T he businesses and organizations listed and featured in this special section were chosen by the read-

ers of Colorado Community Media. Your votes are what determined the 2012 Best of the Best winners.

is publication, our annual tribute to these winners, is a re ection of your tastes, a window into the communities we cover.

Some of the winners are perennial picks, like Romano’s Italian Restau-rant, which has locations in Littleton and Highlands Ranch and won over readers in those communities plus Englewood and Centennial. Roma-

no’s has been an area favorite since the 1960s.

But longevity is not a requirement in this contest. We also are recogniz-ing top newcomers. One such busi-ness is Parker’s winner in the “New Restaurant” category, elev. 5900. e restaurant industry is a particularly tough one, but this new business could be building the type of fan following needed to thrive for decades.

As you ip through these pages, you will notice that we couldn’t write about every winner, though they are all de-serving of such recognition. With doz-ens of categories per community, fea-

turing every top pick is an impossibil-ity. Consider what you nd in the fol-lowing pages a sampling.

To get the full avor, you will need to visit these businesses and organi-zations. en, when next year’s voting rolls around, you can again decide who is the Best of the Best.

Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone in the area who strives to provide top-notch service and qual-ity products. And thank you to our readers who took the time to vote for their favorites.

A dam Krier has been in the liquor business since 2004, but when the opportunity came up in 2010

to sell everything and put in an o er on the Bubbles Liquor store in Castle Rock, he couldn’t pass it up.

He and his partner opted to add “a ton” of inventory, improve on the selection, lower the prices and intro-duce a rewards program that was one

of the most aggressive of its kind. e program allows Krier to return more to his customers, he said.

“It’s just an approach I think is a more useful kind of a long-term ap-proach to make sure your existing customer base loves you as much as possible and tells everyone they know,” Krier said.

Two years later, his customer base loved him enough to name Bubbles

Liquor World the Best Liquor Store in

Castle Rock, an award Krier said re-

ects the Bubbles e ort to put the cus-

tomer rst.

“If there is a customer nearby and

they need you, drop what you’re do-

ing and take care of the customer,” he

said. “We emphasize customer ser-

vice. Growth takes care of itself.”

Bubbles Liquor World keeps customers in mind

Bubbles Liquor World owner Adam Krier bought the store in June 2010 when it was a bank-owned property and turned it around with added inventory, improved selection and lower prices. A customer-friendly ap-proach and rewards program helped push the store to a new level, earning it the Best of the Best award as Castle Rock’s Best Liquor Store.Photo by Rhonda Moore

W hen newlyweds Ted Man-zanares and Lisa Burmeis-ter opened the Orchard Day

Spa, they did it with a vision. For Burmeister, her vision was to make women beautiful. For Manzanares, his vision was to make his bride happy.

ree months after they opened their spa on Dacoro Lane, her client list of nearly 500 gifted the couple with a trio of Best of the Best awards, including the Best New Business in Castle Rock, and the couple had no problem when the honor came on the eve of their honeymoon.

Orchard Day Spa builds something beautiful

Orchard Day Spa owners and newlyweds Lisa Burmeister and Ted Manzanares opened the doors to their business three months before their Best of the Best win. Burmeister was previously an aesthetician at a local spa and had a client list of more than 400 Castle Rock customers. e Orchard Day Spa is the realization of a lifelong dream for Burmeister, who oers medical, cosmetic and laser treatments. Courtesy photo

e store had been a dream in the works for years, and when Burmeister opened the doors, she did it with no small air.

e Orchard Day Spa oers medical skin treatments from injectable llers, to Botox, medically based facials, epi-dermal leveling, chemical peels and laser treatments. Limelight treatments treat pigmentation, laser hair remov-al, skin tags, toenail fungus and teeth

whitening. More traditional treat-ments include eyelash extensions, air-brush makeup, waxing and facials.

“We feel very, very blessed to get the Best of the Best awards,” Burmeister said. “I love the fact that I have a loyal following of people that felt condent enough to vote for us. At this point now I feel like we need to live up to that ti-tle.”

brewer Jim Stinson in a decision that has netted Drabing and his sibling partners Mike and Di-ane Drabing “tons” of awards, including world beer cups, Great American Beer Festival Awards, Colorado State Fair awards and recognition as the 2012 Colorado Community Media Best Brew Pub in Castle Rock.

