How Hip Hop Started

Hip Hop started on the East of the lower class inthe urban areas, mainly in the African American

and Latino populations. It started on theplaygrounds with cross style jump roping. Eachtime the person jumped, they had to say a wordand create phrases that rhymed. From here it

evolved into emceeing and rapping.



Break dancing

The music side of hip hop started when DJ KoolHerc meshed two long playing discs togetherwith a turn table. He would use what is called aMC technique to encourage people to startdancing at his parties. The break dancing partof hip hop started from the dancers at theparties. These dances evolved to what is now

called break dancing.



Hip Hop Graffiti

Both graffiti and fashion played a huge roll in theHip Hop culture. Graffiti was a public art that was

used to display how the people felt about politicaland social issues as well as gangs to mark territories. The fashion of the hip hop culture waslargely used to express individuality.



Hip Hop Graffiti

As mentioned, Graffiti represent the visualpart of hip hop. It paints the way how musicflows. Graffiti artists were usually break dancers, emcees and DJs. At the hottest

parties you might have seen, there are graffitidone by artists on the wall, DJs spinning andscratching records , the emcee revs up thecrowd and the break dancers battle it out onthe dance floor. That is what we nowadaysknown as hip hop.



Development Of Hip Hop

In the early 1970s, DJ Kool Herc begin organizing dance partiesin his home in Bronx. The parties became so popular they weremoved to outdoor venues to accommodate more people. City

teenagers, after years of gang violence, were looking for newways to express themselves. These outdoor parties, hosted inparks, became a means of expression and an outlet forteenagers.



DJing

Turntablism refers to theextended boundaries andtechniques of normal DJinginnovated by hip hop. One of the few first hip hop DJ's was

DJ Kool Herc who created hiphop through the isolation of "breaks" (the part of albumsthat focused solely on thebeat). In addition todeveloping Herc's techniques,

DJ Grandmaster Flowers madefurther innovations with theintroduction of scratching.



DJing

Traditionally, a DJ will usetwo turntables simultaneously.These are connected to a DJmixer, an amplifier, speakers,and various other pieces of electronic music equipment.

The DJ will then performvarious tricks between the twodiscs that is rotating usingdifferent methods. The resultis a unique sound created bythe seemingly combined soundof two separate songs into onesong. Although there isconsiderable overlap betweenthe two roles, a DJ is not thesame as the producer of musictracks played.



Rapping

Rapping refers to spoken orchanted rhyming lyrics with astrong rhythmicaccompaniment. It can bebroken down into different

components. Rapping is easilydistinguished from spokenword poetry, which is usuallyperformed in time to the beatof the music. The use of theword "rap" to describe quick

and slangy speech or reparteepredates the musical form.
