    Introduction

On the 21stof November 2014, a construction site visit was organized by Sr. Ang Fuey Lin in

Bandar Sunway, PJS 7, Selangor. The site was located right in the opposite direction of Taylors

Lakeside University, right beside DK Senza. The project description is as stated below:

Project 2 Blocks of 27-Storey SoHo and a 28 Storey Serviced Apartment

Developer DK - My Properties Sdn. Bhd.

Architect RDA - Harris Architects Sdn. Bhd.

    Quantity Sr. Alpha-Omega Matrix

    Contractor Pasukhas Construction Sdn. Bhd.

The site visit is joined by approximately 45 students that were divided into two different groups

along five lecturers. The site visit started off with the first group at 9.00am sharp. We were guided

by a construction site safety officer, Encik Kamarul and his team members. We are only granted

access to the basement ground floor and first floor as the whole site was still under heavy

construction. The first session ended at 10.00am and continued with the second group.

    Objectives

To exposes oneself to an actual working environment on site.

To identify and observe the usage of materials and machineries at a construction site.

To understand the importance of personal safety in construction site.

To understand and observe the construction process techniques and applications.

To identify the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

To strengthen communication skills and to see the importance of teamwork in the building

    team.

To analyse the use formworks, scaffoldings and concretes used in site.

    Technical Observation

We arrived at the construction site at 9.00 a.m. On the way to the construction area, we

observed what was around the site. According to the information board below, we can know the

contractor of this building is Pasukhas Construction Sdn Bhd and some detailed information of the

    building.

First of all, we were given a briefing on the safety regulations that we needed to abide to by

Mr Kamarul. As we were informed earlier on, our safety helmets and safety shoes are direly

important. They help protect a person form injuries in a construction site. Safety signs and

precautions are also placed around the site to ensure the safety of the workers.

Throughout the site visit, Mr. Tang talked to us about the building. The name of the building

is Dlatour. It has been designed with sky garden that will allow natural air to flow through the

towers both horizontally and vertically. The project consists of two towers. The first tower is

consists of 629 units with 23 storeys up the Duplex Design Soho and the second tower consisting

of 332 units also with 23 storeys of Service Apartment.

They have completed the car park so far, but for the time being, we were only allowed

access to the lower levels as the rest of the building was still under heavy construction.

Mr. Tang also mentioned that post tensioning is one of the new methods used in forming a

concrete slab. It is basically applying compression after pouring concrete. This simplifies

formwork, reduces conventional reinforcement and saves time in construction cycles. However,

    this method is very expensive.

The concrete slab is reinforced with reinforcement by using the post tensioning method.

    Construction Technology

    Formwork

    Beam formwork

Timber material is used for the beam formwork.

This type of formwork is made out of timberand plywoodor moisture-resistant particleboard.

    Advantages Disadvantages

Very easy to handle Short life span

Low cost Time consuming for large structures

    Slab Formwork

Table orFlying formis used for the slab formwork.

Preassembled formwork and false work unit, frequently forming complete bays of

    suspended floor sections.

Assembled formworks are lifted per elevator or "flown" by crane from one story to the next.

Highly suitable for constructing a flat slab.

Consists of five layers of plywood with a smooth surface in order for it to be used

    repetitively without any damages.

    Advantages Disadvantages

    Faster construction for larger floorlayouts

    Requires skilled workers to install

    Can be reused Expensive

    Provides high quality, non-slip surfacefinish

Requires sufficient space for the tableunit to fly beyond building line

    Column Formwork

The column formwork systems use a modular formwork system which consists of prefabricated

timber, aluminium and steel beams along with formwork modules. This allows quick assembly and

erection on-site and reduces usage of labour. It allows a variety of internal face surfaces

depending on the concrete finish required.

    Advantages Disadvantages

Increase in construction speed Very expensive

Material used allows easier assembly -

    Has good quality finishing -

    Can be reused -

    Independent Scaffolding

Independent scaffoldings can be seen almost everywhere at the construction site. They are used

both inside and outside of the building. As stated, the independent scaffoldings do not require any

building supportand can be placed on almost any surface.

Reasons for using this type of scaffolding :

    Easy to assemble and disassemble.

Able to remain upright without support from the building.

Increase in construction speed and efficiency.

Wider and safer access area for stair ladders and rest platforms.

    Building Materials

    Concrete Used

There are three methods of concrete usage; one of which is site cast concrete where wet concrete

mix is deposited in forms at location where it is to be used later on. Another one is used as

masonry construction called concrete masonry units which are used in a similar manner as stones

or bricks. Finally, precast concrete is where concrete mix is deposited in forms at location from its

desired location. According to the site officer, Concrete grade 40 is used throughout the whole

    building.

    Advantages Disadvantages

Reduce in depth of slab reduces cost Surface is very hard and can easily

    cause injuries

Extended life cycles More expensive than Grade 30

High compressive strength Does not retain heat well

In the application of grades for this construction site, the building is planned out to be a tall

building and will contain two blocks that will hold 28 floors and 27 floors for both blocks

respectively. It is very common for the designer to choose concrete with grade 40 to support the

    building of such height.

    Recommendation

The only more reliable concrete grade besides Grade 40 is Grade 30 concrete. Here are the

advantages and disadvantages of grade 30 concrete.

    Advantages Disadvantages

Cheaper than grade 40 Lower compressive strength

Long life span Resistant to sulphate attacks are lower

Resistant to fire Will easily crack under heavy load

    Conclusion

This may not be my first time visiting a construction site, but I enjoyed myself and also

gained even more new knowledge and experiences from this site visit. I have learnt the

importance of teamwork and leadership in constructing a building. For a project to be successful,

    effective planning is very essential.

Through this site visit, I was able to understand clearer about what had been taught in class,

especially about the laying of reinforcement bars in formworks and other parts of the building

structures, such as beams, columns and floor slabs. More importantly, I have learnt that safety in

a construction site is a must. Safety helmets and boots are required to enter a construction site.

Finally, I am very grateful that our lecturers, Miss. Ang, Miss Azrina and Miss Aishah were

more than willing to spend their precious time in bringing us to this construction site. On a side

note, I would like to thank Mr Tang and Mr Kamarul for giving us a wonderful experience in the

construction site by teaching us the necessary things about building construction.
