THE MONTH OF MAY: in 725 the Anglo-Saxon churchhistorian Bede, reporting on the calendar of hisPagan forbears wtlo had migrated from the Germanic

lands into Britain, said they began their solar yearwi th "the turning of the Sun towards longer days",that is with the longest night, which they called"Mother's night": at the Winter solstice. The Vener-able Bede lists the names of the Germanic months[*1). We find that the month we now know as May wasknown by them as t h r i m i l c h i - - " b e c a u s e cows couldthen be milked three times a day". Another name usedfor May in Saxon England was Sproutkale: the sprout-ing time of virgin-mother Earth with her archaicAryan name of Kale, Kelle, or Kali. The more popular

name for this month, which has come down into modernusage, although without its old calendar meaning, was that it was the month of the Honeymoon.

And rightly so, for May is when sweet desireweds wild delight. The Maiden of Spring and the Lordof the Waxing Year meet in the greening fields andrejoice together under the warm Sun. A spiral web istwined around the shaft of life and all of nature is

renewed. Now is a time of flowering, when we meet todance the dance of life and we celebrate with Ma-poles and bonfires the marriage of Hermes to hlSBride.

This is the month of the two, the couple whodelight in each other's company.

This was the time of May marriages when couplesran off together into the woods to enjoy each other.Young men went out early into the fields and broughtback garlands of may, cowslips and primroses, andplaced these before dawn at their true love's door.

It is also the time when the morning dew issaid to have unusual properties. Gathering the dewin the early hours of May-morning and washing one'sface in it is a centuries-old custom. Queen Cather-ine of Aragon went dew-gathering with twenty-five ofher ladies in 1515. The English diarist, SamuelPepys, recorded in his 1669 diary that his wife andmaid went out at three in the morning to gather May-dew. They returned and were back in bed by six. Thedew was used both for healing and as a beautify ingand luck-bringing agent. It is still valued in partsof Europe.

On May Day the famous Hobby Horse of Pads tow inthe west of England comes out to meet the Summer.Old 'Oss is a very spectacular beast. He wears ahoop-shaped frame, about six feet round, coveredwith black tarpaulin. In front of the hoop is asmall, wooden horse's head with snapper jaws. Hisown head is hidden by a ferocious-looking mask, surmounted by a tall, conical cap. Old 'Oss, accom-panied by singers, dancers and a band, capers and

gambols through the streets chasing the girls. If hecan he'll corner one against a wall and cover herwith his huge tarpaulin skirt. If she is unmarried, this act is supposed to bring her a husband; if shealready is, a baby is to be expected within a year.In the old days the man playing 'Oss would be nakedunder the skirt, and the inside of the cloth wassmeared with blacklead, which left a mark on thegirl as a sign of the good fortune to come.

The last verse of the Pads tow May Song is sung

each time, after he has caught and tumbled a younggirl, that Old 'Oss dies a magical death. He willsink to the ground as if dying and lie there whilehis dirge is sung. When the music reverts to thelivelier music of the earlier verses, the 'Oss leapsup, high in the air, and off he goes again, as fullof life as ever.

Easter was late this year. The Equinox occurredwhen the Moon was in Scorpio, two days followin9 aFull Moon. As Easter falls on the Sunday f o Ll.o w Ln qthe Full Moon after the Equinox, we had to waituntil the Moon had travelled around to 25 Libra forthat Full Moon, then one more week for Easter, bywhich time the Sun had moved on into Taurus.

There are few ceremonies actually at the Equi-nox. The main Christian festival, Easter, and theJewish Passover always occur after it. Followingthese two is the old Saxon festival that welcomes inthe Summer on 1st May.

    Easter is the springtime sacrificial festival--whether of the Saxon goddess Eostre, after whom itis named; or the Greek dawn-goddess Eos weeping dewfor the hero Mennon; or Ishtar weeping for Tammuz;

or Mary for Jesus. Her sacred month was Eosturmon-ath, the Moon of Eostre. Like all the church's"movable feasts", Easter shows its pagan origin in adating system based on the old lunar calendar. Thesymbols associated with this holy festival also takeus back to pre-Christian times. The Easter Bunny isthe Moon-hare that was sacred to the Goddessthroughout the ancient world. Eggs are symbolic ofrebirth (the regularly recurrent period of ovulationin animals is called oestrus), which is why Eastereggs used always to be colored red--the life-colour.Russians used to lay red eggs on graves as resurrec-tion charms. And the cross itself can be relateddirectly to the Equinox--i t is a re~resentation ofthe two solstices and the two equ1noxes, on thecross of which our lives are led.

The Jewish Passover is not unrelated to theSaxon May-Pole ceremonies. The Passover meal iscalled Seder, which name has an interesting resem-blance to the Egyptian Sed, the oldest festival ofOs irian regeneration and fertility. At the Sed,Osiris's masculinity was erected in the form of theDjed column, originally a simple phallic obelisk, and later a representation of Osiris's sacrum, the"sacred bone" so called because it was regarded asthe source of seminal fluid. When Isis brought Osi-ris back to life, her first care was to make him"stand up", which meant restora tion of his phallicspirit. The term Passover itself must refer to theSun passing north over the equinoctial point, irre-spective of the rabbinical meaning given to theword.

A likely source of the later-Saxon May Pole isthe Irminsul, the world pillar worshipped by thecontinental Saxons and destroyed by Charlemagne. Itwas a large wooden pillar set in the open air, rep-resenting the supporting post of the universe. Inthe far North the Irminsul becomes not a pillar, buta leafy tree that rose through all of the worlds, onwhose branches the Sun and Moon nest. It is theworld axis, the astrologer's MC-IC meridian, symbolof divine order.

Whatever the source of the Saxon May Pole, wedo know that it was in regular use until quiterecent times. Although most towns and villages had apermanent May Pole, some 30 or 40 feet high, sit-

uated in their centre, its use was restricted tothe single month of May.

The month May is named after the Grandmother ofMagic, Maia, mother of the Enlightened One, Hermes. The ancient representation of Herm reminds us of the

Osirian Djed column. Invariably this was an oblongstone surmounted with the head of the god and other-wise unadorned save for his reproductive organ pro-jecting from the centre of the column.

The flowering hawthorn takes its name from thismonth, in which it flowers.

