Did you know? The woodlands of the Isle of Mull represent a throwback in time tothe Mesolithic, when the first people settled on the island after thelast Ice Age (ca. 9,500 years ago). The early colonising Hazel treesprovided a staple in the diet of early hunter-gatherers on the islandand are a focus for unusually-patterned lichens today.

Mull’s woodlands are akin to a Celtic Rainforest. The clean, humidair provide perfect growing conditions for a huge variety of ferns, mosses and lichens, many of which are rare or unusual in theUnited Kingdom. A particular lichen, Sticta sylvatica, hides away onthe bark of deciduous trees on the Isle of Mull, only revealing itselfby its rather pungent odour. It is not called Stinky Sticta fornothing!

The Isle of Iona is home to a very rare migratory bird which has been inhistorical decline throughout Britain in the past 150 years. The Corncrakeis a skulking land rail that is much more often heard than seen. Malesarriving from their wintering quarters in South-east Africa in late April rasptheir characteristic ‘crek-crek’ call to attract a mate. Male Corncrakes callthroughout the day and night and each bird will rasp up to 1,000,000times during a single breeding season!

The machair and crofting land on Iona have changed very little, comparedto habitats that Corncrakes previously used on the mainland. This hasallowed these birds to retain a foothold on Iona in the face of widespreaddecline. Despite this, the Iona population fell to a low of only three callingmales in the early 1990’s, although the numbers of these iconic birdshave since risen on the island. Corncrake numbers tend to fluctuate fromyear to year. One reason for this is that Corncrakes are notoriously short-lived, with few birds reaching three years of age.

IONA ABBEY: Built on the siteof St Columba'smonastery, thepresent buildingdates in mostpart from about1200AD.The restorationwas completedin 1965, from
