Where/why did you get your pet? We were really looking for a cuddly companion that would be a great addition to our family. We wanted a pet that would help teach responsibility to the kids through feeding, cleaning, and brushing. Maxie is extremely cuddly and is extremely loving.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name? At first, we all could not agree on a name. We finally agreed on Maxie because it’s a cutesy name. We also call him Max and other variations of the name in Russian.

Anything special or unusual about her (talents/quirks)? Maxie loves to play tag. He chases around Valerie (3) and Aleks (9) around the house. Whenever he runs around the house he stops just right around the corner and glares. Sometimes he will even run in the opposite direction to try and trick you. He is almost like a puppy in that sense. He also loves to chase bugs around the house. He will attempt to climb a wall in pursuit of a bug, but he always keeps a good foot away because he is secretly a little scared of them.

What do you like best about your pet? What we love about him is how much he cares for us. Whenever we walk from the kitchen to the living room he follows us. He constantly walks in between our feet and even cuddles with us on the couch when we watch movies. He loves playing with Valerie and will even roll a ball around with Aleks. He also comes into each of our rooms at night to make sure we are in bed before he goes to his own bed to sleep. During the day, he is a mix of a couch potato and a hunting lion. He will run around the house crazily and then fall asleep in the most random of places five minutes later. He loves to sleep belly up with his paws stretched out.

Any funny stories? One day we could not find him anywhere and then we realized he had hidden himself under bed sheets. He now loves to crawl into our beds and chill under the sheets and play with our feet.

How spoiled is your pet? Give us an example. He is extremely spoiled. He will sit by your feet and whine until you pick him up. He loves to cuddle and is an adorable lap cat but he always has to be sitting in a spot in the house that allows him to see what everyone is doing.

Where/why did you get your pet? A New York Breeder because of a Vermont’s friend’s wonderful dog. This dog, his name was Bertie, went everywhere with our friends and was so friendly and never ran away. We wanted agreat family dog like him.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name? Our family was arguing for days about the name to give him. My dad hadn’t met him and walked in and immediately said, “he is a Dusty”, and it stuck!

Anything special or unusual about your pet? He is the kindest, most attentive dog I have ever seen. If you have left the room for five minutes or five months, his excitement to see you is the same. He snuggles into your neck and just seems to know when you need a hug.

What do you like best about your pet? He loves everyone he meets. He is such a positive role model for all of us. He can break any awkward barrier with his positive attitude.

Any funny stories? He is a white golden, so when he was a puppy and was covered head to toe in mud it was really funny.

What else should we know about your pet? How has the pet enriched your life? Dusty encourages the whole family to go outside because we love to see him run and play. He is such a happy dog and can always put a smile on our faces. We are so lucky to have Dusty!

How long have you participated in this sport? I’ve fenced since freshman year (almost two and a halfyears now).

What is your favorite teacher/mentor’s name?My favorite coach is Aleksander Ochocki.

Where do you normally practice? I normally practice at Advance Fencing and Fitness Academy in Garwood.

Are you on a team? Not currently, but am looking to join one in college.

Have you met anyone famous in this sport? I met Daryl Homer who recently competed at the Olympics.

Have you traveled anywhere related to this sport? I’ve done a lot of tournaments and a few NACs, which are fencing national campionships.

What have you learned from participating in this sport? I’ve learned patience and discipline from fencing and the sport as a whole has given me purpose.

What do you like the most about the sport? I like how while it’s an individual sport everyone comes together and supports each other as though it is a team.

What is your favorite moment? My favorite moment was the first time I won something and the feeling I got when I screamed a victory cry.

What do you plan on doing after graduating? I plan on going to school as a recruited athlete for fencing.

One tip for someone looking to get into this sport: If someone is looking to start fencing I think that they need to really work hard and understand that you have to lose a bunch before you start winning.

How long have you participated in this sport? I have played football since 5th grade..