May was the traditional month for "wearing ofthe green" in honour of the Earth Mother's newgarment, and of love-making in ploughed fields toencourage the crops. May was a honey-moon of sexualfreedom throughout rural Europe up to the 16th cen-tury. The Church was obviously opposed to this paganreligious festival--without success. All other paganceremonies have been successfully incorporated intoChurch holy-days, except for May Day. Only CommunistRussia has succeeded in perverting May Day for poli-tical ends, turning its phallic symbol into theparade of rockets and gun barrels in Red Square. Inthe United States, on 1st May 1887 and for manysubsequent May Days this was when workers marchedwearing black to display their grief, in remembranceof the Haymarket martyrs. By the 1930's, however, despite the economic depression, these marches ofworking people had become transformed into festive, joyous occasions. The ageless Beltane theme is nodifferent from the intent of Samuel Fielden and theother early' Labor f!ghters qgainst oppression: w en e e d m o r e t ~ m e t o e n J o y o u r l ~ v e 8 .

May is the month of the Two. The month of joyand love-making, of weddings. It is that time in theyear-round story when the Sun-god is hunting in theforest in pursuit of the white doe. As he comesnear, hot on the heels of his red-eared hounds, sheturns at bay and changes back into a young andbeautiful goddess. He woos her and wins her andtheir marriage is celebrated on the first day of Maywith feasting and joy.

    CONSIDERATIONS

The red ears of the Sun-god's hounds tell usthat he is in Aries, just below the horizon at dawn, tinting the morning sky. The goddess he is chasingis the morning star, Venus, ruler of the Dawn andTaurus. Their coupling occurs in Gemini, the sign ofpairing.

April is promise; May is fulfillment. May isthe time when everything seems to be happening, whenlife rises to a peak. May is the birdsong month. Mayis when we rebel most of all against routine, whenwe want to have the largest margins to our lives, when we desire to wander through the woods and overthe fields completely free of all entangling engage-ments.

In the woods are hundreds of white or pink-tinted wild ,flowers bobbing and dancing on slenderstems--the windflowers, the wood anemones. In Greekmythology, Venus created them from drops of blood ofthe slain Adonis. As with Christ's crucifixion, theEarth used to demand the shedding of blood, a red-dening of the sky as the morning star heralds thedawning, before the annual spring dawning of summer.A thousand and more years ago, the Saxons namedthese early blooms of spring "flaw-flowers"--flawmeaning gust--because they do wave in the slightest

gust of air.In the I Ching, this time of the year is repre-

    sented by the Hexa

    THE GREAT MUTATION CYCLE

    THE GREAT MUTATION CYCLE[*1]

    - - C H A R L E S A . J AY N E - ~

THE SECOND-ORDER RECURRENCE cycle of Jupiter-Saturnhas long been known to astrologers as a major factorin the political economy. The two planets are incon3unction every 19.8593 years, having advanced242 59' in the tropical Zodiac. After three suchsynodic ~eriods (59.5779 years) they will have ad-vanced 8 56' in the Tropical Zodiac, this beingtheir first-order recurrence cycle. This no doubtaccounts for the 60-year period being given suchprominence by ancient astrologers. After forty syno-dic cycles the conjunction is only 57' (tropical)back from where it was at the start of the second-order recurrence cycle of 794.3726 years. Duringthis time the two bodies have made ten conjunctionsin each of the four Elements during each 198.593-year per iod. Ancient astrologers considered theseMutations of the Elements (the Tr i g o n a Z i s ) to be ofgreat importance to the political economy.

In the sidereal Zodiac this 794.3726-period isnot a true recurrence cycle. Due to precession, thetwo bodies are still 11 0 away from their startingposition. If we add a first-order cycle of 59.5779years to the second-order cycle's 794.3726 years we

obtain a period of 853.9506 years, by which time therecurrence orb (in the sidereal) has been reduced to3 0 57'. But because of the famous long-period ine-quality between the two bodies (their mutual period-ic perturbations) we have to add yet another cycleof 59.5779 years, to total now to 913.5285 years, before a true recurrence occurs in the siderealZodiac. Studies of history reveal a 794-year rhythm(the tropical recurrence cycle) but not one of 914years (the Sidereal recurrence cycle): this alonehas to be major evidence for the reality of thetropical Zodiac!

    CONSIDERATIONS

In his A S t u d y o f H i s t o r y , the British his-torian Arnold J. Toynbee describes a cycle in thedevelopment of all of the Parochial Civilizationsthat has an average length of 791 years. During thatinterval there is both a period of union (the Uni-

versal State, its length varying from a quarter tohalf of the cycle), and a Time of Troubles, duringwhich the Society (my name) is disunited into small-er warring states and undergoes much civil strife. In some instances the Society is integrated by analien people.

This 791-year cycle has been independentlystudied in China by the historian Dr. J. S. Lee andhis well-known associates Hu Shih and Lin Yutang.[*2] As China has extensive historical records, they were able to measure the amount of internalwarfare at five-year intervals between 221 B.C. and1930 A.D. The semibarbaric but militarily powerfulCh'in dynasty forced the union of China in 221B.C.--the name China is derived from this dynasty. The union was continued under the successive prior-and post-Han dynasties for about 400 years. Theperiod preceding this integration Spengler termed"the period of the contending states". Dr. Lee etalia believed that there had been a previous inte-gration some 800 years earlier under the Shang(1766-1122 B.C.),but adequate historical records donot go that far back. [*3] The next integration wasunder the Sui-TanCJdynasties from 589 A.D. Yan Ch'enacceded to power 1n 581--this is 801 years after thestart of the prior integration in 221 B.C. (there isno year "0"). This union was not as strong as theprior one--always true of the third union. Thefourth and final integration occurred under thealien Ming dynasty of the Manchus in 1368 A.D. Notethat the interval from the Ch'in to the Ming is just2 x 794 = 1588 years! On 1st November 1365 theJupiter-Saturn conjunction was transmuted from theAir signs into Scorpio [*4] at 7 0 , as determined byRalph Kraum. The studies of Dr. Lee et alia show twobrief peaks of internal warfare during the period of

union. During the remainder of the cycle there wascontinuous internal strife with five peaks of vio-lence.

The cycle we are discussing also involves Ura-nus and, to a lesser degree, Pluto. At the end oftwo Jupiter-Saturn mutations (1588.7452 years) Ura-nus has completed 199 revolutions and advanced some-what over 11 0 from its starting point, an approxi-mate recurrence (tropical). At the end of the wholesequence of four Mutations Pluto has completed ~3revolutions and has advanced a little over 17 ,another approximate recurrence (tropical). [*5] Thusthese transpersonal planets must affect the 791-yearrhythm.

Dr. Lee noted that the peak of disunion andcivil strife occurred 540 years after the integra-tions. At such times China has been split betweenNorth and South, and the capital city each time hasbeen shifted from North to South. After 24 conjunc-tions, in 1088.7222 years, Saturn and Uranus return(tropical) to a position only 23' later in thezodiac. Therefore, after 544.36 years, during whichtime a conjunction in each of the twelve signs hasoccurred, their conjunction is just 12' from theopposition to their starting point. This oppositionaccounts for the split of the Society. Uranus bringsthe shift of the capital and the breakup of theoverly crystallized saturnine forms. At the com-mencement of each integration there have been hugeengineering works: in the Ch'in dynasty the famousGreat Wall and large palaces were constructed, dur-ing the Sui dynasty the Grand Canal and more hugepalaces, and 1n the Ming dynasty the restoration ofthe Great Wall and the construction of more canals. From the peak of the "troubles" at the 544-yearpoint to the start of the next integration is250.0115 years, almost the length of a cycle ofPluto, so Pluto will be nearly in the same zodiacalposition at both of these times.