The Rockyard American Grill & Brewing Co. opened in April 1999 and was named with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Douglas Coun-ty jail, right down the street. I t was a magic carpet ride around the world that brought Joe and Carol Gi-van full circle to Castle Rock. e couple met while performing

at Houston’s Magic Island, a ve-star restaurant filled with rooms featur-ing a variety of magic acts. The two continued to run into each other over the years, with Joe Givan taking his award-winning illusions from Los An-geles to Japan and Carol Givan with her ash magic on cruise ships around the world.

When they nally decided they had enough with their “outrageous” phone bills, they chose his home state of Col-orado as a landing pad, and in 2003 opened the eatre of Dreams with a vision to bring top-notch magic acts to Castle Rock.

Their strength lies in their inter-national reputation to draw illusion-ists, mind readers and hypnotists from around the world for private perfor-mances that include wedding rehears-al dinners, reunions, corporate and birthday parties, as well as public per-

formances throughout the year.“Magic is the perfect ice-breaker,”

Carol Givan said. “You’re breaking re-ality and you’re seeing it live. Just the shock value and the amazement. e surprise takes them out of their every-day thinking. When one of their group members is involved in the show itself, that’s a lot of fun. ey remember it for-ever.”

A s with many successful restaurants, Santiago’s started with one great recipe in somebody’s mom’s kitchen.

In this case, the recipe was green chile and the mom was Rachel Morales, who roasted jalapenos on the grill, then gave them to her kids to peel by hand. One of those kids was Carmen Morales, who says it burned like crazy. Nevertheless, she grew up to open the rst Santiago’s under three guiding principles.

e food has to be fresh, because she doesn’t like leftovers. Customers need to be greeted with a friend-ly face, because you only get one chance to make them want to come back.

“ ird was a humble approach of not naming the restaurant after oneself, but to name it after a saint,” says Morales. “After all, not all new businesses are successful, and we would need all the help we could get.”

Clearly, it worked. Santiago’s has grown to more than 20 locations throughout the metro area and be-yond, from Englewood to Fort Morgan.

e key to Santiago’s burritos and other dishes, of course, is the green chile. It’s so popular now that they started shipping to out-of-state customers who can’t get enough, and it’s also available in grocery stores. Locals can get it for every meal – on huevos ranche-ros for breakfast, a Mexican hamburger for lunch and perhaps carne asada or pork chops for dinner.

“It’s a Santiago’s thing,” proclaims the website.

the menu items and intimate atmo-sphere intact. And the loyal follow-ing of Angie’s customers wouldn’t have it any other way.

 ey have come to count on the same spaghetti and meatballs, Ital-ian sausage sand-wiches, home-made pasta and f r e s h - b a k e d bread that have been coming out of Angie’s kitch-en for nearly 50 years.

The family recipes are the same as they were the day Mike Sr. opened his doors and the strength of the restaurants still lies in the lo-cal following that begins in the neig hborhoods that surround the restaurants.

“My brother has his location

in Littleton, he supports his family,

I support mine, we help mom and

dad out, it’s a big deal,” said Mike

McCaffrey Jr. “We make our own

past every day. We’re so happy.”

B ender Menders, Elbert Coun-ty’s premier collision repair and paint facility, is conveniently lo-

cated just east of town at Kiowa Street and CR-17. Bender Menders is a local home-grown business founded by Morrie and Lisa Christner.

Specializing in collision repair, hail damage repair, frame straight-ening, glass and window tinting and custom auto detailing, Bender Mend-ers is ready to get you back on the road.

All technicians are certified by

ASE and I-CAR and are committed to excellence.

Bender Menders tries to reduce, re-use and recycle as much as possible. Their 9,000-square-foot facility has many “green” features such as xeri-scaping and high-e ciency lighting and the use of a waterborne paint sys-tem to reduce the use of solvents.

