DR. CAYETANO &

MRS. YOLANDA BARRERA

This year we will be honoring Dr. Cayetano and Mrs. Yolanda Barrera for contributing and enriching the community of the Rio Grande Valley along with their lifetime of service to IMAS. In its 37th anniversary, Collage is one of the longest running fundraisers and most eagerly anticipated social events of the year. All funds raised at Collage enable the museum to continue creating an inspirational legacy by providing life enhancing art and science exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events serving to inspire our visitors to “"Think. Discover. Experience. Create." IMAS has delighted visitors by featuring the finest national and international art and science exhibitions while providing exceptionally engaging educational programs since its establishment in 1967. IMAS is a Smithsonian Affiliated museum and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). We are proud to announce we have also become a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers. This partnership allows IMAS's“ 900+ members to visit over 250 national and international museums with free general admission. We are expanding our mission so we can inspire our visitors to Think, Discover, Experience, and Create through science, technology, engineering, art and math through hands-on programs, cultural events, exhibitions, and much more. Over 75,000 visitors enjoyed IMAS this past year with half consisting of school children. We are continuing our community engagement with our Operation Imagination, our new Outreach program and our continued commitment to our satellite spaces, local artist programs, and the many quality programs and events offered throughout the year. We seek your support to further our mission of providing excellent world-class art and science exhibitions, science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) programming and cultural events to the Rio Grande Valley that challenge our audience to Think, Discover, Experience, and Create the world around them and to inspire and motivate our community.

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) wishes to warmly extend the opportunity to become a sponsor for “COLLAGE 2015: A LEGACY OF SERVICE

A LEGACY OF SERVICE:DR. CAYETANO & MRS. YOLANDA BARRERACOLLAGE 2015 HONOREES

Cayetano Barrera and Yolanda de la Garza met in the summer of 1959, married 3 years later, and have been married for 53 years. After college, marriage, medical school, and the army, The Barreras moved back to the Rio Grande Valley and have resided in McAllen ever since. They have three children-Melissa (married John Lackey), Marcus (married to Velma Tober), and Victoria (married to Justin Cappadona)-and are the proud grandparents of eight grandsons and one granddaughter. They have tirelessly instilled in their family the same values they learned from their parents: the importance of family, the power of education, and the duty of service.

Mrs. Yolanda Barrera was born in the city of Edinburg, Texas. From an early age her love of music shaped her studies and her early community involvement. Taught by a Juilliard graduate, Mrs. Barrera spent her Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings as the official pianist for El Buen Pastor Methodist Church. As a music major, she formed part of the

Pan American College's choir, symphony, and marching band as a percussionist. As a mother of three young children in the late 1960s, she saw the growing need to provide her family quality of life, which would then transcend into her community.

Mrs. Barrera has served as President of the Hidalgo-Starr County Medical Auxiliary, the McAllen Child Study Club, the International Women“'s Board, and the Pan American Round Table at McAllen. She has been a board member of the Salvation Army since 1985 and a Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church from 1972-1989. She has received the American Heart Association“'s Heart of Gold Community Leadership Award (1994), the City of Palms' “ McAllen Outstanding Woman of the Year (1996), AVANCE RGV's Mother of the Year (1999), the International Women“'s Board“'s Excellence in Leadership Award (2009), and the Junior League of McAllen's Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award (2011).

She has been involved with the McAllen International Museum (MIM), now known as IMAS, since the 1970s in various capacities like Chairman of the MIM Expo Arts & Craft Show (1986-88), member of the Board of Trustees, Charter Member and President of the IMAS Guild, and Chair of the Spring Luncheon-Style Show.

Dr. Cayetano Barrera was born and raised in Mission, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University in 1959, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southwestern Medical School in 1963. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in Viet Nam with the 12th Evacuation Hospital, the 7th M.A.S.H. Hospital, and the 1st Infantry Division. Besides practicing medicine for 43 years, Dr. Barrera has served his community as President of the following organizations: McAllen Economic Development Corporation, Texas Academy of Family Physicians (Valley Chapter), Hidalgo-Starr Counties Medical Society, Rio Grande Boy Scout Council, and the UTPA's Rio Grande Valley Historical Collection.

He has received the International Women' “s Board“'s Excellence in Leadership Award, Texas Doctor of the Year (2005), the Lulac Foundation“'s Citizen’'s Award, the Rio Grande Boy Scout Council's Silver Beaver Award and Paisano Award. Additionally, between 2000-2012 Dr. Barrera served as the President of the Tejano Monument, Inc. Board, where he helped to raise funds for the construction of the Tejano Monument in front of the Texas Capitol in Austin.

Dr. Barrera served as the museum“'s Chair from 1973-1974. During his tenure at IMAS, he paved the way for the museum“'s first expansion and move to its current location. His passion for education and history has left a literal imprint on the museum“'s architecture through the personal donation of 4 carved corbles originating from a Spanish Colonial Church in Mier, Tamaulipas, built between 1781-1790. The corbles can be found under the beams of the museum“'s Atrium.

Because of this couple“'s undying commitment to serve their community, we at IMAS are privileged to name Dr. Cayetano and Mrs. Yolanda Barrera as this year“'s Collage Legacy of Service Honorees.