I have been using Erlewine's long-term T i m eT r a v e l l e r program for my Commodore computer. Whileits results are not exact they are close to thecorrect values. I am now taking into account theeffects of orbital eccentricities and of geocentricdistortions.

This program gives 5 0 26' Scorpio on 17th Octo-ber for the Jupiter-Saturn Great Mutation of 1365A.D. Kraum obtained 7 0 Scorpio, to the nearest wholedegree, on 1st November. The conjunction's arc from

    Uranus, then at 160

    22' Cancer, was 1080

56'. On 7thNovember 1910 Jupiter and Uranus are again thissame distance apart (Jupiter 17 0 02' Taurus, Uranus28 0 06' Capricorn). It was on 10th October 1911 thatthe rule of the Manchus was finally thrown off, theninth attempt under Sun Yat-Sen, born a Scorpio in1866. Thus we see the 544.3611-year half-cycle ofSaturn-Uranus actually at work. Add this 544.3611-year period to the 794.3726 years of Jupiter-Saturn,we then obtain 1338.7337 years. Compare this figurewith the 1338.7337-years second-order recurrence

    cycle of Jupiter-Uranus. There is just a single yeardifference! The Great Mutation of the Sui dynasty[*61 occurred on 26th August 571 A.D. at 2 0 58'Scorpio with Uranus 82 0 40'away at 25 0 18' Capricorn.Using the Jupiter-Uranus geriod, we again find thesetwo planets the same 82 40' apart on 3rd July 1911(Jupiter at 28 0 11' Libra, Uranus 21 0 51' Capricorn).It is, therefore, hardly a surprise that Sun Yat-Sen's success, called the Double Ten, occurred on10th October (10/10) 1911. [*71

This same rhythm has governed Graeco-Roman andEuropean societies. Toynbee dated the Roman Empirefrom the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. I prefer 27B.C., the year Augustus became the first Emperor. Asfar as I can determine it the Jupiter-Saturn con-junctions was transmuted into the Fire signs (Leo)a n 26 B.C. One cycle earlier there is some evidencefor the typical weak and short-lived first union inGreece. The next union occurred under Charlemagneand the fourth and final one occurred under theHapsburgs, whose empire covered most of Europe andmost of South America. I date this from the acces-sion of Philip II of Spain (a Hapsburg) in 1556.

Erlewine's Time Travellor program gives aJ~iter-Saturn conjunction on 2nd August 769 A.D. at2 44' Leo. Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of theWest in 800, but he had become sole ruler of theFranks in 671. One cycle later there was a conjunc-tion at 29 07' Cancer, barely short of Leo, on 25thAugust 1563.

    THE GREAT MUTATION CYCLE

If we add the 544.3611-year half period ofSaturn-Uranus to the 26 B.C. Great Mutat10n we ob-tain 518 A.D. The capital of the West was sh~ftedfrom Soissons to Paris around that date. If we againadd this same 544.3611-year period to the Great

    Mutation datein

769 A.D. we obtain 1313 A.D. Alter-natively, add the whole Jupiter-Uranus 1339.8088-year recurrence cycle period to 26 B.C., we thenarrive at 1314 A.D. [*8] In 1309 Avignon becameRome's rival as religious capital of the West. underClement V (the period of the false Pope). Thus amost striking pattern emerges from the long-terminterplay of Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus.

What then of Russia and the United States?Toynbee dates the Russian Empire from 1472 A.D. Icannot agree. No Society's unaori lasts longer thanfor half of the cycle, Le. 397 years. Were hecorrect it would have ended in the latter half ofthe 19th century. While Humpty-Dumpty "fell off thewall" in the Russian Revolution, he was pasted backtogether again by the Communists. On 20th December1603 there w~s a Great Mutation in Fire, not yet inLeo but at 8 46' Sagittarius. I take this to showthe Russian Empire; the Romanov dynasty that had itssway until 1917, commenced in 1613.

    I have used Quincy Wright's two-volume A S t u d ~Of W a r , together with the third volume of S o c i a l a n a~ ul t ur a l D yn am i c8 by Pitirim Sorokin, as sources formy data on internal warfare in the West. This hasconvinced me that Toynbee's date for Russia is tooearly. I therefore anticipate the end of the malignRussian Imperium shortly after 2000 A.D. (the lastJupiter-Saturn conjunction in Earth occurs then),th1s being 397 years after 1603.

In 1802 the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction enteredEarth (Virgo), but subsequently receded again intoFire (Aries) in 1822. The conjunction became estab-lished in Earth (Capricorn) in 1842, this being thedate for the Trigonalis that most astrol0gers agreeupon. In like manner, the first c on j unc t.Lo n in Airoccurred in 1980-81 (Libra), but it will not beestablished in Air until the 0 037' Aquarius conjunc-tion on 22nd December 2020. Shortly after this datethe American or Atlantic Empire should come intobeing. It will embrace, at the least: the UnitedStates-Canada-Great Britain, probably Australia and

    * * *The most powerful economic rhythm is the well-

    known K o n d r a t i e f f c y c l e , whose length has been givenas from 52 to 56 years. It affects:

    1. Stock J?rices

    2. Commod1ty prices3. Interest rates4. Capital formation.

David Williams, a leading investigator ofastro-economics, has given it a length of 56 years.Edward R. Dewey, creator of The Foundation for theStudy of Cycles, gave it a length of 54 years afterstudying fluctuations in British corn prices overthe past six centuries. The distinguished Frenchastrologer, Andre Barbault, writing in T h e A st r o l o -

g i c a l J o u r n a l , correlated it to the 45.36 year syno-aic cycle of Saturn-Uranus. This is too short aperiod. If, however, we measure the synodic cycle ofthe planetary picture Saturn/Uranus = Pluto, we findit is 52.944 years long and the likely basis of thiseconomic rhythm. After that interval the transitingSaturn-Uranus midpoint catches up' with Pluto. SincePluto's true motion varies from one to two degrees ayear, the 52.944 years is onlX a mean value, withthe variations from it account1ng for the disagree-ments about the length of the Kondratieff cycle.Monsieur Barbault was right in principle if not infact. Fifteen periods of 52.944 equal 794.16 years,or one Great Mutation cycle--further evidence of theimportance of Uranus and Pluto in its rhythmic ef-fects.