Let Hertz Rental Car pick you up and get you on your way while repairs are being made.

Bender Menders has established great working relationships with most

major insurance companies. ey’ll work hard to ensure your complete satisfaction and o er a limited life-time warranty on workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle.

“My wife and I really take pride in being part of this community,” said Christner. “We know our success here comes from not only the communi-ty, but from the dedicated employees on our sta . We couldn’t do it without them.”

T his year, the certi cate for the Best of the Best barbecue place goes to Moe’s BBQ and Bowling

at 3295 S. Broadway.“We opened about 3½ years ago

and brought Dixie-style barbecue to the area,” manager Ian Matting-ly said. “Our barbecue is prepared by rubbing spices into the meat and slow-cooking it over the coals to en-hance the smoky taste.”

He said a house specialty is the pulled pork sandwich with marinat-ed coleslaw served on the bun with the meat, along with white Alabama barbecue sauce.

The menu also includes fried chicken, turkey, ribs and fried cat- sh. ere is a choice of a full meal or a sandwich. ere are popular South-

ern side dishes available like baked beans, coleslaw and banana pud-ding. Moe’s also o er larger quanti-ties like a whole turkey or slab of ribs, and the restaurant will do catering.

e Broadway location also o ers bowling, plus there is live music three nights a week. ere is full beverage service, and outdoor seating is avail-able during nice weather.

Often Moe’s has special events like the recent motorcycle show plus the upcoming craw sh boil.

Moe’s now has locations in Boul-der, Denver and Lakewood, plus there is now a mobile van.

Mattingly said the van joins the gathering of food trucks each Tues-day and ursday at Civic Center dur-ing the summer. e truck also goes to special events in the winter.

H ighlands Ranch Tattered Cover isn’t just a bookstore but a “com-munity hub,” says store manag-

er Margaret Shaheen.“We have meeting groups, book

clubs, journaling clubs, it’s really just a gathering place,” Shaheen said. “It’s a place where people can come to meet each other and to browse. We’ve got a lot of places where people can just sit down and read, browse through the books. … We also have author events probably every night in at least one of our stores.”

A Denver institution for more than 35 years, Tattered Cover opened its doors in Town Center in November 2004 and Shaheen and most of the store’s booksellers have been at the Ranch location since day one.

“We all just love to read, and love

putting books in hand,” Shaheen said, adding that when folks choose to shop with them, not only are they getting a unique experience but they are supporting an independent book-store, co ee shop and their commu-nity.

One of three Tattered Covers in the Denver area, Shaheen said each store is tailored to its neighborhood, and that in addition to its broad selec-tion of titles, the store on Dorchester is known for having a great children’s section, story times and different kids’ events.

The store is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9-6 on Sunday. e cafe, which prides itself on selling local co ee and pastries, opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and at 8 a.m. on the weekends.

D r. Aaron Casselman is so well-known for hav-ing his patients’ backs that he has been vot-ed Best of the Best ve years in a row when it

comes to xing them. In businesses since 2006, the man behind Pin-

nacle Chiropractic on Wildcat Reserve Parkway considers Pinnacle’s non-traditional approach as the reason why his clients keep putting up the votes at the highest clip in town.

To Casselman, being a chiropractor is all about xing the problem that causes the pain and doing away with that pain for good.

“ e traditional approach has a lot to do with symptom management. We focus more on spi-nal rehabilitation,” he said. “So, instead of just the treating the symptoms, we try to correct the un-derlying problems.”

It’s that same philosophy that has led to Cassleman’s other busi-ness, Ideal Weight Loss, to also capture Best of the Best. Operated out of the same o ce and run by his wife, Megan, the medically-managed weight loss program teaches successfully keeping the weight o and maintaining an optimal weight.

W ell aware going to the dentist is something most people don’t look forward to, Dr. Tyler Twiss does what he can to make the experi-

ence a comfortable and relaxing one. Whatever he is doing seems to be working.Having been voted Best of the Best four times

since opening his practice in Highlands Ranch in 2006, the Temple University Dental School graduate said he and his sta pride themselves on treating pa-tients like family.

