Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as "Lou Gehrig's disease“
It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.
A-myo-trophic comes from Greek. "A" means no or lacking."Mio" refers to the muscles, and "Trophic" means feed:"No power to the muscles.“
"Lateral" identifies areas of the spinal cord where parts of nerve cells that signal and control muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it produces scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region.
When a muscle is not fed, it "atrophies" or wears.
