Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words) With the previous twelve units I have learnt how to work on many skills that would help me

complete my final major project. An example would be simply to watch thousands of music video whether it’s hip hop, electro, techno, R&B, musicals and so forth the reason for watching all these music videos is so I can learn how to work on short or extended shots that will be suitable for the right song and the right vibe for the music video of my final major project. This also can help create an extensive imagination by providing the right tone and mood for the song that I am working on and by creating the right tone and mood I will research how to make the shot for the right sequence in a scene the match the right notes, By shooting in different angles and experimenting with cameras and in editing by using different kinds of sounds and colours. Another skill I have also learned is skill full editing techniques. I luckily confident enough to edit my own video as I have edited a couple of times in the past as this time I can edit faster and even better. Another that I will fully work enough more so this time round is sound I will make sure I capture the sound for the music video as it will require a certain amount of ambient sound even if it a video without dialogue. As my Final Major Project has no dialogue, I can now make sure my video will tell an effective and experimental story throughout by using good camera techniques and editing. All these new skills I have learnt will help me plan a strong music video and will make sure will be absolutely relevant to my target audience. My project is aimed at those who like experimental independent rock music.

My Own effigy will be an independent Art house rock song music video. The Purpose of my video is to create an audience for the music artist I am working with. I will make this music video solo but I have people to help me when needed including Actors. My music video will create a wider audience for people who love independent art house music video and those who love rock n roll. I will show how Art house rock songs can appeal to a more contemporary audience. I will show how Independent rock music is diverse but can be appealing to anyone. The song itself is called my Own Effigy. Therefore the song is about how people struggle with their own primal urges and instincts including. The song is about a man on his way to a graveyard to dead ex-girlfriend whilst arriving at the tombstone he takes out a picture of his dead girlfriend and then crushes it up and throws it at the tombstone and walks feeling free. It is a gritty song with a dark meaning about the incapability to control primal urges. Firstly the main protagonist in which I will film is my roommate from where I live who has agreed to part of the music video. I will be shooting this during the weekend he is open to any kind of guidance I will be giving him to suit the mood and tone of the song and especially the lyrics. Our first location will be shot in the streets near Canterbury Christ church and the final location of shooting will be at a graveyard right next door to Canterbury Christ church. I will be shooting with a Steadicam as it requires many walking scenes so can follow the main character behind him and in front of to catch expressions in order to represent what is he thinking so that the audience is unclear of what is going on his mind that be sinister since the song is about a person’s effigy. This is my own individual art house Final major project and I will be shooting with a tripod, Steadicam, Canon 700d and a microphone to catch the sounds of the environments in which I have booked in advance for filming.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)

For my Evaluation I will be using a Learner progress tracking book. My Tutors will be giving me input on this. This will help as I can keep up with all my work giving me an extra push and doing well as time goes by. This will help give me an extra push and work well with time. Before the project is over I will have a viewing with my artist and writer of the song to review the video and if necessary work on further improvements.

Introduction

This Project portfolio is a report of my Final Major Project (FMP) for my second year UAL Extended Diploma in Media Production. The Project is a contemporary Independent rock and roll art house music video, I will be working with actor, friend and roommate Aidan Walsh. The song of the project is called My Own Effigy, my idea is to create an experimental video about a lost camera searching for someone to follow until he follows a man on his way to a graveyard to a woman he used to know, once arrived at the location he reaches a photo from pocket and throws it away to the gravestone of the woman he once knew. By that point entire music video is in black and white however when the character played by Aidan throws the paper away, he finds some kind of peace which is when the black and white transforms into colour. Aidan walks away and the song and video ends. The first chapter of the project portfolio presents the mood and atmosphere as well as the background and the origins of the idea of my project starting with writing about myself, what I learned on my course and who or what inspired me for my project. This is followed

by explaining what my project is about and why it is important. The chapter concludes with my research plan.