“I think we provide a good, comfortable, safe en-vironment to be in,” he said. “We’ve invested a lot of money in the latest technology to provide the best in care for our patients and with that we can save them time and visits to the dentist.”

Raised in Oklahoma, Twiss is happy not just to have a practice in the Ranch, but to call it home as well.

“I like the environment,” he said. “ ere are a lot of good, friendly neighborhoods; my children go to school here … It’s a good place to raise a family.”

Whether at work or home, Twiss has family on the mind. When entering the o ce, one is greeted by friendly sta at the desk, o ered something to drink and made sure they are comfortable from the word go.

booming.

Having started as a one-woman show with a little

help from her husband, Jay, she now has a part-time

sta of three to help keep animals happy all over the

In addition to in-home boarding, where visiting

Jessie, 4 Pawz Sake takes its business on the road 24/7.

Services include pet sitting at the client’s home;

daily or periodic walks; a full-service pet taxi to take

and optional return traveler errands such as stocking

“ e whole basis for why I started this business

was how I would want my pets to be treated if I went

L ittleton Adventist Hospital’s mis-sion is to see and treat each per-son as a child of God and to strive

for whole-person care by considering the needs of the mind, body and spirit.

“Littleton Adventist Hospital is much more than a hospital,” says Rhonda Ward, chief nursing o cer and vice president of patient care, a Littleton resident who has worked there 10 years. “Beyond o ering com-passionate expert health care, we continue to expand our services. Our neurosurgeons o er deep brain stim-ulation for Parkinson’s patients, our

cancer-care program o ers compre-hensive cancer treatments and our NICU continues to be one of the best in the state of Colorado. Most impor-tantly, it is about our team – I hear each and every day about how caring and thoughtful our sta is in the treat-ment of our patients.”

Littleton’s only hospital offers a full range of services, from its birth center to stroke care, from a children’s after-hours center to a sleep-disorder center. With a bevy of awards and ac-colades under its belt, the hospital is home to a Level 3B neonatal inten-sive-care center, a Level 2 trauma cen-

ter and a nationally accredited breast-care center.

It is a true community partner, as well, participating in programs like Project CURE, which sends medi-cal supplies to where they’re needed; Adventist Community Services Lift, which supports people in need; and Prayer Shawls/Care Shawls, which of-fers shawls knitted by volunteers to patients and families.

“I am very proud that we o er com-plex medicine but in a tremendously compassionate culture that has been created at Littleton Adventist Hospi-tal,” said Ward.

Neil and Ellie Romano opened the original location on Windermere Street in 1967, welcoming neighbors and friends to enjoy authentic Italian recipes shared with them by Grandpa Giovanni, a pushcart vendor in New York City.

Since then, the Romanos’ chil-dren have carried on the legacy, even opening a location in Highlands Ranch.

“ e Littleton location is special because it has been a part of the Lit-tleton community for so long,” says the Romanos’ daughter, Sue Cal-houn. “I try to imagine Littleton in 1967, 1977, 1987 ... so much has hap-pened during our years here. Chil-dren grew up with Romano’s and now bring their own young families in for

dinner. I think that’s pretty special.”Whether in the mood for spaghet-

ti with clams, baked lasagna, chicken parmesan or just a slice and a salad, diners will enjoy the Romanos’ atten-tion to detail and authenticity – fresh ingredients, homemade sauces and meatballs, simply crafted but deli-cious salad. Of course there are Ital-ian sodas and tiramisu for the sweet of tooth.

“Delicious food does not come easily and requires each day that we make sure our quality and freshness exceed our customer’s expectations,” said Calhoun. “Our father, Neil Ro-mano, still keeps a very strict eye on each recipe to ensure that we live up to the quality and standards that he set so long ago.”

Swenson has more than 15 years of legal experience. Prior to starting her own practice, she was a criminal-jus-tice professor at Arapahoe Community College. She had a lot of knowledge to pass on to her students, having been an assistant district attorney both in Colo-rado’s 18th Judicial District and Arizo-na’s Pima County.

