Lantern Festival at RTA Confucius ClassroomMargarita Graičonoka International Lifelong Learning and Distance Learning Projects Coordinator at RTA Lifelong Education Centre

To celebrate the Lantern Festival, which is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month

in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, and introduce to the traditions of this festival, RTA Confucius Classroom held an event on 22 February 2019. Tianqi Huang, volunteer Chinese teacher from China, told the participants about the traditions of the Lantern Festival and revealed that traditionally the festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year Spring Festival period. The main activity of the event was the Chinese lantern workshop. The participants of the event admitted that the task was not easy and they had to make efforts to manage it, however, after a while, everyone had their own lantern with their own Chinese-style drawings and hieroglyphs. Later, everyone was offered to showcase their skills in popular Chinese street games and riddles, as well as participate in quizzes about China.Everyone is invited to participate

in events organized by the RTA Confucius Classroom. Chinese has been taught in Rezekne for several years. Chinese language classes are offered at different levels: for learners without previous Chinese language knowledge and with previous knowledge. Classes for learners with no previous knowledge are taught by a local teacher, but for other groups- by a teacher from China. Three months classes take place twice a week in the evenings in the Confucius Classroom at RTA, Atbrīvošanas aleja 90. Upon completion of the course, students receive a certificate issued by RTA Lifelong Education Centre.

RTA Public Relations Department

SILVIJA MEŽINSKA, director of the study field “Production and Processing”, director of the

study programme “Clothing design and technology”, students

and academic staff of the study programmes “Clothing design and technology” and “Design” (specialization “Fashion design”) realize research projects applying contemporary technologies in clothing design. These are cross-disciplinary studies for the application of laser technology (laser engraving, laser cutting) in textiles (Dir., Professor L.Lazov) and application of 3D printing in textile design (Dir., Docent I.Kangro).

Cross-disciplinary study is carried out in cooperation with the leading researchers of the Physical Processes and Laser Technologies Research Centre (lead by Dr.phys. P.Narica) and Metalworking and

Mechatronics Research Centre (lead by Associate Professor, Dr.sc.ing., A.Martinovs) taking advantage of the opportunities

offered by the laboratories of RTA.

Laser processing and 3D printing technologies are implemented in modern products with the help of A.Pacejs and E.Zaicevs, laboratory assistants of the research centres. Clothing design projects of the students Z.Kačkāne, N.Brokāne, S.Kārkliņa, and G.Salmane have been developed providing for laser cutting and 3D printing in clothing.

Latgale entrepreneurs “Technical Textiles” (Balvi) and others are also involved in cooperation between students and academic staff. Entrepreneurs provide fabric samples for testing, evaluate innovative technologies and support pilot studies, as well as plan their further implementation in textile products. At the request of undertakings, specific tasks are carried out within projects that facilitate the practical application of the study results. These are custom orders related to the laser treatment of textile materials and the use of 3D printing.

Rezekne Academy of Technologies is an active participant of the Erasmus+ programme. We welcome students from around the world. Meet some of them and get to know what they think of RTA!

Khrystyna, Mariia, Tetiana, Anastasiia, and Andrii are from Ukraine. They study biotechnology at Polonia University in Czestochow (Poland) and have come to Rezekne within the Erasmus+ programme.

“We are in Latvia for the first time and haven`t seen much so far, but we`re planning to explore Latvia a little bit more, as well as to visit Lithuania,” says Andrii. “Local students`

attitude is very good. Even in the dorms, everyone helps us with assignments, I like everything. Professors are also good,” he continues and the girls add, “We like that there are no language barriers in the communication with the professors. Although, we communicate mainly in English, they will also explain in Russian if necessary.”

The students particularly welcome co-curricular activities and events organized by RTA`s students. “You can both study and party!” they say.

“It`s really cold here in Rezekne!” everyone shudders, but at the same time the students confirm that they would recommend RTA to others because of their positive experience here.

Blessings NTHARA is from Malawi. He studies Computer Engineering at Pamukkale University in Turkey and has come to RTA within the Erasmus+ programme.

“Pamukkale University has a cooperation agreement with Rezekne Academy of Technologies, and I chose RTA, because you offer studies in English.

Since childhood, I`ve been interested in computers. My father is an electrical engineer and works as a network administrator, so I was introduced to computers at early age, because he used to bring computers home. At high school I was one of the best students at computer classes and decided to study computer engineering. I am planning to continue studies and pursue a master`s degree. As for the future, I would like to establish my own technologic

company in Malawi, so that I contribute to my home-country.

Most of my free time I spend on computers, listen to music, watch movies and series, but especially I like to hang out with my friends.

When it comes to Rezekne, I like everything and don`t have any complaints. When it was cold, it was a little bit difficult, but now it`s warmer and OK. People here are nice and helpful.

I would recommend Rezekne Academy of Technologies to students who want to pursue an undergraduate or a master`s degree in engineering and other sciences, because the academy has well experienced lecturers which are fluent in English and also technologically advanced equipment at the laboratories used for research and also to teach students.”

Book on multilingualism in the Baltic StatesRTA Public Relations Department

On 21 - 22 February, the International Scientific Conference “Word. Meaning. Dictionary” to commemorate the 146th anniversary of academician Jānis Endzelīns took place at the Latvian Academy of Sciences. During the event the book “Multilingualism in the Baltic States” edited by Sanita Lazdiņa, professor at Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA), and Heiko F. Marten, leading researcher at RTA Research Institute for Regional Studies, was presented.

This edited collection provides an overview of

linguistic diversity, societal discourses and interaction between majorities and minorities in the Baltic States. It presents a wide range of methods and research paradigms including folk linguistics, discourse analysis, narrative analyses, code alternation, ethnographic observations, language learning motivation, languages in education and language acquisition. Grouped thematically, its chapters examine regional varieties and minority languages (Latgalian, Võro, urban dialects in Lithuania, Polish in Lithuania); the integration of the Russian language and its speakers; and the role of international languages like English in Baltic societies. The

editors’ introductory and concluding chapters provide a comparative perspective that situates these issues within the particular history of the region and broader debates on language and nationalism at a time of both increased globalization and ethno-regionalism. This book will appeal in particular to students and scholars of multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language discourses and language policy, and provide a valuable resource for researchers focusing on Baltic States, Northern Europe and the post-Soviet world in the related fields of history, political science, sociology and anthropology.