Music interests me because I believe it is one of the main purposes to inspire an idea for something creative whether it’s a book, a film, a video game or indeed a music video. In my personal perspective I believe the sound of the songs played are far stronger than what the lyrics say about the song. I believe that a lot of the time that silence is more impactful than words. Music makes you feel different emotions and can motivate and move you that can drive to great inspiration and influence for a sequence and that is strong and powerful. The topic of music is an art form that is entirely more accessible than others including movies. Music has also so many different types of genres, artists, moods, atmospheres and meanings, it interests me that music that you can make you want and have your own interpretation out of music. Therefore, I have decided to use music within my FMP, as I am looking forward to the different areas and pathways it can help lead to. Work experience will be a strong useful tool within this video, I will have to use email skills to talk to the artist and other roles within the production.

Another main purpose of the research I am working on is to find out different factors and opinions that I will need to work on throughout this project, as well knowing my client’s need for mood, atmosphere, style as well as giving an entirely unique style of my own whilst finding out the answer to my question ‘what makes a good music video? By finding out I will be researching analysing and even interpreting existing music videos as well as awards to songs that deserve and even most certainly don’t deserve. This is a vital tool within my project as it enables me to use similar techniques to achieve an amazing music video. This will be immensely useful from when I begin to capture new creative ideas in which I can film. This way I will have a solid concept of what I would like my final piece to look like and how to achieve the techniques used to create a fabulous music video.

The Background of my Project

I have already made a small number of short films inside the department I study in as well as taken part in some acting courses and acting several theatre plays, this is a personal experience and has influenced my choice of ideas. I have always liked making this and expressing outspoken topics. I love being controversial and divisive because I want people to remember something for the rest of their lives whether they really love it or really hate it. I tend to watch lots of movies I always love art house films especially the ones that go against conventional pleasing especially music videos. I also believe that style and substance are indeed strong but if I had to choose within

style or substance than I would go for Style and what I have learnt is that many people don’t understand this but later they do so I would to make something ahead of it’s time. This is something I have severely learnt during my course work and I think it is important to not be like anybody else and something nobody has ever seen before. Therefore, I think making an experimental art house rock song will be something not for everybody’s taste but aimed at an audience who love the genre and I think making the song that has a slow burn story with an actor walking to a memory he once had will be effective to create as the actor and the camera and style and mood can create the perfect emotion for the song as well as showing the storyline.

The basic premise of my project is to create an experimental art house rock and roll music video. My idea is for my video to fascinating while being immersive, trippy and experimental as possible throughout the song. Experimental is well known for the genre of the song of rock, therefore I want the main subject of my video to be emotion based. An influence for the song isn’t exactly a rock song but dance songs like Leftfield, Afrika Shox, Indochine College boy, Coldplay paradise as strong source of inspiration, I hope to create something alike to this. ‘’My Own effigy’’ is about people primal urges however is this context, we are going to portray the storyline as losing a loved one in a relationship/break up. I will be also be shooting on location to capture frame shot as well as extended shots of nature as this will be source of inspiration from the films of Terrence Malick and Lazlo Némés throughout the video to emphasise the storyline.

Who am I?

We recently took a personality test, my result was ‘’a debater’’ I was satisfied with my results as I feel like the information provided explained my personality very well and I wasn’t surprised at how the debater personality described me. The majority of the careers I researched and want to go into divisive controversial skills by using art and film as a form of tool to provide those factors as well as being an observant character and outspoken personality, which are some characteristics that I have.

I often find myself in thought, dreaming of creative ideas of how to make certain sequences in movies to impress other people so they can understand on what I am trying to say and achieve. My

fear is being close to death, to confront other people when necessary and social abilities in certain aspects.

I am at my happiest when I am working or doing things alone or the way I would like them to be done but most of all just simply watching movies and making things and have other people react to them and being in conversations that interest me that enables my true personality to shine through. My natural ability to interact with people makes me often uncomfortable due to people’s own interest that doesn’t interest me of the way they are in general as I like to involved in subject matters that people don’t understand or don’t have any interest. I am only confident when I am interested in something and often leave a ground breaking impression on everyone I meet whether it’s good or bad. I consider myself incredibly loyal and trustworthy either due to my vulnerability and understanding people’s own emotion and I love making impacts on other people that they have never seen before and I am only a good listener if I am interested in what I am hearing if not I am terrible at it. My horoscope is Leo, which I would say represents me very well. I have an ego and love being in center stage as well as being creative have strong idealism and leadership without any little ambition while fun in the same time. And I get angry over things that have not enough authenticity in the background, I despise narrow mindedness of people and ignorance those sort of emotions make fiery, ruthless, sneaky and vengeful.

