Brian’s Buzz Looking through some old material I have, I came across this encouraging piece about growth and particularly church growth. All of our churches should be looking to grow, but we cannot all grow in the same way. There are various ways that that churches can and should grow. 1. Churches grow warmer through fellowship. 2. Churches grow deeper through discipleship. 3. Churches grow stronger through worship. 4. Churches grow broader through ministry. 5. Churches grow larger through evangelism. As you reflect upon the direction that your church is heading, each of these elements can play an important part. Ideally churches will grow in each of these areas but the reality is that very few churches are able to achieve that. What about your church. Are you growing, and what do you need to look at? This is not about numbers, but rather the depth and quality of the congregation. As a Presbytery we want to encourage congregations to consider how they want to grow and how Presbytery can support that. Brian Combined Presbytery Retreat 31 October to 2 November The Bremer Brisbane Moreton Rivers retreat this year will be from lunchtime Monday 31 October till lunchtime Wednesday 2 November. The retreat will be led Patrick Oliver with Guest Presenter: Leigh Trevaskis with a theme of “The Care of Souls” helping people to be more mindful in prayer. Please note that numbers for this are limited to 50 people so it will be first in best dressed. Coffee ?

A married couple were arguing who is making the coffee. The wife said that in the Bible it says that men should make the coffee and the husband asked her where it said that. The wife opened the Bible and said: “Right here in Hebrews!”

5 CONFERENCES

The UCA is running some great conferences this year and this is an encouragement to put them in your diary for CEM and training.

Uniting Leaders 2016 Conference 30 August to 2 September The Uniting Leaders Conference 2016 is a 3-day conference featuring worship, special guests, opportunities for peer learning, networking and time to enjoy the Gold Coast winter. UL16 will be the first of a series of annual Uniting Leaders conferences

that seek to grow and develop healthy growing leaders for a healthy growing church. Register now to join us 30 August to 2 September at New Life Christian Church. UL16 is a joint initiative of the Queensland and South Australian Synods and Newlife Uniting Church website For registration information visit www.unitingleaders.com.au. Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry “Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry” is a three day program designed to give participants an introduction to the key concepts and practices of ministering with congregations and agencies in times of transition. (Isn’t that all of them nowadays?) While it is a stand-alone program, it is also the first phase of training that leads to being qualified as an Intentional Interim Minister. Thus, it is useful in itself for anyone in lay or ordained ministry, and also for those exploring whether they are called to Intentional Interim Ministry. From Wed 5 Oct to wed 7 Oct at the Synod Office in Auchenflower. NCLS Just a reminder about registering for the National Christian Life Survey (NCLS) which will be conducted in October. The information collected helps congregations and also helps the Presbytery and Synod with important information for future planning. I would like to encourage each congregation to register. Just to note that the Synod is paying the registration cost ($250) for every congregation. So if your congregation has less than 30 people there is no cost. If your congregation is over 30 people then the cost is only $1.50 per person. Either way the cost will be minimal for the congregation and will help your planning and the planning of the wider church. Further information is in the letter from the General Secretary sent to all congregations in early April or see Uniting News for how to order the surveys

FESTIVAL CELEBRATES SEASONS OF THE CHURCH

The Springtime Festival being held on 2nd and 3rd September at Boonah Uniting Church will feature beautiful floral displays depicting the seasons of the church. These arrangements will reflect the colours and styles used at different stages of the church year.

One of the organisers, Chris Kingston, a talented floral artist herself explains “Floral art is similar in form and design to any other art form. The artist uses symbolism and delivers an interpretation. The difference is that the art itself is temporary. But it can still touch a person’s spirit for a lifetime and bring them closer to God who has created the beauty of our natural world.”

The festival will also have regular attractions such as cakes, sweets, craft and produce stalls. But there will be other stalls featuring scarves and wraps for those who want to update their winter look, and the opportunity to admire Creative Hats by milliner Liz Singleton and to learn about the process of hat-making. Or you could pamper yourself with some products from Body shop.

At 10.30 on Friday, visitors can enjoy music by The Saxy Lady and at 1.30pm, country singer Desiree Crawford will perform. On Saturday at 10.30am the Inverness Highland Dancers will entertain the crowd. Fassifern UCA invites other churches to visit the Scenic Rim for a day, enjoy the attractions and a morning or afternoon tea included in the entry price of five dollars. Or if you wish to stay longer, a light lunch is available as well. The festival will run from 10am to 3pm on both days.
