Notes from the President
On behalf of the entire club, thank you Bob & Norma Joseph
for chairing the 14th Annual Corvette Caravan again this
year. It was great day weather wise and the route was
awesome cruising around Grand Island.
Most of the guests really liked viewing the beautiful homes
along the Niagara River at a very relaxing pace. Thank you
Paddock Chevrolet for being such a gracious host for the
Meet & Greet on Saturday evening and the Caravan on
Sunday. We appreciate you sponsoring Corvettes of Buffalo.
Finally, thank you to all the members for your assistance in
making our annual Caravan a huge success.
If you have not paid your club dues please bring a check to
the October meeting or mail a check to our Treasurer
Marianne Pastore. Dues are $50 for a single, $65 for a
couple and an additional $10 if your spouse would like to be a
member of the NCCC.
At the October business nominations will be opened for officer
positions and candidates will declare their intention to run for
office.
As recommended by Sue Brownlee, please bring
nonperishable items which can be used for a Thanksgiving
holiday meal for distribution by the Clarence Community Food
Pantry. This may include all sorts of canned vegetables,
cranberries, gravy, packaged stuffing, etc.
Sue also recommended at the November meeting members
bring unwrapped toys to the church for distribution for the
children in the Clarence community.
Enjoy the rest of the cruising season.
Frank

Editor’s note:
It’s 1955, Ike is POTUS, the average yearly
wage is $3300, Bill Haley and his Comets are
“Rockin’ around the clock” but the Corvette
prognosis is still doubtful until it gets help
from an unlikely source. See page

My interest in Corvettes as a kid started with the TV show Route 66. Every week for 4 years I got to watch a 1960 to finally 1963 Corvette on TV. Then in the summer of 1964 I was at the small boat harbor with my father and cousin getting ready to go out for a boat ride when a friend of my cousin showed up with a 1963 split window Corvette. I knew then I would have to have a Corvette someday. Little did I know it would be a lot of years? Then in 1966 I got my first job at Zynda's Delicatessen. If you lived in Depew / Lancaster area it was at French and George Urban. It later became Warren’s Del. I met a guy there who was a few years older than me, but we became friends. He had a black 1959 Corvette with a 327 engine and a 3 speed. (Wrong engine) I spent many summer and winter days cruising with him in that Corvette. Yes, he drove it in the winter with snow tires. It's the year 1970. I'm taking a 1960 Corvette for a test drive. A light blue with a blue interior. The convertible top was in pieces. It had the wrong engine, a 307, 2 barrel and a 3-speed transmission. With a hand shake agreement, I'm going to buy that Corvette for $1200. At least that's what I thought until I got home and told my father. He said “Are you nuts? You are leaving for basic training in the Army next week and it’s not going to be parked in the driveway”. That ended that deal. In the next 47 years I got to drive a few friends’ Corvettes. A 1970, 1973, 2004 and 2014. The stars were never aligned just right for a purchase and something always came up. I decided 2018 was going to be the year and with my wife's blessing I started looking. C2's were way out of my price range and I wanted something I could drive more often. C3’s up to C6’s. I wanted a convertible and a manual transmission. I finally decide on a C4. I like the looks of the C4 and decided I wanted a 1996 Collector Edition convertible with a black interior and a 6-speed. After months of looking I found a low mileage Collector Edition in New Jersey at Conte's Corvettes. My wife and I took a road trip to Conte's Corvettes. The car was everything I was looking for. I gave them a deposit to hold the Corvette. While waiting to get the paperwork done, my wife spotted my all-time favorite Corvette, a 1967. They had a big block 1967 on the floor. My wife said why I don’t get that one. I told her we couldn't trade our house for it ($197,000). 2 weeks later I drove a one-way rental car back to New Jersey and drove my 1996 Collector Edition home. I don't think I put the radio on for the first few hours of the drive. I was just listening to the music of the small block Chevy engine. Conte's Corvette was very easy to work with.

Our granddaughter, Kinsey, newly crowned Miss Bunker Hill High School in Claremont,
NC, needed a convertible to carry her in the Old Soldiers Reunion Parade in Newton, NC.
Grandpa Lowell immediately said, “I can dive her in our 2002 Corvette.” This, of course, meant
a trip to North Carolina in the Vette. We were going to visit anyway to watch Kinsey in the
parade and see her cheer at the football game that evening, so why not take the Corvette?
The pictures show Kinsey sitting on the deck and Grandpa Lowell behind the wheel.

