A.H.O.Y Center News 7th grade parents: Choosing The Best Path will be presented through your child’s social studies

classes. The program encourages students to postpone sexual involvement until marriage. Permission

forms will be sent home during the month of October. Only sign and return the form if you do not want

your child to participate. The program is amazing and works best with parent feedback. The Alpha Alter-

native organization will have a pre program parent meeting at 5:00p.m. at HMS on October 10th. The pro-

gram will take place Oct 22nd - 24th and 29th - 31st.

Job shadowing: Our first group of 7th grade job shadowers from Ms. Kersey’s Career Choices class will go

out into the community on the 2nd of October. Parents, if you have any questions or concerns please con-

tact William Owen or Rosemary Lewis at the AHOY center. We will do our best to answer your questions.

Red Ribbon Week 2012: Oct 21 - 31, HMS will celebrate Red Ribbon Week. During this time we

will educate our students about drug abuse and the health effects related to drug use. On October 29th, 8th

graders will participate in a rollover simulation program and take part in activities while using impaired

goggles. The program is designed to deter students from riding with impaired drivers.

Step up to Leadership:

October 21st from 2:30 -3:10 HMS will offer its first leadership class to female students. 4-H will facilitate

the class and it will meet monthly based on the availability of the presenter. Parents, if you are interested in

your student participating please contact the AHOY Center at 270-887-7133.

We thank everyone for their help during this school year. The center is off to one of its best starts in

years. We wish you a safe and happy fall break and pray your student is experiencing success. If you

would like to volunteer or have questions concerning programming, please contact us at 270-887-7133.

The HMS math department is collecting “Box Tops

For Education”. In a grade level contest, the win-

ning grade will get to throw “pies” at the losing

grade math teacher at our K-Prep celebration in the

Spring. 8th grade already has a good start, so come

on 6th and 7th grade. Turn in your box tops to Mr. Przybylski for 6th

grade, Mrs. Penick for 7th grade, and Mr. Martin for 8th grade. We

hope to buy instructional material and hands-on supplies for the math

department.

In math we are in the middle of fractions and on our way to changing

fractions to decimals to percent. We will work with decimal operations

and hope to get to integers by the end of September. That will be a

struggle for some students, but hang in there. After Fall break, it is off

to ratios and proportions. The students are all registered at

mobymax.com and will be required to put some time into those lessons

each week. We may also work with Study Island as well.

Science is still science...doing science stuff. We’re wrapping up our

study on the scientific method and science process skills (which we will

use all year) and beginning our study of Sir Isaac Newton and his three

fabulous laws of motion. Please be sure your child is reviewing notes

and vocabulary EVERY night as this is the key to success in science.

In Social Studies the students are working really hard so far. We will

be starting our unit on Mesopotamia this week.

Keep reading those AR books to reach your goal this 9 weeks! You

will reap the reward of a good grade and a party in the gym.

Lastly, the grammar train is loaded down with standards about spelling,

sentence structures, misplaced modifiers, reflexive and intensive pro-

nouns, comma splices, semicolons, narrative compositions, as well as

action-packed daily bell ringers. Our notebooks are fully organized and

in use on every activity. We’re picking up our pace after MAPPS

Language Arts testing because our mph will be charted for the next six

months. Most of the time, we’ll be speeding, but don’t tell anybody.

8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip

Please sign up for the 8th grade trip by fall break if you plan to go

through Worldstrides.org with our trip ID 89649. All students and

parents who are going on the trip must turn in your security release

form to me before Fall Break. It is extremely important that I forward

this document to the agencies in hopes that we can tour the Capitol

Building, Pentagon, or other facilities that require a background

check. If you do not turn in this form, then you will be guaranteed not

to participate in that portion of the trip. If you did not attend the meet-

ing, please stop by room #108 and pick up a form. I'm looking forward

to another great trip to our nation’s capitol and to colonial Williams-

burg. Dena Stamper [email protected].