I am incredibly open minded and see the best and worst in people, for my perspective that is a good thing as it will help me who to be and who to not hang out with. Because of this though however I can sometimes have my generosity, my kindness and loyalty taken for granted, one of my weaknesses would be not being able to say no and due to fear of confrontation I consider myself too nice.

What did I learn on my course?

For the past 3 years, the media production course has given me many new skills and knowledge of people and more that I didn’t have before. I did media as a GSCE and knew that the media industry was something that I wanted to be a part of. I always wanted to be a filmmaker ever since I was 6 years old living in France. I enjoyed watching movies my entire life and have been strongly influence and gain a huge impact on my life that I can’t see myself working on any other subject except for cinema. It fascinated me how powerful the media is and how quickly news is shared so quickly whether it’s positive or negative. I believe that visually I have learnt about different types of camera shots as well as having fun with them. Audio work was something that I struggled with for 2 years, I found it difficult to make capture the right sound for the right scene especially in the editing room as well as making my voice sound exciting without showing it visually, now I feel confident and self-aware of the limitless possibilities that I want to show in the future especially with audio in which I hope I will learn how to control even more so in the future. Brighton film school that I now volunteer at, is something I would never have done if it wasn’t for this course. This course has also given me guidance with the work place industry I have learnt how to make a CV visually striking and interesting, as well as having the opportunity to work with different groups of people, and their own perspective in how to make a shot seem right for the source material given for us to work. And now I’m working with artists and songwriters that I have privilege to be a part of. Canterbury College has given me the opportunity to gain a more wise new experiences while I will hope full head to Brighton film school. Teamwork is something I have also learnt within this course, during a short film that I made called the Woman in Purple which took 2 weeks to shoot I had an amazing experience in making a film that can be exhausting and fulfilling while I had strong supportive team of friends on my side. Throughout the 3 years my confidence has grown in front of the camera and behind due to skills I have learnt from Canterbury College. Therefore, my Transformation project last January which was entitled The Woman in purple. This entailed me to create artistic freedom by writing a script as well as editing and finding actors as well as the struggles of shooting on location as truly understanding the genre I was making which was Film Noir. When I first joined the college I had a naïve optimism , now I hope I will be leaving a mature and wise realist and idealist. Though out the people I met and working in the media department that I made a film out of it that became incredibly controversial and have no regret making it as I think I have taught a good lesson among my fellow classmates as well as leaving a ground breaking landmark in the media department.

I have acquired many skills throughout the past 12 units, such as, camera work, audio work and editing. Multi camera production (video below) will be a main skill I will be using throughout filming as I want the actor to simply walk to the graveyard looking cool as much the mood of the song says so with the camera shots and angles. Learning about this was very useful as I now have more knowledge of the best way to shoot my video. Video editing is also a vital skill in my FMP, this gives me the opportunity and freedom to edit the saturation and the transitions giving the video more of a fascinating approach to filmmaking. Lastly, creating a 20 minute short film has allowed me to work under the pressure of getting the storyline across quickly, this will be valuable in my FMP because I want my video to have a continuous storyline. These skills will be used within my final major project.

What is my project about?

My topic of study is independent rock art house music. The question I wanted to find out

was, what makes an immersive experimental yet intruiging music video? I have chosen to

research this topic as I have always had an interest in music and the way that I created,

however I wanted to learn more about a genre. That it is created, however I wanted to

learn more about the world of independent rock even though I have vaguely interested in

the world and the subculture of punk rock and roll in the past. Yet I like to learn more

about.