Are you on a team? I play for Chatham High School

How did the Pandemic impact your sport? There was constant uncertainty of whether we would play the next day. You never knew when there would be a 2 week shut-down or a stoppage.

Have you traveled anywhere related to this sport?Other than travelling to other towns for away games, I have not gone anywhere specific.

What awards or honors have you won?I was able to start on varsity as a sophomore, and am now en-tering my junior year.

What have you learned from participating in this sport? What do you like best about the sport?I have learned about leadership and what it means to be on a team. I have learned of the brotherhood that football brings to players and the team itself. What I like best about Football is the feeling of being on a team and being able to play the game everyday with your teammates. What is your favorite moment?Only playing as a sophomore with a covid-restricted sea-son, there have not been many memorable moments thus far. I look forward to this season along with the wins and newly made memories that will come along with it. I also look forward to being able to play in front of a student body. My first career start is also something I will remember for a long time.

One tip for someone looking to get into this sport:I ask that they have fun and enjoy the game day in and day out alongside their teammates. Don’t take a moment for granted, and stay committed to the game.

From savoring locally grown and freshly picked produce to meeting farmers, entrepreneurs, and community members; Sundays are spent best at the Summit Farmers Market! Every Sunday morning the Summit downtown is buzzing with excitement as more than 40 vendors set up stands displaying a variety of products for purchase at the local market.

Vendors are carefully selected before every season and always have something unique to offer the community. A trip to the farmer’s market will help you see the plethora of one-of-a-kind items you can’t find at your typical grocery store. Some stands are overflowing with colorful and tasty produce grown locally. For example, Dan Lipow, founder of The Foraged Feast, brings nutrient-rich, delightful flavors of local and wild foraged foods, such as baby shiitake and Japanese knotweed, to the market. Meanwhile, other vendors sell foods intertwined with their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. For example, at Anita’s Baked Wonders, Anita and her friend Vicky bring Argentina to Summit with their empanadas and pastries. In addition to foods and produce, other vendors sell stylish jewelry, gorgeous flowers, clay masterpieces, and so much more. The farmer’s market also has guest vendors, which allows community members to add something new and interesting to their shopping bags and weekly menus.

On market days, vendors are eager to speak to community members. You can often find them presenting their products, talking about their agriculture/sustainability practices, and answering customer questions. Every vendor is not only very passionate about what they do and proud of their products; but they also love to share advice, information, and recipes to help you get the most out of your purchase. Farmer’s markets are one of the few places where people can connect with their food/

local eventsShop Local at the Summit Farmers Market produce by meeting the people and families who grew or cooked

them. For example, at Adventure Kitchen, Lynley Jones sells spice blends and shares multiple new recipes every week to help people show off the delightful flavors of their spice cabinet. “Once you start selling it is very hard to let it go because you get to see the people that come by and you start making a relationship with everybody so it’s hard to leave,” explains Anita.

Moreover, the farmers market is a community hub — a place to meet community members, bring your children to play and eat, and unwind with a stroll outdoors. It’s similar to going to a high school football game, there are always new people to meet and long-time friends to talk with. In addition, the Summit Farmer’s Market holds community-wide events such as blueberry, apple, and pumpkin pie competitions. While the weather is still warm, take this opportunity to create meaningful relationships with neighbors and unwind and relax outdoors.

When you come to the farmers market, grocery shopping becomes a pleasure rather than a chore. Lipow explains, “The Summit Farmers Market is regarded as one of the best markets in the state.” There is nothing quite like the high-quality products, community buzz, and buyer-seller relationship at the market. Moreover, when you shop at a stall at the farmer market you are helping to support local businesses and local farmers and their families. Additionally, the dollars you spend today help farms and businesses provide the Summit community and your family with wonderful products tomorrow.