BOTH EVENTS DEALT WITH here have to do with findinggold: the real kind and the black, oozing kind.

Exhibi t Number One is the Klondike Gold Rush,or rather the placer gold discovery that led to theGold Rush of 1897-1898. The claim that brought it onwas staked on 17th August 1896, around 17:00 UT,along Bonanza Creek south of Dawson, Yukon Territo-ry: 64NOO 139WOO, give or take five or six miles.

Number Two is the first commercial oil strikein Iran, then known as Persia. That historic gushcame on 26th May 1908, at 4:30 LMT, near Masjid-i-Sulaiman: 31N59 49E18.

One event obviously had more lasting and impor-tant consequences than the other: we shall see pre-sently how this difference is reflected in the twohoroscopes. The later and more far-reaching one tookplace in a climate of desperation. The originalpromoter of Persian oil had ruined himself lookingfor an oil field. The British government (eager foroil that could easily be moved under Royal Navyprotection) stepped in and arranged for the drillingto be taken over by a successful Anglo-Indian enter-prise, the Burmah Oil Company. Bad luck continuedfor more long weeks; banks and investors clearedtheir throats menacingly until, on 25th May 1908,the Burmah engineers received a telegram orderingthem home.

Someone, with that glorious sort of hunch whichis both divine and accursed, decided to keep ondrilling the last well overnight. At 4:30, localtime, it made history. Burmah transformed itselfinto the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, later BritishPetroleum; the Persian Gulf slowly turned into theworld's most alarming body of water.

    CONSIDERATIONS

Those who found gold in Bonanza Creek were alsodesperate, albeit in a simpler way: they were star-ving. On 15th August 1896 their lucky strike, as faras they were concerned, was the moose one of themhad shot. The meat would be most gratefully eatenafter days of terrible luck.

The three men--George Washington Carmac and twoIndians, Skookum Jim and Cultus Charlie--had run outof supplies while looking for good stands of timber. They were aware that gold was to be found in thevicinity, as several interesting claims had beenstaked already, but they seem to have spent lesstime panning the streams than fishing.

The moose changed that. Near the spot wherethis convenient animal fell there was a stretch ofgravel, not only gold-bearing, but richer than anythey had ever seen. They spent the next two dayslooking for the best places and on the morning ofthe 17th--after some haggling, quaint to modernears, about whether Indians could legally file aclaim--they staked three likely areas: one for ~achman. This joint claim turned out to be so wellendowed that the news spread around the world. By1899, some 30,000 people had come to the Klondike;almost all of them, along with the gold-bearinggravel, were gone by 1910.

There is some doubt as to the hour we shouldassign to the Klondike claim (in any case, none ofthe features discussed here depend on a precisehour). It probably was not staked immediately atsunrise, but it could not have been staked very latein the morning either. On the same day, the threemen travelled eleven miles through woods and swampsto their camp at the mouth of the Klondike river, where they prepared a raft of logs they were tofloat to a sawmill on the Yukon. It is safe toassume that the staking was done by 8 o'clock, YukonStandard Time, by which time the Sun had been up forthree and a half hours.

Now to the points the maps have in common:

    1. In both cases Jupiter is in Leo--the eventsare twelve years apart--and in major aspect with theSun: a conjunction for the 1896 map (orb 3 0 58') anda sexti1e for the 1908 map (orb 3 0 44').

    2. The Moon's mean node lies on the Sun-Jupiter midpoint (orbs 1 0 07' in 1896 and 31' in19080.

    ]8

    3. The Moon opposes Neptune in 1896 (115',applying) and squares Neptune in 1908 (48').

    21/76

    LUCKY STRIKES

    4. Mercury squares Pluto in 1896 (2 0 29', ap-plying) and is in conjunction with Pluto in 1908(15')

    5. In both maps Uranus aspects Neptune, and

Venus makes a hard contact with their midpoint. For1896 we have Uranus quincunx Neptune (39')and Venusconjunct the Uranus-Neptune midpoint within 46'. For1908 we have an oppos1tion of the two outer planets(3 0 18') and Venus squaring their midpoint (41').

    6. In the 1896 map Mars opposes the Moon-Saturnm LdpoLnt; (3'), while in the 1908 map Saturn makes aaema squaxe to the Moon-Mars midpoint (33').

    7. In 1896 Mars squares the Saturn-Neptunemidpoint (41'), while in 1908 Saturn squares theMars-Neptune midpoint (9').

    8. In both maps there is a region, approxima-tely five signs in extent, devoid of planets. Ifboth map times are correct even within an hour, thisempty region covers the western part of the maps. Thus the mass of planets is either rising or culmi-nating.

Advocates of the "King Plutus" interpretationof Pluto will find reason to rejoice in the Mercury-Pluto contacts; for here were underground resourcesabout which a great many words have been written, and many slogans shouted.

However it is the Sun-Jupiter relationship, with its connotation of easily acquired wealth, which seems most revealing. It may be relevant thatamong twelve lottery, quiz and sweepstakes winnersincluded in Lois Rodden's The American Book ofC h a r t s , there are fiv

    5such contacts: a conjunction

(4 0 51'), a sextile (1 44'), an opposition (4'), andtwo semi-sextiles (46' and 36'). There is also agood number of Sun-Jupiter aspects in the horoscopesof the very rich, and it seems significant that thecontact is as frequent among those who inheritedtheir fortunes as among those who built them. InRgdden's book there are James Buchanan Duke (square,1 50'); Nelson Rockefeller (semi-sextile, 11');Henry Ford II (square, 57'); Howard Hughes (biquin-tile, 59'); Stavros Niarchos (sextile, 59').

    19

A combination of the greater Benefic and thegolden Light or its sign, Leo, comes naturally tomind as the signature of wealth. Astrologers havenot always thought the matter so simple, however. ToFirmicus Maternus (4th century A.D.) "trouble andweariness is indicated by Jupiter in Leo, untilSaturn, having left Pisces, arrives in Aries."

  • 8/4/2019 Considerations Vol 01-3

    22/76

    CONSIDERATIONS

Whether from Aries or elsewhere, the supportingaspect of Saturn was necessary to turn a leonineJupiter from a liability to an asset. Firmicus wouldhave been a good astrologer to consult about theKlondike Gold Rush. The 1896 map has Saturn inScorpio, no help to Jupi t.ez r in fact, the onlyharmonious aspects the benefic enjoys are the sex-tile and trine from Neptune and the Moon, which areoJ?posed to each other: here is a rec ipe for obses-save dreams nourished by jolly optimism, just theright atmosphere to send one packing one's bags forthe Yukon. What awaited there--fftroubleand weari-nessff--can be read on the faces of the would-beprospectors appearing in some photographs taken asthey set off to the gold fields, ill clothed for thecold, ill shod for the terrain. Hundreds dropped outbefore reaching the shiny river-bank they had imag-ined.

