The Things That Are God’s – Part 2 The Pharisees and Herodians asked Jesus about the poll tax. This was a tax exacted by the Roman government on every male person from the age of fourteen through sixty-five, and by every female from the age of twelve through sixty-five. The amount of the poll tax was one denarius, which happened to be the rate of pay for a day’s labor for the typical worker, like those who were hired to work in the vineyard. The Jews resented the tax as much as anyone resents taxation. But for them, God was the only king. Their nation was a theocracy. The idea of paying a tax to any earthly king amounted to an admission of the validity of his kingship which in turn amounted to an insult to God. So the question the Pharisees and the Herodians put to Jesus was a particularly highly charged dilemma. But the answer they got from Jesus was definitely not what they had expected. He defused the bomb they had set. Jesus foiled their scheme and raised the level of discussion to a higher plane. Some things do belong to the State. Jesus points out that the coin has Caesar’s image on it, signifying it belongs to him. Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s. But simply rendering unto Caesar what already belongs to him is not Jesus’ primary concern. He goes on to say that we are to render unto God the things that belong to God. What things? What belongs to God that we are to render unto Him? Jesus does draw a distinction: coins bearing the image of Caesar are what belong to Caesar and therefore are to be given back to him. What then, are we to give back to God? The Greek word used in this passage for the appearance of Caesar on the coin is “eikon”, probably pronounced in the Greek more like eye-kone. The Greek dictionary lists several proper translations for the word eikon, the first two being likeness and image. Let’s review the creation account in the first chapter of Genesis. God has created the sun, the moon and the stars. He’s brought forth green plants bearing seed, and the fishes, and the things that crawl upon the earth. Next he brings forth birds, and every living thing, and cattle and all sorts of beasts of the field. And He blesses them and bids them to be fruitful and multiply. And then, in verse 26, God says: let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Jesus could just as well say “show me a human being. Whose image and likeness does he or she bear?” We would have to answer, “God’s.” We were created in God’s image. That means we share God’s capacity to make choices freely, to love, to procreate, to live in harmony with creation and with God. We bear the image and likeness of God in that regard. Therefore, we must render ourselves to God. Not only we were created by God, we were redeemed by God incarnate after we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death. To Be Continued . .

Las cosas que son de Dios – 2ª Parte

Los Fariseos y los Herodianos le preguntaron a Jesús sobre el impuesto de encuesta. Este era un impuesto exigido por el gobierno Romano a todos los hombres desde los catorce hasta los sesenta y cinco años, y por cada mujer desde los doce hasta los sesenta y cinco. El monto del impuesto de encuesta era de un denario, que resultaba ser la tasa de pago de un día de trabajo para un trabajador normal, como aquellos que fueron contratados para trabajar en el viñedo. A los Judíos les molestaba el impuesto tanto como a quienes les molestan los impuestos. Pero para ellos, Dios era el único Rey. Su nación era una teocracia. La idea de pagar un impuesto a cualquier rey terrenal equivalía a admitir la validez de su realeza que a su vez equivalía a un insulto a Dios. Entonces la pregunta que los Fariseos y los Herodianos le hicieron a Jesús fue un dilema particularmente cargado. Pero la respuesta que obtuvieron de Jesús definitivamente no fue lo que esperaban. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING/FORMATION If your child is interested in becoming an altar server, training/formation begins on Wednesday, September 26th at 6:45-7:45 p.m. in the church. Any child in 4th grade (or 9 years old) and up is welcome. At least one parent or guardian must attend with the child at every session. Come join the Catholic Way Bible Study Thursday September 6th as we explore the book of Genesis! We will examine the themes of creation, sin, salvation, covenant and the calling of the Chosen People. The first eleven chapters deal with God and humanity at large. The remaining ones address the special role of the people called to be His very own. You will delve into the unforgettable characters of Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Jacob and Joseph. In addition to the core themes, the study will discuss the relationship between faith and science, the Theology of the Body, moral absolutes versus cultural relativism, the question of evil and so much more!

We welcome all! Whether you are new or experienced in studying the bible, you will gain a deeper understanding of Sacred Scripture while making new friends! All you need is your bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church! We meet every Thursday from 10am-12pm from September through April upstairs in Kemper Hall, Room 205. We do break for the holidays from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The study is $9 which covers the cost of all lessons. We welcome all women of the parish to come to the first Daughters of Notre Dame meeting for the 2018 and 2019 term. Meetings are the first Monday of each month with a devotion presented at each meeting by one of the committees. A light dinner is also served.

