Welfare
• Well smooth, in a desirable way, in an efficient way
• Fare going, walking, journey, • Welfare walking smoothly, – To let the society walk in a smooth way
Social Problems
• Social problems as characteristic of human society• Human societies differ in needs and structure• In-built system of
– organization, – disorganization and – re-organization
• Social institutions to tackle the needs and problems– Family, – Education– Economy– Politics– Religion
• Out of these institutions, there were problems which have been arising in the world. To tackle such problems, Mosque, Madaris, NGOs and Church came forward so that the people can address the problems of individuals and groups.
• Whenever, there are social problems, the human society responds in the shape of social institutions. This is social welfare.
• Whenever there is a human society there will be problem of individuals, groups, or families and how the society addresses these problems is social welfare.
Definitions
• United Nations– Social welfare is a wide range of socially
sponsored activities and programmes directed towards community and individual’s well-being.
• Encyclopedia of Social Work– Social Welfare generally denotes the full range of
organized activities of voluntary and government agencies that seeks to prevent, alleviate, and contribute to the solution of recognized social problems, or to improve the well-being of individual, groups, or communities.
• Wayne Johnson– Social Welfare refers to socially organized activities
aimed at maintaining or improving human well-being.
• Britannica– Programmes designed to protect citizens from the
economic risks and insecurities of life. • Encarta– Programmes aim at helping people unable to support
themselves fully or earn a living.
• Organized activities
• Social Problems• By social problem we mean any undesirable
social situation which is threatening the smooth functioning of collective life.
• Most of the people realize that the situation is bad but they are themselves involved in it.
• Collective efforts are needed to remove that situation, to alleviate or prevent the situation.
Conclusion
• Social problems is the characteristics of human society. • Whenever there are social problems in human society,
the society responds in the shape of institutions. • The institutional response of the society towards social
problems is social welfare. • In this way, social welfare is a primary institution of
human society which fills the gaps in needs of those who are unable to meet their needs through other five (5) institutions.
