GE Healthcare and Capsule Announce Relationship to Enhance Patient Monitoring and

Medical Device Connectivity 2-22-2011

• GE Healthcare agreement to integrate Carescape patient monitors with Capsule Technologie's Enterprise Device Connectivity system and Mobile Vitals Plus applications.

• As part of the arrangement, GE will distribute Capsule's products.

• Enables GE to provide device connectivity throughout the hospital, both inside and outside the GE product line, to automatically transmit relevant clinical information to a broad range of EMRs.

• As an initial step in the relationship, hospitals can use GE's vital signs monitors with Capsule's Mobile Vitals Plus application, which helps caregivers capture vital signs for multiple patients, validate these clinical measurements at the point of care and automatically send them to the EMR.

Capsule Neuron

Page 13: Connex EVD training Competition

Benefits of Capsule's Mobile Vitals Plus Application

1. Works with the hospitals existing vital signs monitors so hospitals can leverage the investment they've already made and use devices their clinical staff has already been trained on

2. Fits within the design and existing workflow of the unit because the Capsule Neuron is mounted on the roll stand with the vital signs monitor the hospital is already using

3. Enables the automatic capture, validation and submission of vitals right from the bedside ensure that vital signs are charted accurately

4. Improves the timeliness of vitals documentation 5. Ensures that vital signs are charted accurately since they are

captured right from the vital signs check monitor6. Reduces charting duplication and workarounds 7. Enhances clinical decision-making since vitals are readily available

in the patient's record8. Allows the clincian to spend more time on direct patient care

Philips case studyAvera Sacred Heart, Yankton, SD

• “We wanted the information to come from the VS3 and move directly into our interface engine, where we could parse the data and then have it presented to our patient medical record directly. Philips was able to provide that for us.” Chris Nelson, Technology Manager

• True: Avoid the need for an additional server to interact with the HIS.

• True: HL7 compliant message• False: With an extra server, the nursing staff would have

been required to perform an additional step of verifying the data in a specially created secondary electronic health record before the data could be forwarded to the Meditech system.

iSirona• Small startup

– Capsule competitor– Little installed base or experience

• Some (of many) flaws– size and external attachment to the device– battery power for the radio, – separate AC adapter– weight of the attachment roughly 3 lbs.

• Trialed at Pardee Hospital in NC. – Unable to develop a usable workflow for the staff at the facility. – Users had to log into a computer, take vitals on the device then

transfer it in. – Approximately13 steps to transfer vital signs.

Page 31: Connex EVD training Competition