The Independent music awards are popular amongst celebrities in the world of rock

within the music industry. I’m interested in why these videos that win awards and how

they are created, what makes so unique and so different? What camera skills and

techniques did they use to shoot the video? What was the meaning of the themes it was

trying to explore within the video? Why was it successful for the fans of that genre?

Researching and analysing existing music videos as well as awards for the independent

music industry within are incredibly important within my project as it enables me to use

similar techniques to achieve a groundbreaking music video.

From what I have found, I hope to create an art house independent rock and roll music

video which is rated an incredible music video. The video will be immersive and engaging

and emotional video, Rock is well known for the world of independence therefore I want

the main subject of my video to be about loss love done in an art for. Billy idol, John

Lennon, Nick Cave, Indochine, Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols are a great source of

inspiration. I hope to make something similar to their music videos including those of

Bjork. ‘’My Own Effigy’’ means people’s primal urges to cause trouble, however in this

context, I will portray the storyline as a memory the character once had as he is on his

way to his location as it unfolds slowly as it begins as a mini mystery . I will be filming at

natural and urban locations that will communicate different styles while fitting the tone

and mood of the music. I will be taking shots of locations and landscapes as this is a grand

source of inspiration from the like of Lazlo Némés and Terrence Malick.

Why my project is important?

My Project is important because the audience can connect with music video even if it may not be as accessible for some it’s for art house fans and those who love long rock songs. Music videos and films in general is something I am deeply passionate about. I love watching music video especially how they are made and how creative they can be. Watching or listening to a song is strong emotional source of inspiration as it helps me think of a movie sequence of motivational things when I am jogging. I think it is vital to feel that way when you watch and listen a music video or song. Also, music video are widely accessible to watch through social media especially Youtube. Most of today’s generation watch music videos every single day while either working or just for enjoyment without even knowing what is it that attracts them to it. Why do they like it? What makes them feel relaxed and at ease by watching them what is it that draws their attention? This particular aspect interests me and I am looking forward to the responses I will receive. I am also using this project as an opportunity to connect all the skills I have learnt throughout the past 3 years in the media production course, such as, audio visuals, style, lighting, camera work, shooting on location, pre-production and editing. This will be incredibly useful to me as from this point I can evaluate my progress over the course of these years as well as using all the skills I have been taught at the same time.

My main source of research will be to find out to make music videos and by doing so I will be researching many music video made by great directors like, Martin Scorsese, Spike lee, Alan Parker, Michael Bay, spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Xavier Dolan and much much more.

I will be reading books about making music videos and how catch ideas for songs that fit the right mood and tone and finding from other movies and even video games how to make a scene look as distinctive as possible to fit the music video that I will be making.

I think it is important to include many different kinds of genres in the topic of media not just

music videos because in order to gain a strong creative imagination to proceed in making the video I will be watching many films in different languages like foreign films. I will be researching concept art work and storyboards to figure how to connect one idea to the next. I also want to make my music video stylish so I will be researching fashion magazines. Those that will be included shall be Elle, Vogue, Dazed , and Vogue Paris. My music video will be shot in colour but edited in black and white so I will be watching black and white music videos that would be 7 Seconds by Neneh cherry, Indochine College boy, The chemical Brothers galvanize. The opening sequence of the music video will be inspired from the opening sequence of a foreign film called Son of Saul.

I believe the research I incredibly important for the subject matter because I will gain a full knowledge and clear understanding on how to make the music video that I want to provide.

I believe that mood is stronger than the lyrics itself so I really think it is important to make the music video that will have a strong stylistic approach to the song. What I have learnt from watching and reading all the material for the subject matter that I will work on I have learnt how these incredible filmmakers have experimented with cameras and coming up with grandiose ideas. So I will be taking a strong sense of freedom while committed to the source material as well and I believe those 2 things are incredibly important to do work as well with the knowledge I will gain form the research that I have worked on.

The design of the research I will be making will require specific independent art house songs no matter what the genre is.

The subject I will be researching is the gritty nightlife style of individuals and the excess they take before they have lost total control on authority. I will be researching what makes a man or a woman who may have lose or something that has happened to them that will make them trigger into breaking point. And most of I will be researching vulnerable people and a great example of that will be the life and death of river Phoenix.