But then she was drawn back to her real passion: victims’ rights. As a pros-ecutor, she was responsible not only for holding people accountable to the law, but also to achieving justice for victims. During that time, she says, is when she discovered how often the rights of un-documented residents are minimized

or overlooked altogether. She’s in close contact with the im-

migration-services center at Bemis Library, and occasionally o ers free seminars there on topics such as the DREAM Act, which would defer depor-tation for children who were brought here illegally if they go to college or the military.

Today, Swenson’s goal is to set an example to various governmental agencies she works with that deal with immigration.

“I want to get them to see a little bit more that undocumented non-citizens are not necessarily a threat to public safety,” she said.

Immigration attorney Christine Swenson has the experience to help those who are sometimes

least able to find help when they need it most.

“I am trying in my own small way and in my own small corner of a very big, tangly, purple state to give people a voice,” she said.

W e want to be known as the best car wash, not as the biggest car wash,” says Keith Taylor,

owner of Jazz Car Wash, 6095 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.

Taylor was a member of corporate America until 2007, when he realized he would be happier doing something he loved.

“I’ve always been sort of a clean-car freak,” he said. “I used to wash my own car in the driveway every Satur-day morning for rest and relaxation.”

Today, he can ask one of his 35 em-ployees to do it for him when they’re not busy with the constant stream of customers who visit to get their car ba-bied, shop in the boutique (run by Tay-lor’s wife, Lisa), buy some fancy pick-les or a fountain drink or just kick back on a couch in front of a big-screen TV while watching the kids play in the toy

room.“ ey know their cars are going

to be treated gently and cleaned well, and they get a chance to relax,” said Taylor.

He says it’s the little things Jazz does that keeps the customers coming back – special towels for windows that get washed separately, environmen-tally safe chemicals, rain checks, free co ee, water and wi- .

Taylor’s philosophy focuses on customer service, and to him that means happy employees.

“We ensure the team is well cared for and motivated to do a great job for our customers, and that the custom-er comes rst,” he said. “If my team is empowered to do a great job for the customer each and every time, then they will keep coming back.”

T he two categories for which Lone Tree Veterinary Med-ical Center won Best of the

Best are tightly tied. e o ce took top honors for veterinary medicine and pet boarding. For the pets who stay there, that connection can be vital.

“What really sets us apart as a facility as a whole is we board animals and are a functioning hospital,” boarding and build-ing facilities manager Logan Walter said. “So we catch things before they get bad. We save lives.”

The 10-year-old center al-so is distinguished by its dog rescue efforts. Working with

a Colorado group called Mill Dog Rescue, the Lone Tree vet-erinary clinic treats abused and neglected dogs at no cost, then nds them new homes.

e facility also o ers obedi-ence training, grooming, thera-peutic canine swimming and a full range of medical services including internal medicine, dentistry, dermatology, ortho-pedics, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, canine repro-duction, laparoscopy and acu-puncture.

Five veterinarians work at the hospital, along with a host of nurses, assistants, pet care technicians, groomers and re-ceptionists.

W hole Health Center in Lone Tree does a lot of things right. at’s why it racked up mul-

tiple Best of Best awards for its mind, body and spirit approach to health.

The office off Yosemite Street is a labyrinth of halls leading to thera-peutic rooms, all dedicated to natural treatment. Healing begins the mo-ment a patient walks in the door. e reception room is awash in sooth-ing, low light, and the gentle trick-ling sound of a water fountain. Tropi-cal sh swim calmly in a corner tank, and the fragrance of therapeutic oils permeates the air.

“We consider this a haven, an op-portunity to get away from the world,” o ce manager Marcy Gardner said. “We want people to just come here and feel the peace and serenity and kind of decompress from the world.”

at sense of tranquility follows patients into the treatment rooms, where therapists address health is-sues extending from head to toe. Ser-vices include psychotherapy, light and energy therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, nutrition counseling and colon hydrotherapy. And that’s only a sampling.

The duo has been so consumed with making sure the upstart meets expectations, that they were unaware of the voting for the best new restau-rant. Regardless, Esper says the early recognition is encouraging.