In the 1908 map Saturn makes its trine toJupiter from Aries, the very configuration heartilyrecommended by Firmicus. This helps to explain therelative success of the Persian adventure. Anotherfactor is the presence of six planets in cardinalsigns. In the Klondike map all cardinal signs areempty.

ALL THE PLANETS UNDER THE EARTH, save the Moon, show

the first half of life dark, discouraging, and un-successful. The affliction of the fourth indicatesthe "end of the matter" will never be brilliant, andalways unlucky with real estate (although I neverowned any except in a graveyard). Saturn in theseventh provides me most abundantly with bitterpublic enemies. Besides, he makes it evil for mar-riage. I have buried one wife, been divorced, andfor three years have been detained by circumstancesfrom my present wife, one of the best of women, aswell as a very talented artist.

Mercury in a cardinal sign, joined by Uranus, gives me an odd, versatile, original mind. Togetherwith the Moon in a scientific sign, on the cusp ofthe house of science, in sextile to Saturn, denotingmathematics, this shows an intellect above the aver-age. My last years of life will be the best, yet Ican never be very popular, or have much wealth. With"moveable" signs on the four cardinal houses, andthe Moon (the synonym for change), so strong, Astro-logy indicates that I am a restless, unsettled per-son, ever ready to move, and make changes.

In this horoscope, Saturn denotes a cold, un-feeling, cruel, revengeful nature, mingled with therashness and impetuosity denoted by his position inthe sign of Mars, and these conflicting testimoniesmust be mingled with the tenderness and amiabilityof the ascending sign Libra and its ruler Venus,

giving that cast of countenance, which enabled Dr.Simms, the distinguished physiologist, to read mecarefully before a large audience, not knowing thatI was the great unaccountable.

The ascending degree must be selected as the"hyleg", because nei ther the Sun or Moon are foundin an hylegiacal place. The hyleg has the oppositionof Saturn, but so near the extremi ty of the 50 orbfrom the cusp, that the affliction is very light, denoting a strong constitution, but little illness, and extra long life. Saturn is in Aries ruling thehead, therefore ailments of the head are indicated.Mars posited in Capricorn denotes accidents to theknees and lower limbs, and I have had both accidentsand diseases. Additional testimony is given by Ura-nus in Capricornus which indicates odd and acuteailments.

The revenge and vindictiveness are indicated bySaturn; firstly by his opposition to the ascendant, and secondly by his very close quartile to Mercury, ruler of the m1nd. It is the peculiar combination ofthe mental faculties which constitutes the disposi-tion. Mercury disposed of by Saturn, in addition tothe very severe affliction, shows the stubborn, morose, gloomy indications of Saturn.

If the benefics had cast a friendly ray toMercury, a gentler disposition would have been de-noted. The Moon sends a beneficient ray to Saturn, but he completes the circuit by transm1tting it toMercury by a malignant quartile. Thus, not only isthe aspect evil, but the transmitter also.

The Sun rules the house of friends, and is veryseriously afflicted by Mars. This testimony virtual-ly denies friends altogether. But Jupiter in hisdomal dignity in such close sextile to the Sun,promises a few friends among the class denoted byJupiter in his own si~n, such as the wealthy, in-fluential, a r i s t oc r a t Lc , and so forth. But Jupiteris hidden away in a cadent house, as though ashamedto be friendly, and this corresponds quite correctlywith my experience in the matter of friends. Venus,my significator, sends an evil ray to Jupiter, asthough it was my fault that my high positionedfriends are generally ashamed to acknowledge myacquaintance, and I suppose this is so. Mercury, ruler of the house of secret enemies, suffers froman almost exact quartile of Saturn. This denotessecret enemies in abundance, especially such as aredenoted by Mercury--viz., scientific and intellec-tual.

Mars rules the house of public enemies, and asif that were not enough, Saturn is there, renderedmore malicious by being in his fall. All my life Ihave been pursued by bitter public enemies. Probably

my combativeness, and utter refusal to compromise ona n y t h i n g (for I hold that a compromise implies asurrender of something that should be retained),renders me an object of great abhorrence.

The indications of the square of Saturn to Mer-cury are, when enraged, and reason no longer holdscontrol, no man can be more malicious and cruel. Butthere is a sunny side to my nature as shown by Venusand Libra, and when not angry: I get faint if Iattempt to pick out a splinter from under one'snail, and cannot bear to shed blood at all.

    CHART INTERPRETATION

    - -M IC HA EL E RL EWIN E--

I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE the opportunity to contributeto this series. I have always been fascinated toknow how others might go about the process of chartinterpretation. It is an area of astrology whereastrologers differ, and agree to differ.

Soon after I began writing this article I be-

came aware that there is no way I can hope to commu-nicate in a few words what I have spent years evol-ving.

The techniques and even the process that I willdescribe here (like most techniques) represents theessence of what remains from many years of practice. It is very concentrated stuff. Just as important isthe way I put these techniques to work.

I have done readings on a regular basis for

many years. Aside from a great many readings inperson, I have done hundreds of written interpreta-tions through the mail--a discipline in itself. I amquite well schooled in the various astrologicaltechniques available. Aside from testing them in myown work, I have programmed most of them for use byother professionals on home computers. I have alwaysbeen amazed to find that almost every type of tech-nique produces results. In other words, almost everyway of going at the astrological chart seems to makesome sort of sense. In testing the many techniques

for my own use, I have evolved a rule of thumb todetermine which ones I shall follow on a regularbasis.

    CONSIDERATIONS

If I have to put in an hour's work to get backa tiny glimpse of meaning, I won't do it. The tech-niques I use, the ones I mention here, are ones thatwork like mad for me. This is not to say that youwill find them as meaningful, but I want to assureyou that the results I get using them are great inproportion to the amount of effort I put out.

I calculate at least two and sometimes threechart perspectives or dimensions for each reading. These are the heliocentric and geocentric natalcharts to which I add the Local Space (azimuth andaltitude, or Horizon) chart. Each of these charts iserected for the exact moment in time, but from thepoint of view of a different co-ordinate system. These charts give me perspective.

It is also very important to me that you knowhow my charts are drawn. I have included opposite, using myself as an example, the three types I use.As you can see, they feature the open chart wheelwith zero degrees of Aries at the left: in otherwords, the circle of the Zodiac signs.

The positions of the planets are entered intoeach wheel in 360 degree and decimal notation ratherthan in degree-sign-minute or Zodiac notation. Please also notice that I mark the chart anglesAscendant, Midheaven, Vertex (and sometimes Equato-rial Ascendant or East Point) on the outside of thechartwheel. I do not send these sensitive pointsacross the chart as straight lines. In other words,I want the interior of my wheel left open for aspectpatterns.

