Jerry Falwell Born on August 11, 1933, in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Died on May 15, 2007.

Religious leader, political activist, and television evangelist.

Founder of the Moral Majority

Protestant evangelist, he studied engineering, and then turned to religious studies after a conversion. In 1956 he founded a Baptist church in Lynchburg and later launched an extremely popular television programme, ‘The Old-Time Gospel Hour’, and established Liberty Baptist College. From 1979 his Moral Majority became a political force for advancing the social agenda of the religious right. His writings include Listen, America! (1980) and Wisdom for Living (1984).

Moral Majority U.S. political action group composed of conservative, fundamentalist Christians.

Founded (1979) and led (1979-87) by evangelist Reverend Jerry Falwell

Significant role in the 1980 elections through its strong support of conservative candidates.

One of the largest conservative lobby groups in the United States.

During the 1980 presidential election, the Moral Majority is credited with giving Ronald Reagan two-thirds of the white evangelical vote, over Jimmy Carter

Some issues for which the Moral Majority campaigned included:

• outlawing abortion• opposition to state recognition and acceptance of homosexuality• opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment and Strategic Arms LimitationTalks• enforcement of a traditional vision of family life• censorship of media outlets that promote an 'anti-family' agenda

Moral Majority Coalition

• In 2004, Falwell revived the Moral Majority name for a new organization, the Moral Majority Coalition.

• Continue the "evangelical revolution" to help conservative politicians get elected.

• "21st century resurrection of the Moral Majority"

• Falwell, was committed to leading the organization for four years, but died on May 15, 2007.