This from Wayne Scudder
Photo credit: Brian Williams/Spiedbilde More From Road & Track New Chevrolet Corvette C8.R photos supplied to RoadandTrack.com reveal the brand’s next-generation road car and GT Le Mans racer as an interesting approach to mid-engine design. With its move from the familiar front-engine solution to a mid-engine chassis layout, the C8.R bids farewell to most of the styling cues that have made its predecessors easily recognizable. Only the retention of the C7/C7.R’s nose and faceted grille profile, along with its rear fender solution, stand out as identifiable carryover items. Without the engine dominating the front of the car, the C8.R sports a few obvious differences, most notably in its cooling architecture. Unlike Ford’s GT (below, in yellow), the Pratt & Miller Engineering team that designed the C8.R has avoided using large through-flow openings in the hood to evacuate hot air from the radiators. As best as we can tell, smaller exits at the back of the hood (in red) and possibly up high at the back of the wheel arches (also in red) have been employed to cool an engine that sounds a lot like a twin-turbo V8. Dual dive planes were fitted for initial testing, and a notched splitter, similar to what Lamborghini uses on its Huracan GT3 (below) serve as departures from the C7.R. In profile, the C8.R achieves something unique with its rear air intake and fender treatment. Where its in-state rival in GT Le Mans–and even the lower GT Daytona class–make use of tall ‘Flying V’ apertures to feed turbo intakes and intercoolers, the new Corvette has nearly halved the height of its V.
9
CORVETTES of BUFFALO
Take the Ford GT and Acura NSX GT3, in particular, and both employ Vs that connect with the roof. Not so with the C8.R, which condenses the opening to below the window. It allows the Corvette to have an uninterrupted fender formed with a gradual arc that stays connected to the body, and while it’s an assumption, the lack of heavily exposed intake/cooler ancillaries would suggest the Pratt & Miller Engineering team has opened up enough space behind the V to accommodate and tightly package those components. With Ford’s GT, the twin-turbo V6’s air intakes and intercoolers standoff of the body altogether, and with the NSX GT3, its turbo ancillaries extend outward into the laminar airstream by a fair amount. From the C7.R to the C8.R, the radiator inlet has narrowed, the windshield and roof angle isn’t surprisingly different, and the tall rear fenders have been incorporated to the best of Corvette’s ability. From these photos, we can see that the Corvette C8.R will be radically different than its predecessor. That might just make it a better competitor in both IMSA WeatherTech and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

History of the Corvette, part 3
The 1955 Corvette’s prognosis for long time viability was still in considerable doubt. The car
business was, and is still, run by accountants and accountants like to see sales numbers. Based
on the disastrous sales figures of 1954, the bean counters were pushing for a quick end to the
losses. On the other side was the engineering team led by Ed Cole. Ed and his crew just spent
the better part of 1954 developing a new, small block V8 engine. It was a 265 cu. Inch, OHV,
with a single 4 barrel carburetor and a high lift cam shaft that made 195 hp at 5000 rpm.
Engineering and Zora Arkus-Duntov joined forces and were able to beat back the assault by
the accountants; at least for the time being.
From the first glance of the 1955 Corvette, it looked pretty much like the 1954 Corvette,
sporting the same external dimensions. Still no roll-up windows or door locks, it wasn’t until
the hood was opened that the big changes were realized. Gone was the in-line 6 cylinder
engine with its balky tri-carb setup. In its place was the new 195 hp, 265 in^3 OHV V8. Power
to the rear wheels was by either a 3 speed manual gear box or the trusty 2 speed Powerglide
automatic. Meanwhile the rear end still carried the 3.55:1 ratio. Closer inspection revealed a
new 12 v electrical system while the vacuum operated windshield wiper motor was replaced
with an electric motor.
The new V8 featured independent rocker arms with no common rocker arm shaft. Mounted
on its own fulcrum ball and secured with a lock nut, each rocker was completely independent.
Combined with a short stroke, forged steel crank shaft, lightweight aluminum pistons and
hollow push rods, the new V8 felt right at home at high rpm. In fact, the tachometer was
redlined at 6500 rpm.
The 1955 Corvette performance:
0 – 30 mph, 3.3 sec. ¼ quarter mile 16.7 sec curb weight 2910 lbs.
0 – 60 mph, 8.7 sec. Top speed 120 mph lbs. /HP 14.92
0 – 100 mph, 24.7 sec. Braking 60 -0 mph 169 ft. MPG 18-22
Ford and GM always had a rivalry going, each trying to capture market share at the expense of
the other. Perhaps this rivalry was the most important contributing factor in the decision to
proceed with the Corvette. The introduction of the 1955 Ford Thunderbird convinced all
factions at GM that the Corvette was a worthy project to develop.
Still, only 700 copies of the 1955 Corvette were built and sold out of a projected 3000 units.
These dismal sales figures caused a lot of consternation between the accountants and the rest
of the company and the future of the Corvette still remained uncertain.

