Energy consumption - Passenger vessels
HVAC energy consumption – electrical load (*)
20-30% HVAC 70-80% Other
Up to 30% energy supply used for:- cabins- public areas- galley ventilation
50% Chillers 35% AHUs & fans15% Pumps
(*) average value When the ship is berthed in the port, the HVAC system becomes the main energy consumer.

ARKM20 monitors comfort requirements determined by users as well as ambient conditions (temperature and humidity), processing this information to get the most efficient chiller set-points.
To do this ARKM20 not only connects to the chillers, but also with devices, onboard control systems and onshore providing relevant information.
Chillers are designed for optimum performance in specific ambient conditions which may only occur 10% of the time, leaving significant room for improvement of chiller performance while conditions differ from design assumptions up to 90% of the time.
By optimizing the chilled water setpoint continuously the chiller energy consumption decreases significantly.

In a chiller, the electrical power absorbed by the compressormotor depends on the pressure difference that thecompressor has to produce.
Increasing the chilled water set-point, the pressure differencedecreases and therefore the absorbed power decreases too.
Increasing the chilled water set-point temperature by +1°C, theelectric power consumption decreases by 3÷4%.
Important note: the system does not change and affect theindoor temperature set-points.

How does it work – set-point change
Manual process ABB ARKM20The set-point is typically changed by onboard engineer/s depending on the season or climate zone.
ABB ARKM20 defines and sets the optimized chilled water setpoint every 5 minutes.
Variable conditions allow to optimize the setpoint:- night/day- port/navigation- empty/full of passenger- high/low humidity
Creates operational efficiencies
