Some o the most memorable andpassionate scenes rom 9 plays ocomedy and tragedy were givena modern twist on the very classicthemes o love and death as plied by

Shakespeare. The production wasdirected by Rey Buono, Head o theDepartment o Perormance+Mediaand was part o the students theatrepracticum, which is a requiremento the course. The entire studentpopulation o the Department hadacting roles while the more advancedstudents were solely responsible or theproduction: stage management, lights, sound, costumes, set, publicity andticket sales.

Shariah Soa put in a brilliant perormance asJuliet in Romeo & Juliet which was a dierent

style o acting rom her scenes in the popular TVseries o the past, Spanar Jaya

Buono shared Shakespeare was, aterall, a man o the commercial theatre, interested above all in entertaining

audiences. This production aims tobring his characters into the present, without sacricing the power and scopeo his language. I Shakespeare wasalive today, he would probably bewriting or the screen, not the stage. Indirecting this production, I have triedto rame the scenes in the context ovarious movie genres Bollywood, gothic horror, romantic comedy. Thestudent actors are working in dierentstyles, added Buono.

The interesting staging is evident inthe minimalist set which worked asthe dierent levels o stacked blockseectively separated the variousscenes. The close proximity o theaudience to the stage and the dierentlevels o the stage were eective inadding variety and intimacy to theaction. The simplicity o the propsand the contemporary costumeshighlighted the talent and exuberanceo the actors during their perormances.

Cupid Kills had all the ingredientsto entertain. Truthulness prevailedduring some heart to heart dialogueswhile playing hard to get was actedout with measured timing that whencouples got together, eelings orelie was rie among the audience.Senseless acts o jealousy and rageelicited annoyance while the audienceheld their breath in anticipationo being told o some news. Thisprovided the intensity o emotions thatare the hallmarks o a well-deliveredShakespearean play.

    Polished showmanship was evident in

many scenes. Among the young actorswho made an impact was AmeliaChen who played Beatrice in MuchAdo About Nothing. Chen conveyedher warm and cold emotions towardBenedict with great panache. ShariahSoa who has played in commercialtelevision and is well-known locally orher part in the TV series Spanar Jaya, took the role o a convincing Juliet.Soa was a pleasure to watch as wasNurul Ain Mohd Jamlus as Helena inMidsummer Nights Dream.

Elza Irdalynna, who is an AstroShaw scholar, played the complex

There were 14 scenes in all andstudents had six and a hal weeks opreparation that paid o. The surprisetwist at the end gave new meaningto the whole play. There were greatmovement and dancing to Cupid-themed songs which gave an upbeatnale to the whole production.

We hope that the Cupid Killsexperience will dispel any earin students o the literary giantShakespeares works and to teach

teamwork and responsibility, explainedRey Buono. This it certainly did butmore importantly while entertaining adelighted audience and kindling aninterest in Shakespeare at SyUCs veryown theatre.

    Preparation andStress-Busting Tipsfor Exams

    LIVING WELL

According to Senior Counsellor, Cheang Meng Wai who iswith the Counselling Unit at Students Services, SyUC, Thereis hope or last minute crammers but in todays competitiveworld, I would advise students to prepare early or examsto reduce unnecessary stress. Here are Cheangs tips orexam survival.

Have you ever looked at your calendar and panicked whenit suddenly dawned on you that you have only a month to gobeore the exams?

C Go through your lecture notes or exam syllabus and listthe topics which have to be covered - your own study

    checklist.

CMake a revision plan. Set a realistic number o hours orrevision each week. Plan to work through each o thetopics in the period up to the exam, leaving a ew weeks

or nal revision. Do your best during revision.

C Do not just read. Make short notes and draw diagramsto summarise points.

C Form small study group with your classmates to discussthe topics ater revising.

C To reduce stress, start revising as early as possible. Iyou start late, do not panic, make a plan o what you

have to do and stick to it. Do lots o exam questions

practice, so you know what to expect. And make sureyou get some exercise and resh air. Most importantly,

keep a sense o proportion - there is lie ater the exams.

C Take 10-15 minutes break ater one-hour study and alonger break ater 3 hours o study.

C Play some games when you can nd time to help yourelax.

C Eat well. Have balanced meals.

C Get a good nights sleep the night beore the exam. Donot rely on a lot o last minute revision. It is OK to revise

a couple o things the night beore the exam but do not

get into a panic about things you dont know. Convinceyoursel about how much you do know. Get all the

things you need ready the night beore - pens, pencils,

ruler, calculator with spare battery, etc.

C Dont orget to read the instructions and make sure youknow what you are being asked to do. You should go

into the exam well aware o what is expected o you, but

you should always check. Dont, however, waste a lot o

    time on this.

C In the exam, arrive at the place o the exam early. Whenyou start, nd a question you can do well and do it

straight away, even i it is not the rst question on thepaper. This will build your condence. Keep a careul

eye on the time and keep on schedule to answer

every question you need to - i you nd a question you

struggle to do, leave it and return to it later.

C Be positive. Look back at your original plan, rom timeto time, and realise the progress you have made. With

determination and the right approach, you can surely

    succeed!
