for Unsettled Laymen, by Hans Urs von Balthasar,

translated by Michael Waldstein. “All true Catholic Christians suffer today from the confusion within their Church.” The first sentence of the first chapter of the book is only slightly less true than when it was written in 1980. This small book, 134 scant pages, is not an easy read. Yet there are so many problems of meaning and interpretation which are addressed in a clear way that time and close study are more than rewarded. Maybe no-one can now disagree with the premise that “we have gone astray”. The same regret that St. Paul expressed in never achieving the good he intended is part of our everyday experience in examination of conscience. Why have we not yet built the city of God here and now? The author suggests “because nature has been turned into mere material for technology”. While this is certainly evident in our polluted landscapes, there is also a prevalent failure of acceptance, empathy or concern for our fellow creatures. I include Homo sapiens with other carbon-based life forms. Balthasar also discusses “Mary – Church - Office” with sympathy and insight. This provides good lessons in our present societal upheavals which are often polarizing rather than connecting and healing. This translation is a gift also; careful juxtaposition of the English words “cheering, not sheering” are a delight referring to the treatment of priests by the laity while pointing out that neither is entirely appropriate. This is a book to be “read, marked, learned and inwardly digested.”
