Introduction
CommonSites is an international initiative that pro-
vides a unique web-based platorm or the heritage
sector. CommonSites is a business-to-business social
venture, designed to unite unders and project part-
ners to beneft the communities or which we work.
Through our network o Trusted Partners we ensure
sustainable research and heritage projects that meet
the highest ethical and proessional standards.
Our innovative, yet proven technology allows projects
to be easily brought online and updated rom the feld.
This interactive ormat engages both unders and
communities by allowing them to access up-to-date
reports or projects they are interested in. Our web-
based platorm increases the visibility o heritage proj-
ects or all who are involved, whether they be unders,
project partners, academic institutions or members o
local communities.
Our open-source sotware can easily be integrated
to any current web-page using widgets. Project part-
ners will have individualized and corporate-branded
project-pages. Through dedicated support and
advice, CommonSites will assist project partners in
putting their unding, reporting and monitoring pro-
cesses online as seamlessly, easily and as transpar-
ent as possible.
Through our open-source sotware partners can use
CommonSites to fnd and share knowledge, raise
unds and simpliy reporting back to donors and com-
munity members. Experts and students can donate
time to help projects they are interested in. Funders
can ollow projects online and search or novel support
opportunities rom our network o Trusted Partners.
All humans share a common ancestry. Over the past two hundred millennia we have evolved diverse cultural
traditions across the planet. Every year thousands o archaeologists and heritage management specialists travel
into the feld, producing knowledge about the past and conserving heritage around the world. However, members
o the various communities interested in heritage projects or those directly impacted by archaeological research
struggle to gain access to this knowledge and rarely beneft rom these research and conservation initiatives.

Problems we solve
Information Exchange:
Knowledge and know-how in the feld o
archaeology and heritage management
is available but is oten widely dis-
persed and hidden away in consultancy
reports and academic publications.
Both experts and communities are
oten unable to gain access to these
reports and keep up-to-date with the
wealth o inormation that is available.
Funding:
Heritage unding is currently limited in
its transparency and is not making ull
use o global public interest.
The heritage and research community
struggles to attract additional sources
o money. Funding or their projects is
very much a top-down approach with
either the unding bodies or heritage
specialists deciding where money is
spent. Currently there is no way or
local communities to organize and
attract unds or demand-driven
research projects directed at investigat-
ing their heritage.
Reporting and Visibility:
Projects struggle to share and visualize
results in an appealing way to unders
and the general public.
Projects are oten long in duration with
publications resulting only years ater
the initial data gathering phase. There
is no direct line o communication
between project managers, unders and
community members. Presently there
is no way to report on-going progress
and discoveries rom the feld. Funding
bodies and research institutions oten
wait months or years to see the results
o their investments.
Diversity of Approaches:
The heritage communities rom each
o the worlds major continents are
approaching the idea o heritage
management and unding schemes
rom a multitude o angles.
There is oten very little coordination o
eorts to ensure ethical management
principles and proessional approaches
to unding the research and conserva-
tion o sites around the world.
