CONTINUING EDUCATION Guidelines Education Services is committed to providing quality educational programming to meet the needs of the employees of St. Boniface Hospital (SBH). Guidelines have been created to maximize our ability to provide these services most efficiently to all our employees.

Registration Registration methods and deadlines vary depending on the course. Most require registration to occur on the Manitoba eHealth Learning Management System (LMS). A few courses allow telephone registration. Please read course descriptions carefully to ensure a successful registration.

Registration Cancellation If you register for a course on the LMS, you must cancel your course on the LMS. To cancel your LMS course, find the course you want to cancel on your LMS “Learning Plan” and select the “cancel” button. You will get a confirmation email informing you that you have cancelled.

If you have registered for your course by telephone, please call the same number to cancel.

Last Minute Cancellation: Regardless of the method of registration, call Betty Thomson at 204.237.2231 when cancelling your registration on the day of the course.

Cancellation of the Class Education Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient registration or sudden facilitator unavailability. We are committed to providing you with as much notice as we possibly can. The notification may be delivered by an automated email to your work email address via the LMS.

Tuition Fees The majority of the courses listed are free to SBH employees and students. If a course requires the attendee to pay a fee to cover instructional material, it will be listed on the course description and must be paid prior to the course. Payment and receipt of tuition fees will be issued through Education Services (room N2040).

Professional Services (Contractors/Vendors) Orientation ALL VENDORS AND THEIR WORKERS PROVIDING “PROFESSIONAL SERVICES” TO ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL, OTHER THAN WORKING AT “CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS”, ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS TRAINING BEFORE WORK STARTS This training is designed to bring attention to the hazards Professional Services (Contractors/Vendors) may bring to SBH, as well as hazards they may be exposed to while working at SBH. This 1 hr. 2-Part orientation is targeted towards Contractors/Vendors and their employees who provide non-construction services at St. Boniface Hospital.

Part 1: Safety: Includes a review of St. Boniface Hospital (SBH) Professional Services information package, how to access the package in the SBH Internet, review vendors responsibilities as per SBH Professional Services: (Contractors/Vendors) Health & Safety Requirements (non-construction) Va-190 and SBH Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) staff access to work project.

Indigenous Cultures Awareness – Two Day Workshop ALL STAFF WORKING FOR WINNIPEG REGIONAL HEALTH AUTHORITY ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND GOAL Indigenous Cultures Awareness Workshop is a two-day workshop that aims to bridge understanding between health-care providers and their Indigenous patients and patients’ families. THE WORKSHOP This two-day workshop introduces a basic knowledge of the world views, spiritual and cultural values of Indigenous peoples, highlights historical and contemporary issues that influence Indigenous peoples, and honours the rich diversities within Indigenous communities. WHAT YOU CAN LEARN Increase awareness and understanding of Indigenous cultures in a health-care setting Increase ability to provide culturally competent and proficient care Gain knowledge to build a culturally respectful workplace Indigenous Cultures Awareness Workshop (ICAW) is the base workshop offered by WRHA Indigenous Health and acts as a foundation on which participants can grow their knowledge by taking additional workshops offered by Aboriginal Health Programs. In-Charge Person Safety Responsibilities and the Incident Tracker This is a 1½ hr. SAFETY-training session for any staff that may have In-charge responsibilities (anyone that directs other staff in their day to day work). This may include Directors, Managers, Supervisors, CRNs, Shop heads, etc. Part 1: The Presentation will provide information surrounding legislated requirements; where In-charge persons are directly responsible for the Health and Safety of any employees they direct. Tools and direction are provided so that In-charge persons can feel confident they are providing a healthy and safe work environment for their employees. Part 2: Process tips on how to describe a workplace incident or near-miss with all relevant details included. Part 3: The presentation will demonstrate the new “OH&S Incident Tracker” with actual examples and summary reports of incidents. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Course ALL RNs (including relief team nurses and casual nurses), RRTs, RMs and MDs WORKING IN L&D, LDRP, & NICU SHOULD ATTEND The program will help you learn to resuscitate newborns and be a valuable member of the resuscitation team. The course consists of an on-line exam and Instructor-Led 3 or 4 hour course.

The 4 hour course is for inexperienced providers who have not previously take and NRP course, whose resuscitation skills are used rarely, or who would like extra class time to practice. NEW providers who’ve never taken an NRP course MUST choose this course.

The 3 hour course is for experienced providers who have previously taken an NRP course, whose resuscitation skills are current.

WCCNEP Rhythm Course ALL NURSES WHO ARE ENROLLED IN THE WCCNEP, ADVANCED ASSESSMENT OR WORK IN CLINICAL UNITS/AREAS THAT REQUIRE CARDIAC RHYTHM ANALYSIS. OTHER CLINICAL NURSES INTERESTED IN GAINING RHYTHM ANALYSIS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AS PART OF THEIR CAREER PLANNING CAN APPLY FOR AVAILABLE OPEN SPOTS.

This is a pre-requisite for the WCCNEP.

