Introducing the 2006 class of Distinguished Colt Alumni

The late CHARLIE KEY, Class of 1959, capped his notable career at AHS byserving as student body president and receiving the Fielder Award. When JoyMcAlpine Key, ’59, was asked what Charlie might want the alumni to know abouthim and his feelings about AHS, she said it was where he discovered he was a leader.Joy also said that he met the love of his life on the stage of the old AHS building, and they had their first date at the football banquet their sophomore year. Charlie’sfootball prowess, as well as his leadership abilities, carried him through his playingand coaching days at Arlington State College (now UTA). He was active in school, college and community affairs right up until his untimely death in August 2005.Charlie’s children, Jon, ’84, and Leigh Ellen, ’88, followed their parents throughthe halls of Arlington High School. CHARLES MARSHALL, Class of 1951, and WANDA ROBERSON MARSHALL,Class of 1949, left Arlington shortly after marrying and it took them 22 years to get back.Charles moved up the ladder at Stratoflex in Michigan and Indiana returning to this area as vice-president in 1979. He eventually became president of the company until his retirement. Charles was lategraduating from AHS because he missed a year of grade school when he was hit by a car and broke his leg.No homebound instruction in those days! That broken leg mended, though, because Charles was a standoutfootball player for the Colts and holds city records to this day. Although the Marshalls weren’t surprised bythe town’s growth because of frequent trips back, Wanda says she felt they had come home the day sheknew the middle name of every one of her companions. Since their return, Wanda has been active in theArlington Historical Society, serving as the group’s treasurer for nine of her 11 years of service. Wanda alsoserved as treasurer of the Alumni Association for three years. Charles, past president of the AlumniAssociation, still serves on the Alumni Board of Directors. Class of 1949, DOROTHY THORNTON RENCURREL’S resumé of service to Arlington testifies to hercommitment to her home town. Her involvement in Arlington’s schools, clubs, arts, university and anythingrelated to history and its preservation earned her the title of Arlington Woman-of-the-Year in 1988. It’s notsurprising that the one piece of advice she would give any AHS alum is to “get involved in your community.”Dorothy says she is particularly proud of the work she did with various Arlington PTAs—service for whichshe received the first National PTA Life Membership awarded in our town. Alumni from the late 1940sprobably remember in the spring of ’48, the Colt Band won the statewide competition wearing the onlyuniforms they had at the time—white coveralls with green lettering on the back. When the band returnedto acclaim, Hooker Vandergriff and son Tommy saw the attire and decided it was time for real uniforms. Byfootball season of her senior year, Drum Major Dorothy and the entire band received band uniformscompliments of the Vandergriffs. MIKE WADE, Class of 1976, brought wife Amy, also 1976 class, and son Blake to Arlington in 2003.Arlington had been home to the Wade family for five generations, and Blake became a fourth generationColt ex upon his graduation this past May. The family left their home in Hubbard, Texas (where they had

AHS Alumni Associationraised their two older daughters Lauren and Keely) to realize Mike’s lifelong dream of opening up the onlyfamily run funeral home in Arlington, Wade Funeral Home. Just as in high school days where Mike was presidentof the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a letterman in football and track and voted Mr. AHS,Mike and Amy got involved in Arlington. They have been active in the Colt Football Booster Club,Theatre Arlington and Kiwanis Club. About coming back to Arlington, Mike says, “How sweet it is to be inColt Country. We love it here.” MAYFIELD WORKMAN, Colt By Choice, came to Arlington in 1947 to coach the Arlington Colts. He was onthe staff of the 1951 state championship team. Mayfield married Sterling Goodwin, AHS ’36, in 1942 afterthey met at North Texas State Teachers College in Denton (now the University of North Texas). Their threechildren, Rusty, ’63, Pamela, ’66, and Patricia, ’71, all graduated from AHS. In 1963, Coach Workman moved into administration as the school district’s first athletic director, a positionhe held until his retirement in 1980. The Arlington ISD honored his tenure as coach and AD by namingWorkman Junior High for him. Coach Workman thanks the people he worked with over the years for helpinghim transition AHS and AISD to the size it is today. Oh, and he remembers one of his players—CharlieMarshall—as “a good student and a good athlete.”

Robert Broughton and Kristen Batchelor, two of our 2006scholarship recipients, met alumni at the Open House. The Class of 1966 assembles on the front steps for a

2006 Alumni Scholars

All of our 2006 scholars have attended school in Arlington since elementary days. Their paths first crossed atBailey Junior High on their way to Colt Country. All four received the designation “Arlington Scholar” as theycompleted AHS.

KRISTEN BATCHELOR, who is headed to Texas Tech, is in the first generation of her family to attend college. Shehasn’t decided on a major yet. Arlington High’s traditions make it a great place to go to high school and she will takewith her the memory of “the friends I made and that I never went a day at school without someone makingme smile.”

ROBERT BROUGHTON, starting at Tarrant County College’s Southeast campus, plans to major in Theatre andPolitical Science and to eventually attend law school. He is a second generation collegian in his family. TheFielder Award winner (outstanding senior boy) says AHS is great because of its “spirit...warmatmosphere...excitement...pride.” He will remember mainly the “fun and enthusiasm of football season as wellas the warm and friendly folks.”

Honor graduates DANIELLE and SUMMER SCHARTZ (yes, they’re twins) will part ways this fall as Danielle moveson to Texas A&M and Summer heads for the University of Texas at Austin. Thanksgiving should be interesting forthat family! Danielle will major in pre-med while Summer starts out in Architecture/Interior Design. They are intheir family’s second generation to go on to higher education. Danielle loved the unity at AHS which made it“more like a family than just a place to learn.” Summer says the spirit, pride and tradition make AHS great. WhileSummer’s four years on Student Council will make fond memories, Danielle will treasure the friendships with herpeers as well as with the AHS faculty and staff.

The Association has funded twelve scholarships since our first recipients were named in 2003. Your donationsand purchases of X-pins and alumni t-shirts have made this possible. Our first winners, CHRIS BRANIGAN andQIANA ROLLINS will graduate next year. QIANA is on target to graduate from the University of Oklahoma in May2007. She will earn a degree in psychology and plans on post-graduate work. She admits these years at OU havepassed quickly. CHRIS returned to Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma after completing a semester withthe Focus on the Family Institute in Colorado in the fall of 2005. He continues his course work for a degree inMinistry & Theology and history. Following graduation in December 2007, he will go to Nazarene TheologicalSeminary in Kansas City.

Milestones

Our apologies for the tardy appreciation to two anonymous donors who earlier this year sent indonations to the scholarship fund of $500 and $1,500. Other exes (see list) contributed to the fund bypurchasing X-pins and/or Alumni t-shirts at reunions or the Alumni Open House. New item comingup: alumni caps. All profits from the sale of these items add to the scholarship fund.

Happy 50th Birthday to a grand building, nowshaded by towering live oak trees. Back in the day, students in Miss Amos’ Room 203, could see overthe trees toward town. This building opened in 1956and has harbored Colt Country for a half-century.
