STATEMENT OF NEED The practice of regional anesthesia continues to increase. Practitioners must maintain their skill sets while learning new techniques and remaining current on developments in the subspecialty. This program provides a forum for discussion of current concepts in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine while giving attendees the opportunity to learn from experts in intimate teacher-student workshops and to exchange best practice information.

TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is targeted to physicians, nurse practitioners, fellows, residents and medical students within the practice of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine for the orthopaedic patient population.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Hospital for Special Surgery activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course, the participant should be able to:

Describe anatomy as it relates to regional anesthesia. With this understanding, practitioners will be able to identify landmarks for appropriate placement of Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia.

Augment their skill set with methodologies to administer basic and advanced blocks and use appropriate techniques such as ultrasound guidance, nerve stimulation and parasthesia in their practice.

Review benchmark literature in regional anesthesiology and pain management from the past two decades and extrapolate the data that is still applicable to practice today.

Discuss the usefulness of new anticoagulants and identify the appropriate target patient populations in their practice who could benefit from these drugs.

Report additional approaches to discharge planning for patients with obstructive sleep apnea based on recent studies and best practices and make

informed strategies regarding these methodologies for patient care.

Express additional successful methodologies for pain management following dissolution of nerve blocks and make informed strategies regarding these methodologies for patient care.

Build their armamentarium of effective management strategies for challenging patients undergoing regional anesthetics.

ACCREDITATION Hospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CREDIT DESIGNATION Hospital for Special Surgery designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This program has been prior approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for 6 CE credits; Code Number: 1027538; Expiration Date: 5/18/13.

SPECIAL NEEDS The New York Palace Hotel is accessible for individuals with disabilities or special needs. Participants with special needs are requested to contact the Office of Continuing Medical Education at 212.606.1812.

“This (block workshop) was a superior workshop with very clear expectations and practical information.”

“The infraclavicular block is one I will try and employ in my practice. The presentation made it appear simple.”

As a result of attending this program, I will:“attempt infraclavicular blocks”“consider intra-articular injections”“enhance post-operative evaluation of perineural catheters”

“institute epideral protocols better suited to our patient mix”
