All students must pass the California High School Exit Exam and all subject requirements to receive a high school diploma.

• There are two parts, Math and English• Can pass each part separately (score of 350)• All students must pass this exam and all courses

required for graduation to earn a diploma

9th grade suggested courses and activities Take challenging courses (including honors

classes) that satisfy a-g requirements including algebra 1 or geometry, college prep English and a language other than English

Aim for A’s and B’s in all of your classes. Focus on your class work and homework to develop study skills you will need to succeed in college

Join clubs, play sports and volunteer

10th grade suggested courses and activities Take Geometry or Algebra 2, college prep English

and a language other than English. Consider taking honors level courses

Try to earn A and B grades in all of your classes. Studying hard in high school will help prepare you for college coursework

Focus on your class work and your homework to develop the study skills you will need to succeed in college

Sign up for and take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) offered in October. This test will help you guage your strengths and weaknesses

11th grade suggested courses and activities Take advanced math and college prep English. Take honors and

AP level courses Meet with counselor to make sure you are on track and taking the

college preparatory courses to meet a-g college admissions Visit college campuses. Take a tour and listen to presentations

about academic programs, admission requirements and financial aid. Bring a copy of your high school transcript

Maintain A and B grades. This is especially important during the junior year.

In October take the PSAT. Use the results to see where you are strong and where you need to improve to be ready for college

Spring semester register to take SAT or ACT Take the California Standards Test (CST) and answer the

supplemental items which comprise the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP)

campuses November 1st through November 30th: Apply to UC

Financial AidAvailable from the federal government,

states, colleges and private sources Grants are money you don’t have to repay,

usually based on financial need. Scholarships are free money for college, usually

based on study or merit, such as: good grades, high test scores, or special talents, etc.

Loans are money you borrow that must be repaid with interest.

Work-study are student employment opportunities in which you earn money in a job on or off campus.

Private Colleges and Universities There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the United

States There are 76 Private/Independent colleges in California Make sure you research individual requirements for each

college Visit www.commonapp.org for additional information Counselors can not submit common app electronically.

Please provide counselor with: - a completed hard copy of the school report, mid-year

report and final report - a request for letter of recommendation form filled out.

Requests for letters require a two week notice to counselor - a list of private colleges you are applying to, addresses

and their application deadlines

Historically Black Colleges or University (HBCUs) There are 100 historically black colleges in the

Some HBCUs have minimum GPA and SAT requirements that are reachable for most students.

NCAA Eligibility Center Any students interested in playing a Division I or

II sport in college needs to register with the Eligibility Center at the beginning of their junior year. Register at www.eligibilitycenter.org

Students should have their SAT and/or ACT scores sent to the Eligibility Center