The target Audience that I want to appeal is an Art house audience who like black and White films that are incredibly stylish and who like Style over Substance and an Audience who like watching independent films and for an Audience who like rock and Roll music. Because the

music video I will be making Is inspired by the movies of John Cassavetes, Jean Luc Godard, Antonio Campos, and especially the films of Terrence Malick. And so this will be also aimed at an Audience who like those movies I have just cited.

The Skills and Techniques I will be using for the music video shall be using a canon 700d while shooting extensive shots with a tripod and shooting with long takes with a Steadicam while using a total use of freedom. It will be shot in colour and edited in black and white but the last shots will be colour because the main character has finally found psychological resolution meaning the scenes in black and white will be meaning that the character isn’t fulfilled until the end when he has. This is a massive source of inspiration from Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire. And that a skill that I will be using.

The Production research I have been working on is to research 3 music videos the first one being Leftfield Afrika shox, Alizee Moi Lolita, and Coldplay Paradise. I have been researching how they were made so I have been also drawing storyboards and finding the right locations to shoot. All this will help me shoot the project the way I have visualised it.

It also has some significance to humpty dumpty with a blind character who is incredibly fragile as he is made out of terracotta and can break into little pieces very quickly. Chris Cunningham is a British Music video film maker who had started off working as a technician in the 1995 film Judge Dredd. He then was hired by filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to design the central character of the film A.I. Artificial Intelligence until it was directed by Steven Spielberg.

The history background Political context of Afrika Shox

Afrika Shox political aspect of the video is that it resembles themes of African slavery in the sense that the protagonist in the video is a broken and blind looking hobo , he is incredibly skinny to the point he resembles a Jew who has only just survived the holocaust.

The electronic music matching the atmosphere is also inspired by some of the novels written by William Gibson. The other political context of the video is that since it is set in an expensive side of a big city where multiple corporations reign supreme and are also non attentive to poor individuals including coloured people. An Example of this would be that in one scene a character bumps into a more smart looking person and accidentally breaks his arm into many pieces since the main character is made out of terracotta.

The video was made in 1999 and in the lyrics of the song, it is said that the past has got to stop and the future has got to rock. And that it is a song representing the end of a century and the begging of the 21st century, in other words the song it is a glamorising commercial theme for the begging of the year 2000, As it said already in the lyrics. In that era of 1999, The Matrix has just came out and it was a decade of roaring swinging growth of punk rock and a massive leap towards creativity. Dance music was turning into Electronic techno music Hip hop was at it's golden age Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and James Cameron were the kings of cinema, Friends was on every Thursday nights, there was no IPhones, Facebook and the immense amount of Internet that was being used , Everything was neon in fashion and in design as a new style and it was the

beginning of the digital era. All these cult factors represented a decade that was relevant into it's culture of that time and thus the song Afrika Shox is an electronic piece that is also a semi representation of that era.

Analysis

The Clip was one of the first music videos to be put on DVD quality. It was shot in New York City and features actors like Caspert Hunte who plays the protagonist, London Reyes as a Break Dancer, Mitchell Mertinez as another break dancer, Raymond Ramoz as another break dancer and Afrika Bambaataa ( the singer of the song) who plays a car parking attendant.

Camera Movement

The Camera movements and visual look of the video is portrayed with a dramatic sinister tone yet the tone of the video has a Sci-Fi quirky tone to the source material. The colours used for this video are mostly dark green and grey whilst balancing between blurry and POV on it's central character to create this dreamlike feel. Also since it is shot primarily on the protagonist's point of view the camera is mainly focused on what is going on through his mind. So there some shaky shots that is done of purpose because the central character is going through a very confusing moment in his short life. And every body around are like alien to him. It is highly similar to a film made by Jonathan Glazer called Under the Skin. In which an Alien is walks amongst planet earth and has immense difficulty connecting with humans, it's like an E.T. for the mature audiences.