At this point, you may find two digressionshelpful.

The first and most important of these is aboutthe way I store my charts: chronologically by daterather than alphabetically. In other words, all ofthe charts I have done are stored in a series ofnotebooks in their chronological order. P~rhaps morethan any other technical point, this procedure hashelped me in my practice. Let me explain why.

Since I use the 360-degree Aries wheel, it iseasy for me to see the movement of the planetsthrough the Zodiac when I store them by date.Through the years, I have added so many charts tothis collection that, for most decades, I have achart every few days--sometimes every day. This hashelped me in two ways. As I turn the pages, my chartcollection amounts to a visual or graphic ephemeris.By leafing through it I can watch the chart patternschange on a day-to-day basis. For any date (or

client) I have the heliocentric chart on one side ofthe page and the geocentric chart on the other. Ihave learned a great deal from this very simplearrangement. Most astrologers store their chartsalphabetically--and lose this added value.

I cannot tell you how important it has been tome to have this visual ephemeris at my side during aconsultation or reading. Invariably, clients willask me about other charts during a session: chartsthat they had not anticipated needing, dates thatjust come into their heads. It could be a list oftheir wives or husbands, children, an importantevent, etc. As they mention a date, I glance in mychronological chart collection and almost alwayshave a chart near enough to the date in question toprove of use. I can see at a glance where the pla-nets were, what major patterns were in effect, andthe like.

    I"

The second digression gives you a hint as tohow I approach the signs and the Zodiac. I ceased totake the sign boundaries very seriously many yearsago except as a reference point. Although I work inthe tropical Zodiac, I am not locked into thisarrangement. Neither do I use any of the many side-real Zodiacs. Therefore, it is important to say afew words about what I do use.

I have made it my business to learn quite a bitabout astronomy and cosmic structure. There is a lotof material out there and it is not evenly distri-buted. Instead, it is bunched and lumped here andthere in great clusters. Most of the material in theuniverse is in one of two direction~ (and theiroppositesb: the Galactic centre at 26 Sagittarius(rou~ly 0 Capricorn) and the Supergalactic centreat I Libra (zero Libra) in the tropical Zodiac. This fact alone makes it convenient for me to usethe tropical Zodiac since the quadrature Aries-Cancer-Libra-Cacpricorn fits into this pattern.

One of the big aha! experiences of my careerwas to discover that the traditional inter~retationsof the Zodiac signs come from their relatl0nship tothese great centres... to cosmic structure. In otherwords, the common Sun-sign interpretations describethe activity of the great cosmic centres: Sagitta-rius-Capricorn for the Galaxy centre and Virgo-Librafor the Supergalaxy centre. Therefore I am concernedabout planets passing into, away from and in aspectto these centres.

Look at the tremendous amount of mappin~ andcalculation an astrologer goes through in cons1der-ing life. An average person might very well think itstrange for people to do so much measuring to enjoytheir lives.

In the same vein, to the mind of the averageastrologer, it might seem that Uranian and otherspecialist go through a great amount of preparatorywork. My good friend Charles Harvey in England (nota Uranian astrologer) once told me that he spent sixhours doing the calculations in preparation for aninterview! Not me.

The techniques that have stayed with me tend tobe very simple ones involving the least number ofinvolved minor calculations. In fact, a criticismthat might be leveled at my approach is that itconsists almost entirely of large, sweeping, theme-like gestures. I don't feel that the reason for thisis laziness. My interest has always been in what hasbeen called the dharma rather than the karma of anindividual. Perhaps this is why I always look at ahelio chart before the geo since the helio is (tome) a map of the dharma while the geo seems to mapthe karma. I am not an expert in oriental terminol-ogy, but let me try to differentiate these two wordsbriefly.

Karma, as most of us know, is the onrushing setof circumstances in which each of us finds our-selves--our world set. Dharma, on the other hand, isour way or path (the track) that remains in the wakeof all of the karma that surrounds us. It is whatcomes out in us as we burn through all kinds ofkarma. I feel that the longer we live and the morewe get to know ourselves, the more our dharma ortrue self emerges. I have called this dharma ourparticular archetype, or the kind of individual weare.

I have been so fascinated by dharma that myinterest in many of the more detailed approaches tochart interpretation available via geocentric astro-logy has fallen by the wayside. It is not that moredetailed approaches are not worthwhile; instead, Ifind the dharma of anyone person capable of genera-ting any amount of detail. I prefer generating de-tail rather than studying it. Therefore my maininterest in doing chart interpretations is intro-

ducing my clients (or myself) to the dharma of themoment. Without that insight, I find the geocentricchart a nightmare--for the most part. With the in-sight that dharma provides; I am able to accept andunravel the details (karma) without fear. As you cantell, I would love to tell you more about this. Hereis not the place.

You will see from the charts that I draw in theptolemaic aspects to determine if any large patternsexist. What you can't see is that I am using coloredpencils and pens. I have always been interested tolearn what colours other astrologers use for differ-ent aspects, so I will list mine for you: red forsquares and oppositions, green for trines and sex-

tiles, yellow for quintiles, purple for septiles. Ialso mark the angles on the outside of the wheel:red for Ascendant, blue for MC and green for Vertex.

As I mentioned, I use two and sometimes threedifferent charts: heliocentric, geocentric and LocalSpace.

Now we can begin. I always look first at theheliocentric chart and its aspect patterns. AlthoughI have found most of the standard geocentric techni-ques also work with helio charts, I do not use them. The helio provides me with a map of the inner way ordharma for an individual--what I have termed theirarchetype. I have given many readings at which Inever even took a peek at the geocentric chart. There was no need. Here is as good a place as any tointroduce another of my rules of thumb.

I never volunteer information and never feelobligated to cover any particular amount of groundduring a consultation. In fact, I find that theheliocentric information is qui te often more thanenough for the client to consider.

In a helio chart I look for large aspect pat-terns: a series of ptolemaic aspects that link to-gether to form one of the classic chart patterns(grand trine, T-cross, etc.). In fact, the bottomline for me is to determine whether the client has aT-cross in the helio or not, that is: any oppositionwith one or more planets square to it. A simplesquare will not do. I must have this quadrature typeeffect (or the lack of it) for my work.

    33/76

    CHART INTERPRETATION

For my pur~oses, this simple division of charts(and clients) 1nto two types is sufficient for abeginning. My interpretation becomes at this point aprocedure by which I introduce clients to theirchart-type and determine whether thay have alreadycome to grips with this information. If not, I tryto help them to have a glimpse of it. If so, I tryto discuss their opposite type with them.

