KENNETH F. BUNTING Honorary Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa (posthumous)

A 1970 graduate of Texas Christian University, Kenneth F. Bunting was a prize-winning reporter, editor, state bureau chief and newspaper executive for leading publications, among them the Los Angeles Times, the Fort Worth StarTelegram and the Seattle-Post Intelligencer.

Mr. Bunting worked his way to the top at the SeattlePost Intelligencer to become associate publisher and executive editor. During his tenure as executive editor, the newspaper and staff won more regional and national awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes, than at any other time in the newspaper's 146-year history. He later became executive director of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, working for a cause about which he was passionate.

A strong believer in journalism education, he taught at the university level, delivered addresses and lectures all over the country and served on the boards of visitors of three universities, including TCU.

He served on the boards of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Associated Press Managing Editors, Newspapers Features Council and the Washington Coalition for Open Government.

Mr. Bunting was recognized with a number of awards, including the Excellence in Journalism Award from the Washington State Association for Justice; the Spirit Award from Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle; and the Ethics Award from Texas Christian University, where he was an inaugural inductee of the TCU Journalism Hall of Excellence.

In addition to his professional skills, Mr. Bunting was known for wearing cowboy boots with business suits, a big laugh and his avid support of the Horned Frog football team.

VICTOR JOHN BOSCHINI, JR.

Victor]. Boschini, Jr., Texas Christian University's 10th chancellor, earned the bachelor's degree from Mount Union College, the master's degree from Bowling Green State University, and the doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana University. He has also received Honorary Doctorates from Lincoln University and The University of Mount Union. In 2005 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University College of Education. He holds the rank of professor of education and currently teaches one course per academic year for the College of Education. Most recently he taught a seminar class in the College of Education tided "Is Higher Education a Force for Negative or Positive Social Change in America?"

Dr. Boschini came to TCU after serving as president of Illinois State University, where he also previously served as vice president for student affairs and associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations. Prior to that he held administrative and teaching positions at Buder and Indiana universities.

Dr. Boschini is a member of the board of directors of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, an organization that works with Fulbright Scholars, and a member of the President's Council of The Washington Center, the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the United States. He recently completed serving a two-year term as president of the board of directors of Independent Colleges & Universities of Texas (ICUT). Previously he served a term as chair of the National Association of Independent Colleges & Universities (NAICU), headquartered in Washington, D .C.; that organization represents and advocates in Congress for the interests of private colleges and universities across the nation. His primary area of advocacy/interest in both groups has been maintaining accessibility for all students to higher education - particularly through federal and state supported financial aid programs.

Dr. Boschini sits on the board of the State Farm Company Mutual Funds, as well as on the boards of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Van Cliburn Foundation and the Moncrief Cancer Institute. His wife, Megan Boschini, is also involved in a variety of activities in the city of Fort Worth. Currently she serves as chair of the board of directors for the Gill Charity, Inc. They are both committed to ensuring that they, and TCU, are active participants in the Fort Worth community.

Dr. and Mrs. Boschini are members of the Addison & Randolph Clark Society at the Centurion level, members of the Chancellor's Council, and members of The TCU Frog Club. Both can be found at a variety of events across campus on any given day. They also spend a considerable amount of time traveling across the state and country, advocating for Texas Christian University. Both have participated in various Frog Camps for new students, including Frog Camp London, Frog Camp Roma, Frog Camp Seville and Casa Nueva Frog Camp. In the summer of 2012, Dr. Boschini was excited to be among the inaugural participants in the Frog Camp Washington, D.C., experience for incoming students.

Dr. and Mrs. Boschini have four children: TCU graduates Elizabeth Anne and Mary Catherine; Edward Mark, TCU Class of 2016, and Margaret Ellen, TCU Class of 2018.

CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLARS AMONG TODAY'S GRADUATES

Of Texas Christian University's 188 Chancellor's Scholars during the academic year 2014-15, we are honored to recognize thirty-three graduates today who held this distinction throughout their collegiate career. Selected as incoming freshmen, the students had an outstanding record of academic achievement in a college-prep curriculum, incredibly stellar standardized test scores (i.e., SAT/ACT), and a remarkably impressive list of co-curricular and community involvement as well as leadership in one of the most competitive applicant pools in TCU's history. This full-tuition award is the University's most prestigious academic scholarship. This program fosters relationships and close connections between and amongst the Scholars and the Chancellor along with a multitude of faculty and staff The University has had the grand fortune of supporting the students during their academic and personal developmental process, and we wish them only the best as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives.

THE FLAGS The twenty-nine flags displayed on the field represent the countries of our one hundred international

students who are receiving their diplomas today. The following countries are represented: Bolivia, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, Nepal, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Russian Federation, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

THE MACE The mace is a symbol of the strength of a university. In Medieval times, the mace was a weapon designed

to protect the dignitary in a procession. Academia borrowed that tradition from royalty designating it as a symbol of the power of a university and of its leader - power shared with the faculty. Maces, similar in appearance to ancestral weaponry, usually are constructed of wood or metal and may have symbols of the institution worked into the design. TCU's mace was created to commemorate the inauguration of Chancellor Michael R. Ferrari in 1999. TCU staff member, Robert Kramer, a master carver, made the shaft of the mace. It is fashioned from a wooden beam from the first building constructed at Add-Ran Male and Female College in Thorp Spring, Texas. The head of the rnace was created by international sculptor and TCU parent, Seppo Aarnos, and proudly bears the horned frog, adopted in 1897 as the University's mascot. An amethyst at the center of the head glows with the colors purple for royalty and white for purity.