To learn more about vendors and their products please visit their respective websites or their stands at the Summit Farmers Market. The Summit Farmers Market is running every Sunday from April 18 until November 21, from 8 am to 1 pm. It is located at Park & Shop Lot number one, on the corner of DeForest Avenue and Woodland Avenue. The next Sunday, you’re cooped up in your house or need to revamp your weekly menu, grab your bike or your car keys and come to the Summit Farmers Market!

You’ve heard the name, seen her face on billboards and “For Sale” signs all over New Jersey. Maybe she’s been on your TV? Michelle Pais is no stranger to the spotlight. This powerhouse Real Estate agent is taking the industry by storm. If Real Estate has an “IT GIRL,” Pais is definitely IT! Michelle and her team, the Michelle Pais Group was named by The Wall Street Journal’s Real Trends report as the #1 team in New Jersey and #22 in the nation under the medium size team category for both units and volume – 2019.

The Real Estate Brokerage she founded Signature Realty NJ, now ran by both her and her husband Jonathan Steingraber just made the INC. 5000 list as one of the fastest growing companies in Amer-ica with a 356% growth! When it comes to selling Luxury properties, Michelle Pais group and Signature Realty NJ is a brand you need to know about. And now they are excited to call Summit their new home. Their new headquarters is located at 357 Springfield Ave.

We sat down with Pais to find out more about her, her family and her vision.

First off, how is your beautiful baby daughter? How is the family making out?

We just celebrated Madison’s first birthday. It was the first time a lot of our family came together since the pandemic started. She’s grow-ing up so fast and she is the sweetest little girl! We are truly blessed.

How do you juggle family and business?

Fortunately, I have an amazing team and staff that help me man-age the business. It allows me to have balance and be efficient and productive.

What is the current state of the real estate market locally? We’ve all seen the rush from the City to the burbs. Is this trend slowing?

We are still experiencing multiple offers and bidding wars on the majority of our listings and yes it is still a sellers’ market. Most of our buyers are coming in from NYC prepared to pay top dollar for a home. Personally, we have not experienced a slow down. It’s been a very busy year thus far.

Should we be selling, buying?

BOTH! It’s a sellers’ market for sure and many are capitalizing on their investment. Interest rates are also very low so buyers are

also taking advantage of the opportunity . We are also see-ing sellers upgrade to a larger homes and second homes. When taking into consideration how low rates are the monthly cost is actually lower, even at higher prices. For example, an $800,000 mortgage at 4% interest would have cost $3819/month and a mortgage at $950,000 at 2.5% is only $3750/month. So even at $150,000 higher price you are still paying less on a monthly basis. So sellers get more and buyers pay less on a monthly basis. Win-win. If rates tick up then we will see a pull-back in values.

Your personal success story is clearly demonstrated in your company’s dominance across the State of New Jersey, but does the fact that you have lived locally for several years give you an insider’s understand-ing of towns like Summit, Chatham, New Vernon, Mendham, etc.? That’s a huge competitive advantage for anyone looking to sell or buy, correct?

I LOVE THIS QUESTION! If you had asked me this ques-tion 10 years ago, my answer would have been completely different. Although I live locally and have sold thousands of homes in the area, 99 percent of buyers today find their homes online so being “local” or needing to have a phys-ical office location in every town you serve is completely unnecessary. Buyers don’t hire you based on where you live or what company you work for. They call you as a result of what they see online. Digital marketing is king. Your online (both digitally and socially) presence is key. This is why sellers hire us. Because the right buyer(s) can be anywhere, so we market EVERYWHERE.

We have all had to learn different ways to navigate successfully to keep our businesses alive during the past couple of years. Tell us how you continue to be so successful despite the challenges?

Covid has taken a toll on all of us but it’s also made a lot of us realize what’s important and to be grateful everyday. From a business perspective the real estate sector has been a beneficiary. We did have to make some major shifts in how we run the business and thankfully our agents have adapted well to the changes.

Your company has always led the industry in terms of how you train your team and support its growth. Is this a key factor to your success and why a home-owner or buyer should do business with you?

