This yeaq four awards were presented to outstmd- ing entrepreneus, volun- teers and community or- ganizations. Ken and Dan Hamp- shire, owners and operators of Waterside Wireless in the RM of Lac du Bonnet, received the business of the year award from Lac du Bonnet MLA Wayne Ewasko. Waterside Wireless was establishedin 2006 to pre vide wireless high-speed lntemet to people within the local axea. With assistance from Community Futures Winnipeg Riveq Waterside Wirelss was able to access funding in order to estab- lish their business vmture. Starting witt just one tower in Lac du Bonnet tfiat trms- mitted to a tower at Sun- set Bay on the Lee fuver, the company has grcwn to 16 towers sewing a much larger geographic area. The Hampshiresbelieve that giving back to their community is important. They regularly contribute and donate to worthwhile comunity causessuch as the Food Bank, the Christ- mas Hamper progrm, the annual ice fishing derby md others. Winning the Self Em- ployment Awild ws Peter Kanellis, creator of Lawn Sharks, a lawn and yard care business operating in the RM of Springfield. Kanellis is a resident of Dugald and operates the business with his wife Kitty. Lam Sharks has en- joyed great success during their first year ofopemtion and is expanding slowly to new areas of Wimipeg. The Self Employment Award recognizes entrepre- nem who have participated in the Self Employment Program and who have demonstrated above av- erage effort and success during their year on the pro- gram. RM of Brokurhead Reeve Glen Dudeck was on hmd to roke the awild presentation. Lam Sharks has a very bright future md the suc- cess ofthe bminess can be attributed to the fact that Kanellis truly loves what he does. Trena Taylor may be relatively new to the area, but she has already made a huge impact. Nominated by Sport Manitoba East- mm Region, Taylor was the recipient ofthis year's Vol- unteer of the Yem award, presented by La Verendrye MLA Dennis Smook. Tbe Volunteer of the Year award is presented ammlly to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contribution made by a lo- cal resident to the economic development efforts of their commity or the region. Taylor *roed m chair- person of the very suc- cessful Polar Bear Dare event that wffi held in Lac du Bonnet this past Febru- ary. In June 2011, she ap- proachedthe EastmanKid- Sport Prcgrm md ageed to chair the event. Taylor insisted that it be held in Lac duBonnetto help bring tourism and exposure to the community. She volunteered her time and worked tirelessly for the next seven montls to ensureth€ success ofthe event by securing sponsor- ship, assisting with the event logo design, attmct- ing media exposure and setting up the jmp site. The Polar Bear Dare event encouraged people to raise funds by collecting pledges. A total of50jump- ers signed up and along with spomonhips obtained by Taylor, the event raised over $18,000 for Eastrnan Kidsport md attract€d over 300 people to the com- munity. This yem's recipient of the Commuity lnitiative Award was the Lrc du Bon- net and District Charitable Foundation. The Foundation is a comrnmity of donon work- ing to enhance the quality of life in Lac du Bonnet and smounding area. The Foundation works to raise funds through charitable donations and fundraising efforts. These firnds are pooled and a board of directors ovenees the resulting in- vestment portfolio. The endowed funds from the portfolio are then made available through a local gmnting process that sup- ports chritable activities in the area. The Lac du Bomet md District Chritable Founda- tion resulted from the vision of a number ofcommunity minded people, including Dr. Bob Rutherford. his son Mauri, Cliff Zarecki and Gus Wruck who recognized lie value a local fomdation could bring to the area. The foundation cunent- ly has endowment funds amounting to just over $200,000. "Community Futures Winnipeg River is dedi- cated to community eco- nomic development and our activiiies help to build capacity at the local and regional levels strengthen- ing the comunitic we live in," explained chairperson Roland Dandmeau. According to Dandene- au, dwing 201I nerly 800 business seruices wae pro- videdto 183 clients; CFWR business senices helped leverage $1.4 million for thet cfients; 25 businesses md 73 jobs were created as a result of CFWR busin€ss senices md lending activi- ties; and work progressed on 4l new and ongoing community economic de- v€lopment prcjects.