Altar Servers Paul Turner

Altar servers assist at mass. They may carry the cross, candles and incense in the procession (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 100). At the preparation of the gifts they arrange the corporal, purificator, chalice, pall and missal on the altar (139), and assist in receiving the offerings (140). They present the water to the priest or deacon (142), who adds some to the wine. Servers may incense the priest and the people (75). They wash the priest’s hands (145). They may ring a bell and incense the Body and Blood of Christ during the elevations (150). They may exchange peace with other ministers (154). After communion they may remove the vessels (163). Servers have their own seats (294), and they show their reverence by their dress (339), by bowing and genuflecting when appropriate (49, 90), by singing and joining in the responses (40). The General Instructions of the Roman Missal never suggests that the server hold the missal so the priest can read the collect and the prayer after communion—surely an oversight. The server usually performs this function because the priest is supposed to be at the chair rather than the altar, offering these prayers with his own hands extended rather than holding the book (124, 127, 165). Someone probably assisted as an alter server from the earliest centuries, but the first documented encouragement for students to do so dates to the ninth century Synod of Mainz. Permission for girls to be altar servers was implicit in the 1983 Code of Canon Law, and explicit in a 1992 instruction of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Notre Dame Catholic School Annual Festival

The festival is quickly approaching! As a parish school we need all your support!

We ask that you help us in the following ways:

1) Pray for a successful weekend – A community filled with faith, enthusiasm, community, fun and fundraising – and of course good weather!

2) The early bird drawing this year will be on September 5th with the prize again being $200 of lottery scratch off tickets. You should return your check for the raffle tickets and meal tickets in the envelope provided in your packet, PLEASE stick an address label or write your address on EACH of your raffle tickets AND on the return envelope – this will ensure that you are credited for your tickets. We are anxious to see who will be the big scratch off winner, so return your envelope QUICKLY! If you want extra bbq tickets and raffle tickets, they are available in the school office.

3) Start Baking your cakes and cookies. It is suggested that each parish family provide 2 cakes and 2 dozen cookies, but more is always welcomed! The Cake Wheel is extremely popular and is a WIN-WIN for everyone.

4) We are looking forward to this year's festival and we are looking for exciting new silent and live auction items. Please drop off your items in the church or school office.

5) Be prepared to say “YES” and volunteer a couple of hours at one of our booths or BBQ dinner.

6) We can still use your help! Please contact me if you are interested in serving on any of the volunteer teams, I will put you in contact with the appropriate chairperson: some of the areas include: cake wheel, Cake room, Kids Korner, BBQ Dinner, and Auctions. Cake wheel is still looking for volunteers, PLEASE call Anna at (830)955-2823 to volunteer.

7) We are also looking for a golf cart to use on the days of the festival, if you have one, please contact Katrina.

¡El festival se acerca rápidamente! ¡Como Escuela Parroquial necesitamos de todo tu apoyo! Les pedimos que nos ayuden de las siguientes maneras: 1) ¡Oren para que podamos tener un fin de semana exitoso—una comunidad llena de fe, entusiasmo, unión, diversión, para recaudar fondos—y por supuesto por un clima agradable!

2) El Sorteo anticipado este año será el 5 de Septiembre, el premio será de $200 en boletos de lotería para rascar. Deben devolver el cheque o dinero de los boletos de la rifa y los vales de comida en el sobre provisto en su paquete, POR FAVOR coloquen una etiqueta o escriban su dirección en CADA UNO de sus boletos de la rifa Y en el sobre—esto asegurará que se les acrediten sus boletos. Estamos ansiosos por ver quién será el gran ganador, así que devuelvan su sobre RÁPIDO. Si gusta mas boletos para la BBQ y rifa, están disponible en la oficina de la escuela.

I can’t do that. I don’t know my faith well enough to serve in this capacity.

While you would be exploring the many opportunities for your own faith formation you would also be

serving and helping in planting and/or nurturing the seeds of faith in so many, whether it be in our

children, youth or in our adults. We really need your help in many areas whether it be in preparing

parents and/or godparents at Pre-Baptismal preparation classes or walking with our children/teens in their

faith journey.