I am not a predictive astrologer. Any future-oriented material I might provide my client (ormyself) is based on the obvious extension of thepresent conditions into the future.

I see the role of astrologer-counselor as thatof a midwife of the spirit. We are there to assistat a natural process that is already under way andin full swing. Our task is not to intervene in thenatural flow but rather to make the birth easier, more meaningful.

I tend to see myself more as a welcoming com-mittee than as a therapist of any kind. The onlytherapy that I might perform is akin to simplemassage--here the psyche being exercised rather thanthe body.

This is not to say that my readings are notstrenuous and full of confrontation. It all dependson what is needed. The birth process, although natu-ral, is for many filled with pain, fears and evenstruggle. I find that my counseling sessions arevery energetic, almost always involving some tearsand other signs of feeling.

Having worked through the helio chart, therealways arises some rapport and sense of self-accep-tance. The next step for me is to get a fix for my

client on just where he or she is in life. Now weare not talking about some eternal timeless soul orarchetype but instead how that type is caught in theweb of circumstances that we call day-to-day life.Bring on the geo chart.

I do not use any house system although I haveexperimented with several. They don't fit my firstrule: the technique must work more for me than I forit. I don't get enough out of houses, so I don't usethem. I do use angles, however.

In fact, the geo technique that I find mostuseful is the transit of Saturn as described byGrant Lewi in his book A8trology For The Million8.Despite the many fine articles and books on Saturntransits that have appeared in recent years, for my

money, none goes beyond what Lewi laid out so longago.

The transits of Saturn to the chart angles

describe a scenario that I have tested and found towork. I use them to give my client a picture of thelandscape ahead. This can take a little or a longtime depending upon which angle is being approachedby Saturn and how prepared the client is for thetransition. The kind of details that come from thistechnique never fail to be of great interest andvalue.

There you have a sketch of my technique. Ishould point out that I usually spend considerabletime discussing how clients will relate with others:what kinds and types of people they will be attrac-ted to, how the relationships will go and even whatkind of marriage they can expect. The amount of timespent on this subject depends upon how important itis to the clients and how much they have come toaccept themselves.

In some cases I use a third chart, that ofLocal Space coordinates. If the geo chart is ourstandard, then the helio is the macroscope and theLocal Space the microscope.

How do I interpret my own chart? Here are afew thoughts, starting with my helio chart.

First of all, the absence of a T-cross-likeformation and the presence of a very tight grandtrine involving a number of planets is the key. Itsays to me that m:ydharma should be one of serviceand response to Li f e , The grand trine in this chart

involves the Earth and the famous Neptune-Uranustrine that was exact about a month after my birth. The Earth at my birth day was at the trine point(Sun-sextile point) to the Neptune-Uranus trine. This tells me that I will play a role in elaboratingor presenting this particular trine (and its mean-ing) to the world. My talent will be conceptual.

My geo chart has a great many tr ines and sex-tiles and no T-cross. More of the same. In addition, the fact that all planets are on the western hemi-

sphere points to a life of reception and responserather than of initiating action. My being is inreceiving and modifying.

Right now Saturn is heading for my Ascendant, drawing to a close a long period involving consider-able outward expression. I am in the process ofconsolidating my efforts, about to enter a much more

inward and learning period as Saturn crosses theAscendant.

There you have, in a nutshell, the bare bonesof the technique I use, plus a quick sketch of how Iview myself. I do have more elaborate articles onthe various parts of my technique, should some ofyou w ish to go into more detail. I feel this seriesof articles is a great idea on the part of theedi tors of Considerations and I can't wai t to readthe rest of them.

    SPLITTING

    THE SEPTENARY

    - - K E N G I L L M A N - -

EACH YEAR OF LIFE a septenary ruler (the planetruling a particular septet of years) comes to trig-ger one of the natal planets. That year should beinterpreted in terms of the septenary ruler comingby direction to the particular body. If, for in-stance, Saturn is ruler of the septenary and itcomes, in the third year of the seven-year cycle, tothe position of natal Venus, we can expect that thelife will be effected that year in terms of: acontinuing expansion of the seven-year Saturn cyclethat commenced when Saturn came to the ascendant, inthat there will this year be an attempt to bring outthe Saturn impulse in a definite Venusian form~ thatis, it will affect the Venus areas of the life bycausing a withdrawal from others and some auster-ity--you'll want to reevaluate your relationshipsand also your life's indulgences. If you do not doso consciously, these areas will come into promi-nence in a fated manner.

Within this year, as within any other, we canidentify different periods during which the Saturn-stimulated Venus will express itself through each ofthe seven planets.

    CONSIDERATIONS

PLANETARY PARTS OF A YEARInstead of saying that a year consists of 365-

plus days, we will define it as the Sun's 360 degreemovement between consecutive birthdays. Then, 53 ofthese 360 can be said to be of a solar nature. In aVenus-triggered-by-Saturn-year, therefore, this pe-riod can be described in terms of a constrainedVenus operating through the Sun.

Similarly, 70 of the year's 360 degrees willalways be of a lunar nature, 56 will be in expressedin Mercury terms, 22 in Venus terms, 42 in Marsterms, 33 in Jupiterian terms, and 84 of the year's360 will be expressed in Saturn terms.

The effects of each of these periods will de-pend on how the planetary ruler of the part-year isrelated (by aspect, sign rulership, etc.) in thenatal horoscope to the year ruler (here, Venus) andto the septenary ruler (Saturn in this example).Obviously that part of the year ruled by the planetthat also rules the seven-year septenary will be amost meaningful period.

SEQUENCEOF PLANETS WITHIN A YEARThe initial part of each year will be ruled by

the planet ruling the whole year, the planet that isbeing stimulated by the septenary ruler that year.

    SPLITTING THE SEPTENARY

The final part of the year will be ruled by theplanet that is going to rule the next whole year, the planet the septenary ruler will begin stimula-ting at the next birthday.

Given the above, it becomes obvious that thesequence of planetary parts within any given yearhas to proceed in the reverse direction from that inwhich the septenary ruler is being directed throughthe horoscope. If, as occurs in the first 49 years, the septenary ruler is moving clockwise through thehoroscope then the planets indicating the variousparts of the year will be sequenced anticlockwisefrom the planetary ruler of the year. Conversely, during the second half of life, when the septenary

rulers are returning, mirror-wise, to whence theystarted from in the earlier half of life, movingabout the horoscopic circle in an anticlockwisedirection, the planetary parts of the year willoccur clockwise in their sequence from the year'sruler.

An example will clarify this procedure. Let'scompute these annual parts for Gandhi's first Saturnseptenary rulership, the one beginning at age 21.

Refer to Table 2, on page 37.METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING TABLE 2:

    1. List the age, septenary ruler and year ruler inthe first three columns of every eighth line. Obtainthese by the methods described in the previous twoissues of this magazine.

