What is a collage?

Collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a technique of art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

Page 3: Text collage

Where does the term “collage” come from?

The term collage derives from the French "coller" meaning "glue".[1] This term was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when collage became a distinctive part of modern art.

What does a collage include?

A collage may sometimes include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of novelty.

Let’s look at a famous collage:

Romare Bearden, The Calabash, collage, 1970

Page 6: Text collage

Can you identify what this collage is made from?

Page 7: Text collage

Things to think about in your composition:

How did this artist handle the negative space in this image?

Page 8: Text collage

How did this artist approach the use of value change?

Page 9: Text collage

How does this successfully show the foreground, middleground,

and background?

Page 10: Text collage

You must incorporate some typography in this collage, but you can also use other images as well… In this image, I used pictures of hair for the hair… lips for the lips… but you don’t have to do it that way… just something to think about!

Page 11: Text collage

Does this image have three-dimensional qualities to it? If so, how?

Page 12: Text collage

How did this image use text creatively?

Page 13: Text collage

How did they separate the background from the portrait?

Page 14: Text collage

This collage combined a variety of images to create the portrait. Of course, I will expect yours to be more detailed in addition to incorporating some text for value and texture as well.

This is a "COLLAGE" MIXED MEDIA made from: PAINTED PAPERS * ACRYLIC *

TORN PAPER PAINTINGS

Page 16: Text collage

You can approach this as creatively as you would like to… your image can become very abstracted and expressive.

Page 17: Text collage

This is an interesting approach.

Page 18: Text collage

This collage still created a composition of a woman, but had some additional images combined

into it.

We will add another twist to this project by combining different

fiber arts into our collage-

You can combine different materials with the paper text, such as yarn, string, wire, metal, reed, raffia, fabric, beads, shells, found materials. (PP1DHSL2)

Page 20: Text collage

This collage has incorporated some other fibers into it also… what do you see?

We will be approaching the main collage part of this differently, but what I like about this example is how they incorporated other fibers.

Page 21: Text collage

You can even add some splattered paint through a stencil for another layer of interest onto your collage.

Page 22: Text collage

What mixed mediums might they have used to create this?

Page 23: Text collage

The options are endless…you can be as creative with this as

you want…

Let’s talk about some collage techniques:

Overall Objectives:

Combine a change in value/color with texture (PP1AHSL2)

Create or modify an image using general software (PP1CHSL1)

Combine different fiber art materials (PP1DHSL2)

Contrast textures within the same artwork (EP1DHS3)

Steps:

1st we will find an image or images to inspire our work and save it.

2nd we will create a gmail account for each of you. In the gmail account you will import your saved image, and then use their photo editing program. We will experiment with different ways to edit the image’s value so you can think about this when you collage it.

3rd we will print the images and then we will begin the drawing process to map out the collage IF that’s the way you want to approach it… It will depend on what method of collage and end-product you are going for. We can discuss your approach after you brainstorm.

Basically, to simplify this- ask yourself this:

Do you want to find one image and recreate it using text and collage techniques?

Do you want to find more than one image and recreate them into one composition using text and collage techniques?

Search for images you want to recreate and then narrow down how you want your composition layed out. We are editing the image to help you see the value contrast for your collage techniques. You will not have to recreate them exactly like that, but it will be a tool to help you. You can either grid your image and recreate it that way, or just totally free for all it… Talk to me
