The day-flying Slender Scotch Burnet Moth is one of 6 species of Burnet moth all of which are endangered, 5 can be found in the British Isles and one that lives exclusively on the Isles of Mull, Ulva and Gometra. Coinciding with the year of the International Burnet Moth Conference on Mull in September 2014, this multifaceted project celebrates one of the island’s rarest and most stunning species of wildlife. Including sculpture, costume design plus a new fictionalised account of the moth, the project will observe in red and black the final stages of metamorphosis of the island’s Burnet larvae into moths, taking to the wing from mid-June. Visitors to the gallery can don one of 20 handmade woolen moth hoods, one of which will fire into the air her 5ft proboscis in commemoration of this extraordinary island icon. The exhibition draws from a myriad of references including contemporary fiction, new nature writing, superhero comics, and Disney animation plus real accounts from the entomological world including tales of wholesale caterpillar theft and cyanide poisoning.
