Founded in 2018, the Empowering Kids Organization (EKO) is a nonprofit that helps underprivileged K-12 kids in Summit and surrounding communities gain access to quality education.

After years of being active Summit residents, Paola Acosta, Patricia Fontan, Teresa Usme, and Maria Orgeira, recognized that some kids in the community did not know how to access education and cultural resources. The four believed that all kids should be given equal educational opportunities regardless of their socio-economic background.

With the experience of coming from an international background and living abroad, the four founders understood the needs of multicultural families and efficiently channeled their volunteering efforts and experience into starting EKO. Funded by grants, community partners, in-kind services, and individual donations, EKO began its first programs in the spring of 2019.

EKO offers kids a variety of educational programs ranging from math to language arts. By providing instruction that is carefully tailored to meet students’ needs and interests, EKO’s programs instill a solid understanding of the subject and build students’ confidence.

Orgeira explains, “No doubt the academic component of our programs makes a difference, but the real impact comes from the human connection they have with teachers, tutors, and mentors.”

Additionally, EKO offers arts and cultural programs to help kids think in diverse ways, interact with others, exercise their creative expression, and have fun. For example, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and EKO partnered together to offer the Outreach Art Program. As part of the program, kids visit the Arts Center several times and then work on an art project based on ideas and themes learned from viewing the exhibits.

Other programs include field trips to Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the Summit Police/Fire Department, New York City, museums, etc. An EKO student explains, “I was able to visit places that I’ve never visited before and I feel more connected to the community.”

EKO offers parent programs as well. EKO considers parents an essential part of their kids’ educational journey. Orgeira explains, “You can teach and also motivate any student, but if they go home and their family is not on the same page as the kid, the efforts will probably result in an incomplete outcome.”

EKO offers multiple family-oriented seminars that guide families through the college admissions process and include lectures with college admissions counselors. Annually, 80 kids and families benefit from EKO’s vast number of programs!

Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist known for his work on educating children, once said, “The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.” In line with Piaget’s philosophy; teachers, tutors, and volunteers at EKO are committed to providing only the best education for the next generation. EKO students will forever remember the educators that inspired them, the programs that changed how they looked at the world,

and the fun adventures they had with friends. Through EKO, students are provided the fundamentals for which they will build the rest of their life!

Where/why did you get your pet? This past Christmas my family and I took a trip to the Outer Banks. I got Duck from a beach store in the Outer Banks called Super Wings. There were hundreds of hermit crabs in a cage, and I picked Duck because he had a really cool yellow shell with a red snake on it. I also liked that he was very active, and was climbing all over thewires of his cage.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name? Duck is named after Duck Island in North Carolina. Additionally, when I got Duck my sister got two other hermit crabs who unfortunately passed away a few months ago. She named the other crabs Corolla and Kitty after Corolla and Kitty Hawk which are also in the Outer Banks.

Anything special or unusual about her (talents/quirks)? Duck can often be found sitting in the water bowl in his cage. Duck also does not like cold weather and enjoys being placed next to our fireplace for warmth. When Kitty and Corolla were alive, he used to always sleep with them in a little huddle.

What do you like best about your pet? I like that Duck is very easy to take care of. I clean out his cage once or twice a week and give him food and water and that’s it!

Any funny stories? Duck enjoys being let out of his cage and exploring our home and outside. One time, when I wasn’t looking he crawled out the backdoor and into the snow! I picked him up right away and dipped him in some heated water so he wouldn’t get frostbite.

How spoiled is your pet? Give us an example. Duck is not spoiled at all. He is a very active and adventurous hermit crab. Next time I visit the Outer Banks, I would like to get a few more hermit crabs so that he has some more friends.

What else should we know about your pets? How have they enriched your life? I love hanging out with Duck and watching him play and discover new things. Even though Duck and I can’tcommunicate well, I know he is glad to be with me because he always holds on to my finger as though he isgiving me a hug. I could not have asked for a better pet!