    2. Repeat the year ruler in the fourth column ofthat eighth line. The planet ruling the year willalso rule the initial year-part, commencing at thebirthday.

    3. Insert the natal Sun's degree and sign in thefifth column and the date of each consecutive year'sbirthday in the final column.

    4. Insert the other six part-rulers in the correctsequence (they will be in the correct order if youensure that the last ruler of each set of seven isthe same as the planet that will be the followingyear's ruler--this will not occur in the final partof the seventh year).

    5. Obtain from Table 1 the period appropriate forthe planet listed in the fourth column. Insert thisvalue in the sixth column.

    6. Add the period listed in the sixth column to theSun's position in the fifth column. Place the an-swer in the fifth column of the next line.

Example: on the first line of Table 2d the Sun atthe start of the year was in 9 Li (9 Libra, theposi tion of Gandhi's birthday Sun). 9 Li = 189degrees. Add the period length (Saturn's) of 84, toobtain 273. 3 Cp has therefore been entered below onon the second line in the fifth column of Table 2.

    7. Go to your ephemeris and obtain the date whenthe Sun occupies the degree listed in the fifthcolumn. Insert this date in column 7. In Table 2

these dates have been listed in the sequence: year, month, day.

    SPLITTING THE SEPTENARY

Once Table 2 has been calculated for a singleseptenary, the dates obtained can be generalized foreach of the years in the other septenaries, andlisted as in Table 3.

Note that in the upper part of Table 3 thedates commence at the birthday, at which date theyear-ruler and the Part of the Year are the sameplanet. These birthdays have been marked with thesymbol *. The dates are then to be r e.ad down the~articular column until the seventh and final line1S reached. The dates then revolve around, withinthe same column, commencing again at the top line,to end (for that year) at the line above the *indicator.

Table 3 says, for example, that in each of theyears 1869, 1877, 1885, 1893, 1901, 1909, 1917 and1918, the planet Mercury is being triggered by adifferent septenary ruler. In each of these yearsMercury is the year-ruler and

In Leap years these dates can be a day off.

For the second Saturn septenary in Gandhi'slife, the seven years beginning at age 72 in 1941, atable similar to Table 2 should be constructed. Therules are the same except that the planetary year-parts now go in a sequence that is the reverse ofthe one used in the earlier septenary, In the ini-tial--the Saturn--year of this second Saturn septen-ary the year-parts will therefore split in the fol-lowing sequence:

    1. Saturn2. Mars3. Venus4. Mercury5. Sun6. Moon7. Jupiter

Other years will be split similarly.

Once a single Septenary has been computed ageneric table can again be constructed, similar toTable 3, This is shown in Table 4, on the next page.

was a year of troubles, one in which Gandhi wouldneed to fight off illness or other attacks on thephysical body. At the end of January 1948 the de-pleted Mars then affected the Sun, indicating the

possibility of (at the least) a violent attack.Mars/Sun is, of course, a tradi tional indicator of"an attack by shooting".

Previously at age 54, a Mars year in the Sun'sseptenary, Gandhi had been attacked by appendicitis.

    THE HINGE YEARS

The hinge years at the 49th and 50th birthdayhave been included in Tables 3 and 4. The year fromage 49 (1918 for Gandhi) is split into its year-parts in the same manner as were the preceding 49

years. The following year, commencing with the 50thbirthday (1919), is the one in which the se~uence ofthe day-parts reverses itself. Using Ghand1's plan-~tary sequenc~, Table 7 gives the splits that occur1n these two 1mportant years.

The repressive Rowlatt Acts were passed on 18thMarch 1919. A month later, but still in the sameyear-part, on 13th April 1919, the Amritsar Massacreoccurred. These two events coincided with a turningpoint in Gandhi's life. Both occur in Gandhi'sfourth pa r t; of the Mercury year. Ruperti in CyaZesof Beeom i nq has stated that the fourth part of anysequence or seven will be a critical time, whenconflicts occur, and a choice is likely to be forcedupon the person by circumstances. The Saturn year-part within the Mercury hinge year can be expectedto coincide with a depression stemming from unpleas-ant news. These two events prompted Gandhi to con-

.centrate deeply on the philosophical problems they

raised. He responded overtly in April of 1920 (theSaturn part of the Sun-year) with his plan of mas-sive--but passive--resistance, a program of economicself-sufficiency: ty~ical when Saturn is stimulatedby the Sun. Of more ~mportance to Gandhi himself, inthe interval between the turning points of these twohinge years, from February 1919 to May 1920, hecompletely changed the direction of his life. Gandhihad always been deeply concerned with improving thelot of the down-trodden. During these two hingeyears he carne to realize the full extent of theproblem he was facing and utterly altered his ap-proach to its solution. More pertinently, he had toface the future of his own death in late-19l8 whenhe was severely ill with dy sen t r yj and saw that ofhis massacred people at Amritsar. He recognizedthe need to accelerate his efforts--his time wasfast running out.

    TOPOCENTRIC PRIMARIES

    RECTIFICATION BY PRIMARY DIRECTIONS

    IN THE TOPOCENTRIC SYSTEM

    - -M AR GA RE T M IL LA RD --

RONALD REAGAN'S BIRTH TIME is not known. When he wasan actor living in California, his chart was repro-duced by Marc Edmond Jones with an early CancerAscendant. Later, after he became President, theWhite House gave out the information that he wasborn "during the small hours of the morning", around2 a.m. and therefore his Ascendant would be inScorpio. Some feel that Gemini (the Great Communi-cator) is more probable , still others prefer A~uar-ius, and recently I have heard that early Capr~cornis favoured by some. European astrologers and someAmericans favour the middle of Sa~ittarius, and GU~de Penguern has rectif ied Reagan s ascendant to 53~' of Sagittarius.

In fact, no one knows. I set myself the task ofrectifying it by the system of pr am ar y directions[*1] according to the method of Nelson Page andVendell Polich, and I think I have succeeded, butonly because Alexander Marr, an expert in this kindof rectification, gave me a magnetic card which hehad programmed for my calculator and which gives theprogressed angles.

[*1] Primary directions are used here with Naibod's measure of59'08".33 = 1 year, and the Topocentri c house cusps. Bothdirect and converse directions are valid. Planets and an-9les are directed to cusps and vice versa, at the birthlocation.

    Example: 27th November 1928 Speech.

    Age = 17 yea rs 295 days = 17.8077 yea rs.

    Primary arc = 17.8077 * 59'08".33 = 17 33'07".6

    Natal RAMC = 34531'

    Nata 1 RAMC + Pri rnary Arc = 36304' = 304'

    When RAMC= 304' at 41N38, ascendant =2201' Cancer(oppos i te natal Mercury).
