Solving EquationsWe use INVERSE operations to solve equations. What steps do we utilize?

1.Simplify the left and/or right sides of the equation (if necessary)

2.Use inverse operations to get the variable terms on the same side (if necessary)

3.Use inverse operations to isolate the variable.

Graphing LinesHow do we graph a line that is in slope-intercept format?

Let’s look at graphing y = 2x + 3

You have two approaches: use a t-chart OR use the slope and y-intercept.

Compliments of Purple Math.com

NOW, simply plots your points and connect them with a line.

Graphing LinesHow do we graph a line that is in slope-intercept format?

Let’s look at graphing y = 2x + 3

You have two approaches: use a t-chart OR use the slope and y-intercept.

Compliments of Purple Math.com

If you would rather use the slope-intercept format, that is fine too.Recall, slope-intercept format is y = mx + b.Thus, in this situation, m = 2, which is the slope, and b = 3, which is the y-intercept.

So, in order to graph the line, you start with a point on the y-axis at 3, or better yet, at (0,3). Then, you use the slope (rise/run) of 2 (or 2/1) to move up two & right one (or down two & left one). You repeat this pattern through the entire graph. Then, connect your points with a line.

Graphing LinesUsing intercepts instead.

This will typically happen in one of two ways.

ONE: you will be given the x- and y-intercept for a line. If this is the case, simply plot the x-intercept on the x-axis, plot the y-intercept on the y-axis, and then connect those two points with a line that goes all the way through the graph.

TWO: you will be given an equation of a line in Standard Form. If this is the case, it is often easiest to “find” the x- and y-intercepts by simply allowing the other variable to be zero and solving.

HOMEWORKYou are expected to do the EVEN problems for BOTH the Solving Equations WS and the Graphing Lines WS.

Make sure you clearly show your work AND be certain to mark your answer by circling or highlighting.

Remember, you want to earn a 4 by making sure every single problem gets completed to the best of your ability. It is NOT ok to leave a problem blank.

Also, remember we will have a TEST (Unit 0) on Thursday (THAT IS TOMORROW) that will look very much like the Preliminary Assessment from Monday.

CLOSINGVerify your understanding of today’s important concepts by completing the following problems. If you already have your Daily Activation/Closing spiral notebook, then please complete this work on the back of your Activation for today. If not, please use a new sheet of loose leaf paper. Put your name at the top, write down each problem, show your work, and clearly mark your answers.