There are so many benefits with working with an independently-owned brokerage and specifically at our brokerage we do have four trainings per week and out-standing support. We pride ourselves on offering the best support and are big into metrics, our average response to support is 5 min and 17 seconds and so far this year we have had over 3000 support tickets that we were able to solve. The more training and support a brokerage offers it’s agents the more buyers and sellers benefit.

And now your company is taking on a whole new effort in terms of offering comprehensive training to those people interested in pursuing a career in real estate. Why did you decide to undertake such an exciting task, did you see a need for it?

I read an article by CNBC that over 90% of people polled are considering changing careers. They are calling it “The Great Resignation.” Our goal is simply to offer a vehicle for those indi-viduals to get trained and prepared for a rewarding career in real estate at a low cost. Our goals with the real estate school are not just for individuals interested in a career in real estate but to also bring much needed education to both buyers, sellers,

and individuals interested in investing in real estate. They can find out more by visiting SignatureRealtyAcademy.com. The cost of our real estate 75 hour pre-license course is $99 plus the cost of the book at $45.

What did we miss tell us a bit more? Aside from being a Real Estate Powerhouse, tell us something we don’t know about you. Who is Michelle Pais?

I love my line of work and it’s amazing to meet so many people and help them hit their goals. For many years I have lived by a saying, “how you do anything, is how you do everything” and that goes for being a mother, wife or your realtor.

Where in Summit/Chatham area have you lived and why do you consider it such a special place? After having our second child, we wanted more space, a yard, and proximity to my husband’s work in Short Hills. I had left my city corporate job to start Arora Wellness, which allowed location flexibility. We looked at neighboring towns, but fell in love with a house in Chatham. It was perfect for us, but we really lucked out on one of the best streets in town! Our neighbors are the friendliest, most helpful and welcoming people, and the street has a decades-old tradition of hosting family-friendly monthly happy hours. It happens on a Friday, and is truly special — the kids get to play, the adults socialize, and everyone enjoys the company and good food. It’s this kind of community, exceptional neighbors, and a safe place, that I cherish about Chatham.

What do you hope your work does to enhance the lives of area families?Through Arora Wellness, I work with adults struggling to take care of everything in their lives, especially themselves. As a functional medicine health coach, I teach practical, healthy lifestyle routines in food, fitness, stress and time management; specific to each person. We find root causes of imbalance in their unique body, and use these routines plus targeted supplements to reclaim their health. The result is that my clients build strength, confidence, vibrancy, and live their most joyful and healthy lives. By working with parents, there is a strong ripple effect where children benefit too.

Using a functional medicine approach requires commitment and dedication, both by client and coach. Our solutions are not a “pill for an ill,” but rather a series of steps to create lasting and sustainable change. When it comes to feeling that sort of vibrancy in life, the effort is 100% worth it because it is when you feel your best that you are best able to bring your gifts to the world!

Meet Payal AroraWhy is the women’s empowerment organization B.I.G. a valuable resource for you?Leaving behind NYC and Hoboken was challenging. I craved the same professional and personal connections. Luckily, I attended a presentation by a few B.I.G. members, and subsequently, a “pod” meeting. Impressed by the insight I gained from just one meeting, and the friendliness of the women, I joined that same day! Then, and even now through the pandemic, B.I.G. has been an amazing way to connect, learn, be inspired, and see friendly faces. local health

Leukemia is often thought of as a childhood disease, but the blood cancer is most common in older adults: 67 is the median age of diagnosis. While prognoses for adults lag behind those for children, breakthrough treatments are improving outcomes for acute leukemia and allowing people to enjoy their lives.

Atlantic Health System has one of the largest adult leukemia programs in New Jersey, and conducts groundbreaking research in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the more common type of acute leukemia in adults. Treatments developed in recent years are much better tolerated and effective at keeping patients in remission for years. I have several patients in their 80s who began treatment three or four years ago and are doing well. Not that long ago, we would have expected someone that age with AML to live no more than a year.

