Apr 2015 | page 3 Greetings! Clemencia, our Executive Director, has taken an extended leave of
absence to deal with a family situation in her homeland of Colombia. Our wishes are with her for the best possible outcome. The Board is working with Tina and Tania (with input from Clemencia) to develop a staffing plan that will see us through until Clemencia returns later this year. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience. Tina and Tania need your full support to ease the transition and minimize stress.
Thanks to the students (Aprilando Suryokusumo, Jenny Peng, Betty Li, and Joao Victor Lima) at the UBC Sauder School of Business for organizing the Timeless Talent event on March 21st. Some very talented performers played to a packed house. The students showed what could be achieved when young people and seniors work together – we learned a lot about each other and it should prove a model for future initiatives. More good news - all proceeds go to our programs!
So far we have applied for grants from the City of Vancouver, the United Way, the Province of BC (Gaming Grant), and New Horizons. These provide our core funding and will allow us to deliver programs in 2015 at a similar level to 2014. This year, the Board will be increasing its efforts to obtain private funding, including from local businesses. We will be investigating use of social media to get our story out to the general public, and generate funds through sim-ple and direct donation mechanisms.
If you have any ideas for new programs, or for improvements to existing programs, please talk to our staff. One of our real challenges is trying to contact seniors and provide them with de-tails of our program – we do not have good information on the seniors in our catchment area. If you know of any seniors who would like to attend the Centre, please let us know.
In a new initiative, we are working in collaboration with the West End Seniors Network and 411 Seniors Centre Society to deal with issues that affect seniors. Recently we cooperated on an approach to Mayor Robertson asking him to become a champion for seniors in Vancouver. We are not happy that we have to go cap in hand every year asking for funding - wasting valu-able staff resources re-justifying our needs every time. This is simply not good enough, and our joint group intends to make enough noise on your behalf to change how we are funded.
I would like to again thank Tina and Tania for stepping in while Clemencia has been on com-passionate leave, and for assisting most effectively in helping to plan for the challenges that lie ahead.
Best wishes,
Steve

10 We Were Children Fri, Apr 10, 1-3pm, FREE
In this feature film, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s resi-den/al school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children who were forced to face hardships beyond their years. As young children, Lyna and Glen were taken from their homes and placed in church-run boarding schools, where they suffered years of abuse, the effects of which persist in their adult lives. We Were Children gives voice to a na/onal tragedy and demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Tea service will follow.
