A MoU for cooperation between CCOP and UKM
has been in effect since 19 July 2007
The signing of the MoU between CCOP and UKM
and its subsequent elevation to Cooperating
Organization
Activities supported and facilitated by the
Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the
CCOP, the Director General of the Mineral and
Geoscience Department, Malaysia
Introduction
The activities were organized to recognize
the importance of regional cooperation and
build capacity of geoscientists
Addressing issues related to regional
sustainable development. Especially on:
geohazards, disaster resilience city &
disaster risk reduction (3+1 events)
geoparks, geoheritage & geotourism
(1+1 events)

(A) Geohazards, disaster resilience city &
disaster risk reduction Programmes:
1. Malaysia Window to Cambridge at UKM
(MW2C@UKM) Series - Training Workshop on
Geohazards and Disaster Risk Reduction:
Communicating with Stakeholders. Date:
10- 12 October 2017, at the National
Geoscience Conference 2017 (NGC 2017)
Kuala Lumpur
Field excursion in Kuala Lumpur, Tambun,
Gunung Pass and Cameron Highlands.
The training focused on communication of
science to multiple end-users in cities
including planners, regulators and
insurers. Trainers comprised UK and
Malaysian experts with participation of
about 30 early career researchers from
the region

3. Malaysia Window to Cambridge at UKM
(MW2C@UKM) Series -Training Workshop on
Disaster Resilient Cities: Advances in
Meteorological Forecasting and Hazards
Assessment. Date: 28-29 June 2018 at
Hotel Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur
The focus was on potential efforts and
approaches for developing highly
relevant forecast products for climate
extremes. The training was conducted by
UK and Malaysian experts with
participation of about 30 early career
researchers from the region

(B) GEOPARKS, GEOHERITAGE & GEOTOURISM Programmes:
“Regional Geoheritage Conference 2018” on the theme “Geoheritages for
People”. Date: 2 - 4 April 2018, at The Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid Hotel,
Khon Kaen, Thailand
Jointly organized by DMR Thailand, CCOP, and The National Geopark of Thailand
In collaboration with the Geological Heritage Group of Malaysia (KWGM), JMG
Malaysia, UKM, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran”, Indonesia (UPN
“Veteran”) and Geological Society of Thailand (GST)
1. A side meeting on ASEAN Geoheritage Network was organized in
conjunction of the conference
2. The first forum of tripartite conference for Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand
countries. The main objective of the conference is to diversifie the role
of geologists and it deemed necessary to improve the most active role of
geologists in utilization of geoheritage in the form of geotourism and
public education within geopark as a driver for economic and society
well-being
3. Platform for discussion among government agencies and academia in
preparing the proposal for new geopark