2. Coldplay Paradise

This video was directed by Shynola and was made in 2011 staring Chris Martin as a dressed up Elephant searching for his crew mates aka Coldplay dressed in other Elephants. The video was filmed on Location in London, Cape town in the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape and Johannesburg . The video is a semi quirky comedy piece with similarities to cartoon episodes in the reign of the Looney tunes like the road runner and SpongeBob.

Analysis

This video has a large budget, it was shot on multiple locations and some of the shots in the video are quite cinematic. There are shots of Aeroplanes and island during an instrumental of the song. The mood that the atmosphere give changes to a more positive feeling. When the elephant is in the tube station with the flash cards asking for money he's just standing with the lyrics in his hands, however when he is in the new location, he's asking for money by dancing and putting on a show for the people showing how much happier it is. The music builds up as the elephant is reunited with the rest of the elephants which the audience can assume that are the rest of the Coldplay band. Showing the Elephant running in slow motion emphasises that he's in paradise and achieved what he set out to do. When the chorus plays again, the audience can see how the elephant has fit into the rest of the elephants and how happy he is compared to how he was at the beginning of the video.

3. Alizée Moi Lolita

This video was made in France as it is completely French it was written by French pop star Mylene farmer and the music was composed by Laurent Boutonnat. In which both produced the clip. The video gained wide recognition. The inspiration of Moi Lolita was inspired by Vladmir Nakobov's novel Lolita. Alizée was meant to represent this seductive Lolita character in order to make ( primarily male) audiences charmed. The video was made in 2000 and was a major hit in Europe and made a star out of Alizée.

Analysis

The concept was to mix adult hood, childhood innocence and possibly the lost of Innocence. In order to this the atmosphere of the clip had to be as authentic as possible adding natural beauty with colourful flour while giving an exotic vibe to the source material. With one of the quotes of the song My name is Lolita that is the start of the monologue That revolves around egocentrism, as well as the affirmation of the novel itself. Ergo a teen who amuses you with the sole purpose of entertaining herself, she toys with the idea of having an actual sexual relationship but it stays as just an idea.

It has inspiration to other sons like Vanessa Paradis, Mylene Famer, Britney Spears, Blondie and Madonna.

But if there was a song that stood out to me till this day when i was around 4 was a song called high by Lighthouse family. I would listen to the themes of Harry Potter, Spider man and others. Rock and all the great artists of that time which were in the late 90's early 2000's i wasn't really aware of and did't catch my interest until much later on.

Music is one of the main influences in my life and for this reason my research topic will be research around music.

Research report.

Intro

Throughout the 4th term I had to conduct research in order to start creating my own music video for a song provided to me by a an independent band because I am passionate about music in films, I believe it is a grand source of inspiration and I enjoy filming so I felt it would be a good path to take. I investigated through primary, secondary, qualitative and quantitative methods to ensure the research stayed interesting and varied. By using reliable sources I looked into different topics such as ‘How do music videos change their style according to their genre?’ and ‘How has one artists music videos changed with their music over the years?’. To start with I simply watched dozens of music videos from famous filmmakers like Jonathan Glazer, Alan Parker and most recently Xavier Dolan I created a research plan to draw out everything I planned to study which was very helpful for organising myself. Also, I examined what research techniques would work well along with delving into their advantages and disadvantages. From my findings, I have gathered what makes a good music video and can justify how.

Methodologies

To start with, I did some secondary research by watching music videos of one artist and explored how they had developed over their career. The Artist in whom I have researched with is Michel Gondry. I felt that this topic was relevant to my work because I could learn what the artist had changed and made their videos more modern along the way, giving me ideas for my own video. As well as that, I delved into analysing different styles of music videos as secondary research. I watched an array of genres and compared their styles which gave me an insight to what codes and conventions would go with my song’s video to help me create my own.

Whilst doing secondary research I went onto the YouGov Lite to take what I had learnt further. I used this internet tool to find out some information on who listens to folk music because the song I am making a video for is of the folk genre meaning I could have some knowledge on my audience before beginning the next stage of production. Despite my findings being relevant to finding my target audience, I am unaware of how trustworthy the source was and therefore would be wary of continuing to use that information to help me with the rest of my project.