Where/why did you get your pets? We got them from a farm in Oldwick, New Jersey. We got these 2 goats because they are cute and funny to have. My mom is allergic to dogs so she thought a goat would be a funny and cute alternative. My family is a big animal family, we love animals.

Is there a story behind their names? There is no story behind Clover and Finley’s names. We just picked cute names.

Anything special or unusual about them? The special thing about our goats is that they are the only family pet goats in chatham. We got Clover and Finley when they were 2 weeks old and we bottle fed them for 3 or so months.

What do you like best about your pets? We love how cute, funny, sweet and friendly they are.

Any funny stories? Finley likes to steal our food when we are eating. He stole a slice of pizza from my hand.

How spoiled are your pets? Give us an example. We take them for walks in the woods, we like to let them run free in our whole yard sometimes.

What else should we know about your pets? People are always so surprised about how friendly and loving the goats are. They really do love people. We bottle fed them from when they were little babies so I think they easily grasped onto humans and knew how to be careful around them.

How have the pets enriched your life? Having an uncommon pet has made our lives more fun and interesting. It created new experiences, bottle feeding the goats when they were little and just the way to interact with them is so different and fun.

How long have you participated in this sport? I’ve been playing soccer since about age 4.

Are you on a team? I am on the Chatham High School Varsity soccer team and used to play at the club level for STA.

How did the Pandemic impact your sport?Luckily, the Pandemic did not appear to impact our team as much as you would expect. We lost a few really valuable things like Cougar Night and bus rides, and this may sound cheesy, but the team this year was so magical in itself that we did not let the Pandemic bring down our spirits.

Have you met anyone famous in this sport/activity?When I was little, I used to go to Red Bull’s games all the time and ask the players to sign my forehead. I can’t quite remember their names but I sure remember hav-ing sharpie stains on my face for days.

What awards or honors have you won?My club team reached Nationals twice. We never won the whole thing, but we got to play on a huge stage with teams from all over the nation. I was also recently named captain for the 2021 season which is an incredi-ble and humbling opportunity.

What have you learned from participating in this sport? What do you like best about the sport?I have learned that the best thing about soccer is that no matter what, you can never ever know what to ex-pect or stop learning from the sport. This ties into les-sons about persistence and determination, but the most important thing to me is that every game and every practice is a new chance to improve or discover some-thing within yourself. Coach Adair always tells us to “gamble it,” and I think this is one of many important lessons that apply to both soccer and real life. What is your favorite moment?You would think my favorite moment of this year would be winning States, but it was actually the night before,

local athleteC where the whole team hung out and drank our gallon jugs of water. We were all so ner-vous, but being together was so much fun that we forgot about the pressure. Our unity as a team was truly the reason we ever won at all.

What do you plan on doing next year and after graduating?This upcoming year I plan to have another amazing soccer season and enjoy all the perks of being a senior. After high school, I look forward to college and starting a new chapter of my life. Two things I’ve always wanted to pursue are being a lawyer or a flight attendant. I can’t wait to see what happens!

One tip for someone looking to get into this sport/activity:One piece of advice that I have is to never ever give up. Be it a bad game, a little bit of a slump, or the critical last ten minutes of a tied game. Perseverance is truly one of the most important aspects of the sport and it can get you through a lot of adversity on and off the field.

The show will feature Pro/Am Ballroom dancers

of all ages and levels. The audience will get to see

various Ballroom Dance styles - Waltz, Fox Trot,

V. Waltz, Swing, Hustle, Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba,

Salsa just to name a few.

Arthur Murray Dance Center Students take

weekly lessons to prepare for the show. It’s a

production and truly enjoyable for all age groups

to watch. The costumes all fit the dance styles and

student’s level of dancing.

