The Asia-Pacific region has been achieving high economic growth for more than half a century since the end of the World War II, contributing to global economic growth. The Asia-Pacific has come to have strong influence on not only economic but also political and social aspects of the world. As a result of rapid economic growth, people’s income has increased remarkably in the Asia-Pacific. There is no doubt that this increase in income has led to material improvements in daily life. However, there still remain a number of serious problems, such as poverty, the income gap, the gender gap, environmental problems, territorial problems, and national security problems, all of which have strong impacts on our daily lives.

The Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS) is providing education and training to the students interested in and concerned with understanding and finding solutions to the problems noted above. The problems we face result from various factors involving a number of different academic disciplines. I would like to argue that the students need to develop highly competitive capability in one of many disciplines including economics, political science, international relations, history, sociology, and others. It is also important for us not only to realize but also to accept the diversity in the ways of understanding and dealing with the problems, because even the seemingly same problems are likely to have different historical and social backgrounds reflecting different regions and countries. At GSAPS, we offer a program that aims to achieve this objective, with many notable features, which will be explained below.

First, at GSAPS, you will find a bilingual learning environment. Almost all the lecture courses are offered both in English and Japanese. You can pursue your academic degree either in only English or only Japanese. However, you are encouraged to study both in English and Japanese.

Second, GSAPS is an intellectual community of more than 400 graduate students (approximately 300 MA students and 150 Ph.D. students) coming from more than 50 countries. Approximately 20% of the students are from Japan, while 80% are international students.

Third, a number of lecture courses are offered both in English and Japanese. These lecture courses fall within 3 categories: “Area Studies” in which you assess the situations in countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific; “International Relations” in which you analyze the inter-state relations and transnational relations of non-state actors such as private firms and NGOs; and “International Development and Policy Studies” in which you are challenged with how to tackle specific regional and global issues. In addition, there are several courses offered by lecturers who have experience in international cooperation, diplomacy, and journalism, which can help you translate the research into practice.

I truly hope that you join us to become a highly skilled talent of the future, who can solve or ameliorate the problems in the Asia-Pacific and other areas, through learning and conducting research at GSAPS.

Study AbroadIt was my ultimate desire to participate in the study abroad program to experience university life abroad, to exchange ideas with people of different nationalities, and expand my horizon. I aspired to challenge myself, both academically and socially, in an international environment. My master’s thesis pertained to Japan’s role in the Institute of Pacific Relations. Library at the University was one of the few libraries around the world that preserved archives related to the Institute. A wide range of courses offered at University of Hawaii facilitated the background knowledge of my research. I was also fortunate enough to be surrounded by students and professors who had similar research interests which fostered my studies. After studying abroad in Hawaii, I now have a clearer vision of my future: I hope to foster more understanding and friendships between people of different backgrounds around the world.

Study AbroadOn consideration, I have chosen the Department of International Relations (IR) of London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as destination of the study. Not only because of the first-class faculty group specialized in political science and information technology, the comprehensive training coursed for PhD students; but also for its well-known open and multicultural environment for researchers. The study in IR of LSE has helped me gain a better and clear understanding of processing the PhD research thanks to various faculties and colleagues for giving me lots of valuable suggestions on the thesis; they also helped expanding my vision of academic thoughts, providing the space for fruitful discussion and debate in conference, seminar, and so on. Abundant alumni activities and LSE Careers (an organization for helping students in career building) have helped me with my future plan in choosing jobs after the graduation.

CAREER

Career Development Resources C

CareerWhile engineering is still every 2nd Indian’s choice, I was perhaps way too adamant about choosing a different path. After doing my BA in Japanese at Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), I decided to study further, instead of getting a job. During my 2 years of Tokyo life, I learned so many things that I probably wouldn’t have experienced in India or any other country. I was studying at Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda, which attracts foreign students from all over the globe. There are people from countries here I wouldn’t have ever been curious of if I hadn’t met them at all. I am happy that I got to be in such an international environment and got to know so many people and their cultures.Japan has been full of knowledge and opportunities for me – not just at University but also outside. During my 2 years at Waseda, I also got to do an internship with a UN organization and later at a venture capital. The internship at the VC helped me get in touch with the IT startup industry of Japan which later fuelled my thesis. I got in touch with the startup community of Japan and met new people every day, learning something new every day!Life is of course full of ups and downs, and it’s not all green and bright always. I had my share of trying to understand and adjust. The most difficult of all was perhaps job hunting. It was a long road – after spending almost an entire year looking for a job, I found one. And guess what? A job as an engineer. No, it’s not because I have no options, it’s because I wanted to be an engineer. I loved programming back in high school but decided to not go with the flow because I wanted to do something different. So, my ideal job was being a web programmer at a Japanese web service. I finally got it and cannot wait to get started in April 2017! I graduated in September 2016 so there is some time before I start – but don’t worry, companies usually take care of your interim visas as well. Moreover, you can always ask the university for help – I have pestered them so much with questions, but they’ve always managed to answer with a smile. All in all, Japan has been wonderful to me. I got to study things I liked at University. And I get to do what I like for a living. I am sure I wouldn’t have been able to get back to programming so easily if I was in India.

InternshipDuring the spring break in 2017, I worked as an intern at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) for two months in Bangkok, Thailand. During my internship, I was assigned to work for the Business and Development Section of the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division. I engaged in organizing international conferences, drafting an annual report for my department and a regional trade treaty for ASEAN countries as well as updating and analyzing the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) data from various databases. This internship was a great opportunity for me to exercise the theoretical knowledge I have learned at GSAPS and experience how an international organization works in promoting regional cooperation and development. In addition, I met a lot of interns from all over the world with different backgrounds and scholars in different academic fields, which marvelously strengthened my social network and laid a significant foundation for my future career.

Q.1 Why did you choose GSAPS for your higher education? What made you decide to choose GSAPS?I was interested in sanitation problems in the world and I thought GSAPS is appropriate place to broaden my perspective and improve my expertise so as to conduct my specialized study. There are several reasons why I chose GSAPS. First, GSAPS is conducted their lectures in Japanese and English. It makes me to improve my language skills. Second, there are lots of international students from over the 50 countries which help me to expand my perspective. Third, all of the professors have diverse experiences and this is a great opportunity to improve my expertise. The final reason why I chose GSAPS is I can have lots of internship chances and it will be valuable step for my future career. For these reasons, I decided to choose GSAPS.

Q.2 What kind of things you gained at GSAPS became useful/ helpful for job hunting? The experience of studying with international students from all parts of the world was useful when I tried to find a job. I thought most of the companies were looking for an applicant who has an experience of cultural differences through the job hunting period. Actually, GSAPS has international students from over the 50 countries and I could experience cultural differences during the Master’s course in GSAPS. It makes me possible to take an interview confidently. Thanks for the experience in GSAPS, my job hunting was finished successfully and I’m going to work at the company which I really want.

Q.3 What is your treasure you have gained at GSAPS?There are two of treasures I have gained at GSAPS. First of all, I met lots of international students from all over the world and I experienced cultural differences. It makes me get rid of cultural stereotypes and change my mind to communicate with someone who isn’t the person from the country but an individual. Secondly, I studied many aspects of international relations such as law, education, economics, politics and development studies which I wasn’t interested in before the entrance into GSAPS. This makes me draw my interest to study all kinds of the international relations and improve my knowledge considerably.
