What is SciVal Experts?

SciVal Experts is an expertise profiling and research

networking tool that helps Researchers, Students,

Administrators, Managers and Senior leadership

identify experts and enable collaboration within their

institution and across organizations

What does SciVal Experts do?

- Searchable directory to identify expertise and further collaboration

- Understand ‘who knows’ what by researcher and department

- Provides accurate, up-to-date author profiles for all the researchers in the institution

"SciVal Experts gives us a comprehensive snapshot of our faculty’s research activities and makes it

easy to find experts in a given discipline for collaborative research. It is a great tool to introduce new

faculty to existing researchers and to spotlight potential faculty to collaborate on grant proposals."

Elsevier Fingerprint Engine

The core of SciVal Experts is the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine. Via the Fingerprint Engine, we can scan any

piece of text such as an abstract from Scopus or internal data provided by the customer (awarded grants,

for example) and use thesauri and a variety of Natural Language Processing techniques to analyze the

information, identify and weight the key concepts in the text and present them in a graphical representation,

which we call a document Fingerprint.

Step by step - How Does the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine Work?

1. Scan abstract

2. Identify concepts in abstract based on thesauri and apply Natural Language Processing (NLP)

techniques to accurately interpret text as if the computer were human

3. Weight concepts against all of the author’s abstracts and all abstracts in Scopus

4. Generate Fingerprint of document

Elsevier Fingerprint Engine

In addition to the Fingerprint process, we also have to ensure the publications are associated to the correct

authors, especially when names are common. We do this in two ways:

We disambiguate author names automatically via an algorithm. We use metadata like name, location, journal,

topics they publish on, who they coauthor with, to automatically group the documents together as precisely as

possible.

Then we have a specialized team that manually reviews and verifies all of the information to ensure all of the

publications are associated to the correct authors. This disambiguation process ensures the author profiles are

accurate, comprehensive and current.

• Automatic process – algorithm groups

authors by key metadata: name, location,

journal, topics, co-authors, etc.

• Manual process – Elsevier verifies

automatic groupings

• Aim is for a maximization of precision

(accurately matched publications) with a

high level of recall (breadth of

publications returned)

Aggregating researchers’ Fingerprints across organizational units allows for the

institution to know what individuals know and what groups know…

• What new publications and grants have been produced?

• What trends have emerged over time?

• Who is working together? • With what other organizations

(internal and external) are we collaborating?

• What do we know?