Fall Protection For Working At Heights THIS TRAINING IS TARGETED FOR STAFF WHO MAY PERFORM WORK ON ELEVATIONS OF 3 METRES OR MORE AND WHILE WORKING ON LADDERS The Fall Protection refresher training sessions will provide Construction, Repair and maintenance workers or Housekeeping employees with information that will enable them to use procedures and fall protection equipment safely, when performing work on elevations of 3 metres or more and while working on ladders. We will review categories of falls, SBH fall protection requirements, control measures and safe practices for common fall hazards associated with ladders, platforms, swing stages and roof work. We will also provide “Hands On” training on how to put on a Full Body Harness and provide information on inspection & storage of fall protection equipment. Aggression and Violence in Healthcare ALL STAFF ARE INVITED TO ATTEND The number of verbal and physically aggressive and abusive acts against health care providers has been steadily increasing in recent years. A Code White is initiated when the behavior of an individual is deemed to be a threat to the physical and psychological well-being of staff, other patients, visitors or the individual themselves. The goal of Code White training is to prepare staff to safely use non-violent intervention strategies to defuse an aggressive situation in which there is an actual or potential danger of harm. This workshop will assist you to develop a coordinated team approach to deal with potentially aggressive and abusive situations during a Code White. There will be an opportunity to participate in hands-on-practice of safety techniques and physical restraint. FOR ALL STAFF WHO HANDLE (RECEIVE), OFFER FOR TRANSPORT (CONSIGN), OR TRANSPORT (CARRY) DANGEROUS GOODS BY GROUND This 4 hour training session is Part 1 of a 2 Part training requirement. Part 2 (Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air) will be provided at a different date. Please check the Calendar for Part 2. Part 1 (TDG): will provide information surrounding legislated requirements for ground transportation of dangerous goods. In this part we will cover 5 Modules as follows:

Module 1: Introduction to TDG Module 2: Classification of Dangerous Goods Module 3: Documentation Module 4: Safety Marks Module 5: Emergency Response Assistance Plans (ERAP)

Charge Nurse Workshop: Developing Your Leadership Skills NURSES WHO ARE NEW TO THE CHARGE NURSE ROLE OR THOSE WHO WILL BE ASSIGNED TO BE IN CHARGE SOON This interactive one-day workshop will assist you to be more confident when you are assigned the role of charge nurse. You will explore your own leadership style and will be introduced to some of the tools and concepts to make you a more effective leader. Other topics include communication and conflict management strategies, practical supervisory resources and a discussion of some of the ethical and complicated issues that you may encounter when you are in charge. Job Hazard Analysis: Implementation And Sustainability Of A Complete Program These sessions are for Managers, Supervisors or designates that are responsible to implement and sustain the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) Program. We will guide you through the completion of the Job Hazard Analysis forms and a risk assessment based on frequency, probability, and severity. We will be defining corrective measures including Engineering Controls, Administration Controls, Personal Protective Equipment and Safe Work Procedures. We will explain how this is put together as a training package for new staff orientations, as well as refresher training of existing staff in your department. Learning Series RELAXING THE BODY, AWAKENING THE HEART Dillon Cherrett In these movement based classes, attention will be paid to release muscle tension employing a specialized ball rolling technique. This practice has significant therapeutic benefit, releasing physical pain and discomfort, greatly improving flexibility, while developing strategies that can be practiced at home. These classes are ideal for health and social service practitioners with soreness and stiffness in their neck and shoulders, hamstrings, lower back, upper back, hips, hip flexors and feet. French Language Training

ALL STAFF WHO MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND

Learn to speak French for work. French Language Training tailored for your work environment is available to permanent SBH staff who have regular direct contact with patients, residents, clients and/or the general public. Not only will you learn day-to-day vocabulary, verbs, pronunciation, reading and writing but you will do so with a Health component to help you in your daily work tasks and situations. This is also a great networking opportunity for you and your colleagues. Classes are 3 hours each and are offered once a week over an 11-week period. Sessions are offered three times a year:

• Fall session – September to December • Winter session – January to March • Spring session – April to June

Registration Form How to Register Registration for all classes is done on the Manitoba eHealth Learning Management System (LMS) unless otherwise specified. You can access the LMS at https://manitoba-ehealth.learnflex.net/include/login.asp You will receive a confirmation email informing you that you have successfully registered.

Cancelling your Registration Cancellation for all classes registered in the LMS must be cancelled by the user on the LMS. Find the course you want to cancel on your LMS “Learning Plan” and selecting the “cancel” button. You will get a confirmation email informing you that you have cancelled.

Cancellation of the Class by Education Services Education Services reserves the right to cancel a program due to insufficient registration or if the facilitator cannot fulfill his/her commitment. We realize that this can be inconvenient for registrants and we will make every effort to provide as much advance notice as possible.

If you register for a course in the LMS that is restricted to employees from a specific program to which you do not belong, registration will be monitored by the course administrator and your registration may be cancelled.