Broadly, leukemia is categorized based on the type of white blood cell involved, myeloid or lymphocyte, and whether the disease is acute (spreading quickly) or chronic (slow-growing).

Patients with chronic leukemia typically don’t have symptoms, which means the disease is revealed by blood work showing high white blood cell counts. Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) do not necessarily require treatment at diagnosis. Those with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) receive a targeted therapy: beyond taking a daily pill, they are able to live life normally.

People with acute leukemia usually feel sick at diagnosis. They may have extreme fatigue, fever, bruising on their skin or gum bleeding — a sign of low platelets. Malignant cells called blasts grow out of control and harm the normal production of white, red blood cells and platelets. They need immediate treatment.

Atlantic Health System has assembled an excellent team of medical professionals for our leukemia treatment program at the Carol G. Simon Center, located at Morristown Medical Center. The team includes oncologists, oncology nurses, nurse navigators, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and research nurses, all of whom treat our patients like family.

Patients may receive chemotherapy or targeted therapies, or a combination of these treatments. Younger, healthier patients with high-risk features may undergo a bone marrow transplant.

Older patients or those with other serious medical conditions may not be candidates for chemotherapy. For them, we use an

alternative treatment. One combines a hypomethylating agent with venetoclax, a targeted BCL-2 inhibitor. The treatment is both effective and well tolerated.

We participate in numerous clinical studies to improve the outcome of acute leukemia. They involve targeted therapies used in combination with chemotherapy and other agents. Protocols we have tested in the past five years have since become FDA-approved treatments.

The cause of leukemia is not well understood. While there are risk factors — exposure to high doses of radiation, certain pesticides and solvents, and prior chemotherapy treatment — most people with leukemia do not have them.

I recommend people maintain a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly. Should symptoms arise, get them checked out right away. The good news is, we are really making progress. Survival rates are improving. The future is promising.

What’s the difference between Botox™ and Filler? This is a question I answer frequently. Botox™ and other brands of neurotoxin are medically-indicated for cosmetic use to treat dynamic lines (lines made by movement) by relaxing specific facial muscles. Maybe you’ve heard of the “11’s”, forehead lines, and crow’s feet? These are examples of areas that can be treated with Botox™. Lasting approximately 3-4 months, research reveals correlations between the longevity of Botox™ treatment outcomes and patient consistency in treatment. Currently, my Botox™ lasts about 5 months because I have been receiving treatments consistently for 7 years.

Botox™ is indicated for many uses in facial aesthetics and is highly effective for treating under-eye lines, jawlines, platysmal bands (neck), pain caused by TMJ or bruxism, Bell’s Palsy, and excessive underarm sweating (hyperhydrosis), among others. At FACE Aesthetic Artistry we often treat patients with MicroTox™, an advanced technique that tightens the skin and reduces the appearance of lines where typical Botox™ treatments would be ineffective.

Filler is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a sugar molecule made in the body. HA attracts water and collagen, and creates volume. Fillers are simply HA synthesized into a gel that is injected into various areas of the face to augment or restore volume loss. Because we make HA in our skin, our bodies respond well to treatments using HA fillers. Fillers can last anywhere from 1-2 years. The aesthetic results, however, genuinely depend on the expertise of the provider and their knowledge of facial anatomy.

Who says YES to fillers? Patients of all ages, that’s who! For those in their 20’s-30’s, augmentations or enhancements of specific areas (i.e., lips, chin, jawline, cheeks) are typical. For patients in their 40’s-60’s (even 70’s), filler procedures target volume loss and restoration. We lose volume as we mature – it’s inevitable. Luckily, HA filler treatments are available and accessible for those seeking volume loss restoration and facial balance depleted by maturation and aging.

Consumer reports don’t lie! – people pay for Botox™ and fillers. Aesthetic outcomes live on the face and therefore cannot lie either! HA fillers and Botox™, when injected by providers specializing in facial aesthetics can create outstanding results.
