The Final Word

Writing a Last Letter When Youre Healthy (NewYork Times)

Over the last 15 years as a geriatrics and palliative care doctor I have had candidconversations with countless patients near the end of their lives The most commonemotion they express is regret regret that they never took the time to mend brokenfriendships and relationships regret that they never told their friends and family howmuch they care regret that they are going to be remembered by their children ashypercritical mothers or exacting authoritarian fathers

And thats why I came up with a project to encourage people to write a last letter totheir loved ones It can be done when someone is ill but its really worth doing whenone is still healthy before its too late

Its a lesson I learned years ago from a memorable dying patient He was a Marinecombat veteran who had lived on a staple diet of Semper Fi and studied silence allhis life A proud and stoic man he was admitted to the hospital for intractable painfrom widely spread cancer Every day his wife visited him and spent many hours athis bedside watching him watch television She explained to me that he had neverbeen much of a talker in their 50shyplus years of marriage

Privilege does have its benefits Gene Herrick (Email) ‐ The ladder of life is not the same for everyone The general matricula譥on for most folks is to go to school get an educa譥on and then geton the boججلom rung of the ladder for ones career advancement Some get further up theladder than others but that is life for the masses

However the direc譥on of that career ladder some譥mes changes especially for privilegedfew One case in point is the curious and somewhat devious climb plan between NBC and taintedstar Brian Williams who was the big name and anchor of NBCs Evening News Williamsearly in his life apparently climbed UP the ladder as is customary However Williams atelevision personality at the top of the ladder of success commiججلed a dastardly and grosserror for a member of the elite media corps Williams lied He shared an experience henever had The rung on his ladder broke and NBC slapped the knuckles of his hands andput him in the puni譥ve closet Williams not quietly railed against his punishment but got his knuckles slapped again andhe quieted down However his cozy buddies and bosses at NBC worked their plan andquietly inserted Williams back into the main line of TV by calling him in for specialoccasions at night on their cable network MSNBC Somewhat quietly he wouldoccasionally appear Then NBC started using him more How short the memories Now with much fan‐fare Williams has just been given his own program anchoring thenews at 11 pm on MSNBC The interes譥ng part is that Williams is now back on the careerladder but lo at a not‐so‐good 譥me slot Instead of climbing the ladder UP this 譥me hemust climb the ladder DOWN to reach that cherished evening news slot again Privilege does have its benefits
