Counsellor’s Corner

In November our Grade 9 students had Safe Workers training in preparation for

Take Your Kids to Work Day. This event, held annually in November across

Canada, allows our students to enjoy a bit of career exploration. Many students

reported having an excellent day and some even enjoyed a night shift! Thank

you parents, relatives and community for supporting our students in this

experience! Marilyn Brick, our divisional Career Development Co-ordinator,

introduced our grade 9 classes to an online site for career preparation called

Xello. Every student in our school has access to the program here and at home.

They have their user name and have a personal password. We encourage parents

to login with their child to see what the program offers to our students. The link

is: https://xello.world/en/index.html

The student body also attended a TADD (Teens Against Distracted Driving)

presentation with special guest speaker Cheryl Dupuis. Cheryl shared with

students the tragic story of the loss of her daughter Danae to drunk driving.

Cheryl’s message was to the point, before going out have a plan, if the plan falls

through and you need a safe ride, call the people you trust the most! It is

important for young adults to know what to do if they are confronted with the

decision of getting behind the wheel or be a passenger with someone who is

under the influence. Talk with your children about what alternatives they have if

they do not or cannot get home in the way they had intended. We want our kids’

home safe!

Our student Mentor group participated in a Canadian Red Cross training session

this November and will have the opportunity to put their new skills to the test in

the New Year! They will be talking to students about bullying and healthy

relationships. The students are excited to present to their peers and our partner

schools.

GRADS…A reminder to visit the CLC website often for new scholarships and

sign up for our Remind Grad 2019 if you have not done so already. Check out

Scholartree as well at https://scholartree.ca/. Starting in December, grade 12

students who have submitted university applications may start to receive

conditional offers. Students should check their emails often for the next step

instructions.

The CLC Scorpions Varsity Girls Volleyball 2018 Season

The volleyball season started out with many new faces, including the

coach and an assistant coach. The varsity team only had two returning players, only one of which was in grade 12. The young team had a lot of talent and positive chemistry going into the season.

Three years ago, CLC decided to join the Kilcona Peguis Athletic Conference. This year KPAC had two tiers for the varsity girls and we were in the second tier along with five other teams. We played well in the league and saw many wins and a few losses but those losses taught us many lessons, and helped us to improve our game.

Our first tournament was at Kildonan East Collegiate. We won some key games against a triple A school and ended in the finals against the home team. We placed second and got to take home a small trophy.

Our next tournament was at Ste. Anne Collegiate, which was another six-team tournament. The team had a large break in-between games, so we went to Smitty’s in Steinbach for a team lunch, which gave the team energy and helped reinforce the positive vibes. We faced off against more triple A schools this time, including St. Norbert who we lost to in the round robin in very close sets, but then came back to beat in playoffs. We lost in the finals, in a very close second set (24-26), which earned us a second place plaque.

We worked hard in practices to become a competitive team and it showed by the time of our home tournament at CLC. We placed first in our pool in the round robin, and won in the third set in the semi-finals. We handed out two team awards, one to Jocelyn C. for “fastest to the ball” and another one to Shaelyn M. for “best tipper”. Unfortunately, we lost in the finals against Calvin Christian Collegiate; however, one of our players, Hannah B., got one of the game’s MVP.

The next week, we played a small four-team tournament at Springfield Collegiate Institute, which was tough. We faced off against teams that could hit hard and learned from that tournament that we need to improve our defense. For the next few weeks in practice we worked on our blocking and tip coverage. By our out of town tournament results we thought we were ready.

The Spartan Dig was the biggest tournament CLC has entered in 4 years. It consisted of 40 varsity girl teams from across the province. We placed second in our pool on the first day, winning an important game against Landmark which decided our seeding for south zones later that month. The next day we played in the A side playoff bracket, we had many tough losses but finished in the top 16 teams out of 40. During the weekend, we ate many meals together and went out for a nice supper, where all the ladies dressed up and looked very lovely. Even though the volleyball was not the outcome we had hoped for, spending time together was the best part of the tournament.

The end of the season had mixed results. We placed 4th out of 6 teams in KPAC. We won our first game in south zones against Ste. Anne but lost against Niverville. We applied for a wildcard but were unsuccessful. But the hardest part about the end of the season was saying good bye to our seniors. Jocelyn and Tessa will graduate at the end of the school year and so their time playing volleyball as a Scorpion is over. For their final home game they were presented with a bouquet and some CLC gear, to let them know how much they meant to us. They were strong positive leaders on the team, and we hope that they continue to have love for the sport as they leave our court and go play on another.

Reading Apprenticeship at CLC

Students in High School have the difficult task of moving from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. Students must read more difficult texts in all the different subject areas. They need to be able to think and question what they are reading in order to understand. To do this, they have to use strategies that help them to think critically about the text they are reading.

As part of our professional learning, teachers at CLC have been

learning about Reading Apprenticeship. Reading Apprenticeship (RA) is a philosophy of teaching that supports students in learning how to think critically and to become independent readers. RA focuses on improving students’ ability to read, to write about, and talk about texts in all the subject areas.

In an RA classroom, there is a focus on comprehension, student

collaboration, and independence. To improve student comprehension, we are working to create classrooms where reading that happens ‘in students’ heads’ is more visible. Teachers are teaching students strategies to help them understand what they are reading more deeply. To do this, teachers first model their own thinking while reading to students out loud. You might see a teacher using a document camera annotating while reading a text aloud to show their thinking. Some of these thinking strategies may be: asking questions, making connections, or predicting. Next, students have opportunities to practice in partners and small groups before continuing the reading independently.

In an RA classroom, you will see students engaged in discussions

helping each other with problem solving and understanding their learning. Teachers have created classrooms where students value and respect others in order to learn from each other and make sense of text together. This collaboration supports students to take risks, share knowledge and confusions, and work together to solve comprehension problems.

Lastly, an RA classroom works hard to build students’ independence.

Through modeling of teachers’ own thinking, guiding students through their own thinking strategies, and providing opportunities to learn from each other through discussions, students are becoming more independent in understanding what they are reading more deeply. As well, they are learning what to do when they don’t understand, therefore, becoming more confident, critical, independent readers and thinkers.