TRADITION OF ACADEMIC DRESS The history of academic dress dates from at least the twelfth century, when long gowns were needed for

warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. In England, both Oxford and Cambridge made academic dress a matter of university surveillance, and both institutions regulated which colors and trim could be used by faculty and students. In May 1895, representatives from American institutions of higher learning met at Columbia University and formulated a "code of academic dress" which has generally been followed since that time, although some revisions were initiated in 1932 and in 1960.

The dress code recommended that gowns for the bachelor's degree should be worn closed and should have pointed sleeves. Gowns for the master's degree can be worn open or closed, but their sleeves are oblong in shape with open wrists. Gowns worn by those holding the doctoral degree also can be worn open or closed and feature bell shaped sleeves.

Gowns from different institutions vary in color, but most are black. Neither the bachelors' nor the masters' gowns feature trim, but doctoral gowns are faced down the front with black velvet and hold three bars of the same fabric across the sleeves. Sometimes these facings and sleeve-bars are velvet of the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, thus agreeing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the ·particular doctoral degree of the wearer.

Hoods are to be of the same color and material as the gowns and are lined with the official color(s) of the college or university conferring the degree. Bindings or edgings for the hoods display the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. Bachelors' hoods are three feet in length; masters' hoods are three and onehalf feet in length; doctoral hoods measure four feet in length.

For all academic purposes, including the trimmings of gowns, hoods, and tassels, the colors associated with the different academic fields are as follows:

Agriculture Arts, Letters, Humanities Commerce, Accountancy, Business Dentistry Economics Education Engineering Fine Arts, including Architecture Forestry Journalism Law Library Science Medicine Music Nursing Oratory (Speech) Pharmacy Philosophy Public Administration, including Foreign Service Public Health Science Social Work Theology Veterinary Science

THE FOUNDERS AND THEIR COLLEGE

One of the older institutions of higher learning in the Southwest, Texas Christian University traces its origin to the chaotic decade immediately following the Civil War. If longevity is a mark of distinction in our time, the beneficiaries include TCU.

The birthplace of the University, Thorp Spring (near Granbury in Hood County) now lies still and quiet save for the doings of nature. Then it was a community of a few families and served as both health resort and stagecoach stop. To grow the settlement bearing his name, Pleasant Thorp erected a "commodious building" with the hope of persuading some educator to turn it into a schoolhouse.

Forty miles away in Fort Worth, the Brothers Clark - Addison and Randolph -had launched an academy in 1869. Notwithstanding modest success, they concluded that their property, close to what came to be known as "Hell's Half-Acre," was no place for a character-building school. The firm expectation that the Texas and Pacific Railroad with its attendant vices soon would reach the town only added to their unease. As a consequence, they decided to start again and accepted Mr. Thorp's proposal.

Randolph moved to Thorp Spring in time to open the doors of their new school on the first Monday in September 1873. Honoring his commitment to Fort Worth patrons, Addison did not relocate until the next summer. Their father, Joseph Addison, followed a year later. A restless lawyer-surveyor and preacher in the Christian Church, he ably assisted his sons especially in business affairs.

The co-founders, Addison and Randolph, proved to be an exceptional twosome. Veterans of the Confederate Army but hardly firebrands, they dedicated themselves to rebuilding their homeland after the Civil War left it in a shambles. The level of trust and affection between them was remarkable. Different from each other, to be sure, Randolph was outgoing and venturesome; Addison, reserved and erudite. A student of Addison's, Colby D. Hall offered telling testimony. Referring to his teacher, he wrote: "You taught me homiletics and second-year Latin. Latin was not in your Department. You taught it because there was no other teacher available." Addison was a scholar. Indeed, the strengths of the Brothers were complementary. No wonder their professional relationship with Addison as president and Randolph as vice-president was long-lived.

The Clarks named their school AddRan Male and Female College in honor of Addison's first-born, AddRan, who died of diphtheria at the age of three. Beginning with thirteen pupils, enrollment increased to seventy-five by the close of the first session and passed two hundred in the fourth year. The co-founders and their father had good reason for encouragement.

But trouble surfaced. The business arrangement between the Clarks and Pleasant Thorp soured, and misunderstanding led to rupture. "Old Man Thorp" repossessed his building, and the Clarks proceeded to build their own. A three-story structure of forty by sixty feet, it was ready for use in the 1878 spring term.

Page 29: Commencement Program - Spring - 2015 (2)

To cover a portion of the construction costs, Addison and Randolph sold their houses in Fort Worth, and Randolph's wife, Emma parted with two of her treasured properties. AddRan was a family venture in every respect.

Thereafter enrollment turned up but peaked around four hundred fifty. The struggle to match income and expenditures intensified. The College had no endowment and faced gloomy tomorrows. What to do? Preacher-teachers in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Brothers turned their school over to the Church in 1889 and placed in control a self-perpetuating board of trustees. This transfer of assets and authority made sense because the Christian Churches in Texas had "endorsed" and "adopted" the private school at the outset.

A Christian college, AddRan bore no resemblance to today's Bible colleges. The stated purpose of the institution, according to the Charter, was to support and promote "literary and scientific education." The Clarks organized the curriculum into six areas of study: English, ancient languages, mathematics, physical sciences, mental and moral sciences, and social and civic history. The co-founders intended to educate the laity -women and men - as well as preachers. And they did.

To open the way for progress, Trustees moved the school to Waco in 1895 and then to Fort Worth in 1910. There AddRan, having been renamed Texas Christian University, claimed a significant place in American higher education. Addison and Randolph Clark stepped aside more than a century ago, but their work continues to unfold.