From doing secondary research, I answered some of my questions enabling me to carry on with my project. I discovered that music videos tend to differentiate depending on the genre of music therefore now know what works well with what kind of music and have broadened my knowledge of the styles as I watched a lot on YouTube. Additionally, I studied how Ed Sheeran’s music videos have changed over the last 7 years and can now take his influence onto my own. Overall, this research was helpful since it has widened my awareness of music videos of all genres and can take what I like and think works well for my own ideas. However, my secondary research is somewhat weak due to the fact that there is not a variety of sources from where I got my information. If I had read music magazines or books as well then I could have had even more data to work with and have a better understanding of what would make a good music video so to overcome this I will be continuing my research into my pre-production work and will be using more resources.

Moving on, I began my primary research with a range of methods. Firstly, I designed a survey on Survey Monkey and sent it to around 20 people in order to receive a variety of answers allowing me to get information leading me to find out what makes a good music video. For example, I asked ‘what is your favourite thing about music videos?’ so that I could examine what the most popular answers were and take that into account when I start planning my own. Also, I asked ‘what is something you dislike about music videos?’ with the most popular answer being ‘when they are too long’ which taught me what I should be avoiding when creating my video. This method of qualitative research has been useful to me as I know that the sources are credible and I have an insight as to what the audience of music videos like and dislike about them.

Evaluation:

While working on Unit 12, week 2 while researching music videos to understand the craft I found myself interested in discovering how music video directors make music videos and how some them are current A grade filmmakers. Making a music video is almost exactly like making a feature film. Because is a from of making a story out of the sound of the song is telling us and arguably even more so than the lyrics it tells us.

Research Findings

My question for my final major project was ’’what makes a really good music video? ‘’ After completing my research, I have discovered the answer to my question, from the surveys as well as the opinions from myself and my fellow classmates. Researching 3 different music videos as well as researching the works of incredible filmmakers on how they make movies and how they make music videos. All this has really contributed towards the answer for my question.

Creating a questionnaire was useful as it allowed me to receive not only other people’s opinion but an understanding of myself that I never really thought of as to what makes an immersive music video as well as finding out what the audience would like to see featured within my Final major project video and show the audience something they didn’t expect to see before.

So by researching 3 different music videos was fullfilling and arguably vital as it allowed me to analyse with a strong benefit the styles the moods, the shots, the storylines and the creative input. As well as watching how different artists interpret the genre independently.

My Project

Introduction I have gained many acquired skills throughout the past 12 units, such as, camera work, audio work and editing. Multi camera production will be a main skill I will use throughout filming as I would want the actor to give a cool walk as is on his way to the location within the camera shot and angles to create the right mood piece. Learning about all this incredibly useful as I now have more knowledge of the best way to shoot my video. Video editing is also an incredible important skill in my FMP, this gives me the opportunity to edit the saturation and the transitions giving the video more of a personality. Lastly, creating a 15 minute short film was useful as it allowed me to work under the pressure of getting the storyline across quickly, this will be valuable in my FMP because I want my video to have a continuous experimental storyline. These skills will be used within my final major project.

I am indeed creating an independent art house rock and roll music video. Jon’s audience is of a mature age who have a love in specific movie genres like horror, crime thrillers, therefore my aim from this video is to widen his audience to the younger generation as the content of his vision is for a mature age, as independent rock music isn’t a popular genre within my age group. My idea is to create an engaging and immersive video, Independent is well known for the genre of rock and roll, therefore I want the main subject of my video to be rock based. this. ‘’My Own Effigy’’ is about primal urges within peoples minds, however in the context, I will be going to portray the storyline as losing a loved one and how to overcome anger and frustration. Filming at beautiful calming scenery while being out of focus and then the story will slowly transform into focus from each scenery I will shoot as this is source of inspiration of not only music videos but movies in general as this is a grand help to emphasise the style of the song. Researching and analysing existing music videos as well as independent awards is important for me to understand whilst making the project as it enables me to use similar techniques to achieve an unusual yet wonderful music video. My role throughout the project will to be email the artist as a form of communication, film the music video then edit the final source material. Project Evaluation

For my project I have created an independent music video to artist Jon Smith song ‘’My Own Effigy’’. The aim of my project was to find out what makes an art house music video as well as introducing the younger generation into independent art house music. I chose to create a music video as it is something that I have never done before, I watch thousands music videos daily but never see the work that goes into them, therefore I thought this would be a great opportunity to learn more about this area of media.