Tell us a bit about yourselves.We are a very active family that is always looking for a new hike, playground or pizzeria to discover. Ryan grew up in Western New York and attended University of West Virginia and received his MBA from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. Dana grew up in Union County and attended University of Connecticut. Our son, Max (3), attends school at the Summit JCC Early Learning Center and Cooper (2) will be joining him in the fall.

How long have you lived here and/or why did you move here?We moved here in 2015 from Hoboken when we were looking for a place to start our family. We were drawn to the proximity and accessibility to New York City while still having a close-knit, active community with a vibrant downtown and various green spaces.

Tell us what you love about Summit.We love walking around downtown, exploring art installations, story time at the library, and trying various restaurants all over town. On Sundays, you can find us at the Summit Farmer’s Market and catching up with friends for a coffee at Boxwood or a smoothie at The Juice Caboose. We’ve also been enjoying lots of time at the Summit Aquatic Center this summer and are looking forward to fun filled family events and such as Summit Street sounds and other community programs!

How are you involved with the community?Dana serves on the Board of Directors of the Junior League of Summit as the Nominating Director. She also serves as the co-chair of the Parent Committee for the Summit JCC Early Learning Center, where Max and Cooper attend school. Ryan is a member of the Elks and recently assisted several local F.L.A.G. chapters with grant applications and community outreach. Since 2017, Dana and Ryan plan and host an annual charity event at the Summit Elks Lodge called February Fun Fest that raises money for various charitable organizations.

Tell us about your neighbors, friends and residents in this town. We are incredibly lucky to have the most wonderful neighbors, from young families to multi-generational residents. There are many long-time Summit residents in our neighborhood, who were so welcoming when we moved to town and continue to be a wonderful support system. We have met so many great people at various activities around town including local playgrounds, neighborhood walks, and through the Summit Soccer Club.

How did you decide on the in-dustry (events that led up to where you are now, etc.?)

I have been a nurse since 2010 and injecting since 2017. Given the op-portunity to move away from hos-pital rounds and into medical aes-thetics, I quickly fell in love with the artistry in injectables; it helped me to assist my patients in feeling amazing on the outside, which we all know transfers to the inside! Working as a critical care nurse in acute situations for years, I was used to saving lives. We want local women to know that they may be eligible to enroll in a landmark study at Overlook Medical Center, which uses a simple blood test for the CA-125 protein to screen women who are at low risk for ovarian cancer. The purpose of the clinical trial is to help determine whether this test can catch ovarian cancer early in women who would not normally be screened for it. Overlook and other Atlantic Health System hospitals are the only centers in the New Jersey-New York area to participate in the study, and have the third highest enrollment numbers in the nation.

Atlantic Health System signed on to the national early detection study in 2011. More than 1,200 women have enrolled in the study at Atlantic Health System hospitals.

Most ovarian cancer is detected too late, at stages 3 or 4, with a 75% chance of recurrence after treatment. The CA-125 blood test is currently only used in women who have had ovarian cancer or who already show symptoms. A high CA-125 marker may indicate the need for further testing, however, by that time it is often already late-stage cancer.

Many women do not know that ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer. If caught early, however, ovarian cancer has a 90% five-year survival rate. We want to encourage all women—those at low risk as well as those who may be at higher risk—to participate in this study, and speak with their ob/gyn about what types of testing might be appropriate for them.

Study participants have their blood drawn once a year for at least three years, and answer a questionnaire. Depending on their level of CA-125, more frequent blood draws may be done and/or an ultrasound test may be given.

Among the risk factors for ovarian cancer are:

• a family history of breast or ovarian cancer;

• having certain cancer-related genes;

• a personal history of breast cancer prior to age 40

• Ashkenazi Jewish heritage and a personal history of breast cancer prior to age 50 or a first or second degree relative with ovarian cancer or breast cancer prior to age 50

Women interested in the CA-125 study may be eligible if they do not have high risk factors and meet other criteria. Study

participants must also be post-menopausal and between the ages of 50 and 74.