“It shows good support by Parker,” he said. “We know to a certain extent the feedback from guests and espe-cially our regulars, but it’s nice to have that validated publicly.”

The following has come largely from elev. 5900’s succulent entrees, including mouth-watering steaks, but customers have likely noticed the freshness of the accompanying sides. Esper says with the Taylor Produce

stand just outside its doors, they have a constant supply of just-picked fruits and vegetables. ey also take advan-tage of goods from the Parker Farm-ers Market that bustles out front every Sunday.

Esper is organizing an event he wants to introduce this fall called “Sunday, Bloody Mary Sunday,” which will test local bartenders’ skills when making the popular drink. He doesn’t worry about driving customers to competitors because every restaurant has its niche and “the more options you have, the better choices you can make.”

W hen out-of-towners ask

longtime Parker resi-

dents which Asian res-

taurant is the best in town, there

is one common answer.

Indochine, which specializ-

es in ai and Vietnamese cui-

sines, has been a popular eat-

ery in Parker for nearly 10 years.

A few-blocks move from its

original home near Parker and

Mainstreet to the Parker Station

building in the downtown dis-

trict three years ago did nothing

to stop the crowds from coming

in. e move increased capacity

from 28 to 100-plus, including

outside seating.

It’s the second time that In-

dochine has been named as the

top Asian restaurant in Parker

as part of Colorado Communi-

ty Media’s Best of the Best con-

test. Yume Tran, who owns In-

dochine with her husband, Je ,

says the honor “means a lot to us

since that means that we are do-

ing something right to service

the Parker community.”

It’s not only the food – from

best-sellers like the amed beef

cubes and Vietnamese noodle

bowl, to drunken noodles and

green curry – but the elegant at-

mosphere and courteous cus-

tomer service keep regular cus-

tomers owing through.

“We hope we were voted be-

cause our guests see and appre-

ciate that each and every day,

we continue to give our best to

create and service the healthi-

est meals,” Tran said.

Indochine’s website notes

that the meals are prepared

with the same “love and utmost

care” that the chefs use for their

own family’s meals at home.

Indochine is widespread favorite

something that reso-nates with everyone who passes through the front door.

e rst-time Best of the Best winner for acu-puncture has grown by leaps and bounds. The number of patients has doubled in the last year, with an average of 150 people stopping by every week. Dr. Ryan Hatch, who works with Michelle Wozniak, D.C., and cer-tified massage thera-pist Jake Freedle, was “thrilled” and “attered” to hear about the Best of the Best honor.

“This little practice here has come a long way

in less than two years, so we were really happy to hear it,” Hatch said.

Of course, acupunc-ture services make up just a small slice of the holistic pie at Hatch Chi-ropractic and Wellness. Massage, chiropractic adjustments, laser treat-ments and sports ther-apies are also popular. Hatch says he has always believed in the heal-ing power of the human body. Practitioners of Western medicine, after reading up on the exten-sive research of recent years, have embraced the benefits of alterna-tive treatments like acu-puncture.

H ilary Casselberry turned a child-hood hobby into a career that has made her a lot of friends.

Her quirky, charming personality ts in well with the sweet treats that line the display cases at Posh Pastries, a small, o -the-beaten-path shop on the southwest corner of South Parker Road and Plaza Drive.

Casselberry, a baker who began honing her craft at age 10, takes her trade so seriously that she went to Par-

is to study French pastries. She insists on making everything from scratch. Melt-in-your-mouth cupcakes and delectable meat pies are a big draw, but Casselberry’s friendly, welcoming demeanor has a lot to do with the suc-cess of Posh Pastries, which notched its fth turn as Parker’s top bakery as voted by Colorado Community Media readers.

Sitting at one of the shop’s tables on a recent Tuesday, she talks about the regular customers she has come

to know and love. Moments later, as if on cue, a woman with two children in tow walks in, points to Casselberry and pipes into the conversation: “She rocks!”

Posh Pastries, which has been in Parker for almost seven years, has built a solid reputation throughout the region as one of the most reliable establishments from which to order a wedding cake. In the throes of the summer wedding season, Casselber-