The few strengths that feature within my final major project were the editing skills, camera angles and shots, the takes, the acting, the research and the locations used to film. Changing the colour in the editing room from black and white to colour really helped set the style and mood and atmosphere at was I was aiming for, it really helped me give the video more of a smooth atmospheric feeling and allowed the audience to relate to the psychological complexity the protagonist is going through in the video. Using a range of long camera shots and angles helped tell the story and gave an insight as to what the independent rock genre is about. The locations used helped set the scene and worked well with the music giving it more emotion. Overall the research and pre-production was also a strong strength as it had allowed me to get a solid idea of what makes an experimental music video as well as finding out the point of view of other fellow classmates as well as friends, tutors and family before filming and editing.

In the weakness aspect of my project were that I struggles gaining inspiration for the project as I honestly had very little interest in the song I was working on however I am incredibly proud that I have got it done and that I had people to help me make it as time begging to run out fast, so I had a very little amount of time to film before I reach a deadline. In addition to this I could have cutted out more of my long shot footage as i should have inserted more different shot to keep the pacing at the right speed. And originally I had a far more bigger concept for the song but it didn’t turn out by the book due to timing and featured more actors who just weren’t available. So I was very happy that I found one person to say yes to the project I was working on because he was also busy in his own time so we had a limited amount of time to film the project.

The theme for my project was all about releasing anxiety and pressure, relating to the song ‘’My Own Effigy’’. Going through an angry sinister torment until it is finally cured rather than breakdown point while reminiscing a memory the character once had. Hence which is why I experimented using long takes as an artistic tool to slowly figure out what the character is about and his coolness.

The rock band the cure and Depeche mode were also a grand source of inspiration and there use of colour is similar to my project, both mine and there videos had a profound impact on my project as well as other independent movies from independent filmmakers. Hence the relation to use an actor as the focus of our video as well as using the Steadicam.

After reviewing my proposal and comparing it to my final piece, nothing has changed. I have continued to carry out what I wanted the end of my project to look like.

Receiving feedback from my tutors and peers has been useful as it allowed me to see areas in which I can improve on as well as seeing the positives and strengths. Comments were made on the use of black and white and how it transforms into colour, how it helped set the scene and carry the storyline much more real and pure.

To improve and develop my work I would film in additional sequences at the same locations just to shorten certain long shots to make the video more exciting as well as having multiple actors to perhaps tell each side of the story (a woman character in the male’s memory as a flashback) as this would had made it more interesting and intruiging.

I am just pleased that got the project done and sorted, I was cautious of filming and editing the video as it was something that I have done before but never a music video so I am pleased that gained the experience of making one. All the music videos I had previously watched were of a professional standard and I was very aware and, cautious and confident how to make my creative source for the music to work on. However, from the feedback that I had received it has made me feel more relieved that it didn’t out as worst as I thought it might would for my video.

Overall in my opinion I believe that I have produced a music video to a professional artistic standard as well as learning about wat makes a good music video, this was target of mine throughout this project. My camera work has improved considerably when filming the video, I have used a range of camera movement as well as using different angles, and this is a technique that I wanted to carry out as I mentioned this in my proposal. Editing has always been one of my strengths however, from editing tis video my skills and knowledge of using Adobe Premiere Pro have grown. Using email with the artist and social chemistry with the actor throughout my project was also effective as it given me more working experience and has given me a great opportunity to work with a client and his needs.

This project has assisted me in looking deeper when watching music videos, finding out about the body of them and the work behind the scenes, from my research it has allowed me to learn more about the concepts and ideas behind a video as well as appreciating them more. It has made me more confident into making one and enjoying the creative freedom whilst making a one.