Classics on the Niagara car show was held in Niawanda Park and hosted by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 77 and American Legion Post 264 during the Labor Day weekend, 2018. There were 224 cars, trucks and motorcycles in attendance. A few raindrops did not dampen the spirit of the exhibitors or spectators. Corvettes of Buffalo was represented by 24 Corvettes and three were awarded trophies as chosen by the participants. The winners were Skip with his 1967 Roadster, Gene's 1963 Fuelie and Mel with his 1958. Next year a "Club Participation" category will be awarded and we plan on showing the community our spirit with even more cars.

ISLAND TOUR 2018
Blue skies and temperatures in the mid 70s were enjoyed by the owners of about 50 Corvettes
who attended the Meet & Greet at Paddock Chevrolet on Saturday night. Tomaso Food truck
provided dinner along with Italian ice for dessert while Paul Man from Jukebox Tonight
provided the music. The event lasted well into the evening with people sitting under the lights
enjoying conversation.
Sunday morning also provided us with midsummer temperatures and brilliant sunshine. A
perfect day to take a cruise around Grand Island and take in the scenery of the Niagara River.
This year 270 people with their 140 Corvettes started the day with Paula’s Donuts & Tim
Hortons Coffee The weather could not have been any better for the 14th Anniversary Corvettes
of Buffalo Caravan. A clear hour and a-half drive ending at Antonio’s Banquets in Niagara
Falls.
After a family style luncheon the group heard a presentation from Jeanmarie Cieslica from the
Summit Canter, we heard about the work they do every day to help autistic children and young
adults. A portion of the proceeds from this event went to Summit Center and we presented her
with a $1000.00 donation. Thank You to everyone who helped make this possible
Because of the continued generosity of the area merchant’s, we were able to award
approximately 25 door prizes of at least a $20 value. There were also Vanity Plate, Trivia and
Long-distance Awards with 4 attendees traveling 724 miles! Way to go, these cars are meant
to be driven. The luncheon concluded with one lucky Corvette Driver going home with $560
from the 50/50 drawing.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST WE WANT TO THANK EVERYONE INVOLVED THAT HELPED MAKE THIS
EVENT A GREAT SUCCESS.
WE TRULY ARE LIVING THE DREAM

Adirondack Vette Fest --- 2018
Mary Ann and I have been going to the Glens Falls/Lake George area and the Queensbury
Hotel since 1993. Since we were feeling good and the weather forecast was promising we
decided at the last minute to attend the Adirondack Corvette Club’s 2018 Vette Fest. Since
the deadline for registration had already passed I called Bill Riddervold and he was more
than happy to accept our registration. It was a little more difficult getting a room at the
Queensbury Hotel as part of the Vette Vest group but Mary Ann can be very persuasive.
We drove up on Friday and were surprised to meet Bob and Joan
Meegan at the registration table in the hotel. After checking in
we went to the Meet & Greet reception and met several nice
couples from the Adirondack area and Canada. We wanted to go
to one of our favorite restaurants in Lake George for dinner. We
were not aware that the 30th Annual Adirondack Nationals Car
Show was also being held this weekend in Lake George making
traffic very challenging to say the least. Saturday was bright and sunny for the road tour
through the mountains to the Basin Harbor Resort on Lake Champlain in Vermont for lunch.
The lunch was very good and there was a little golf competition after the lunch.
The cocktail hour and banquet Saturday evening was excellent. They had door prizes, basket raffles, a
50/50 drawing, and dancing until midnight. The weather for the Corvette only car show on Sunday was
sunny, windy, and a bit chilly. They had over 120 cars from NYC, New England, and Canada. Mary Ann’s car
won a trophy for one of the Top 14 Cars which was a nice finish to the weekend. We met a lot of nice people
and would definitely attend this event next year.

Thanksgiving Food Pantry Donations
The Clarence First Presbyterian Church has been a great meeting location for the Corvettes of
Buffalo for several years and to show our support and gratitude we are asking all members to
bring a Food Pantry donation to the October 13th meeting. As proposed by Sue Brownlee and
others any “Thanksgiving” non-perishables items would be greatly appreciated by Church Food
Pantry.
A few suggestions could be canned items such as vegetables, canned sweet potatoes,
cranberry sauce, gravy, or canned pumpkin. But any other non-perishable items such as boxes
of stuffing mix, instant potatoes, boxes of rice or desserts like cake mixes or brownie mix
would be a perfect donation to offer a thanksgiving dinner to families in the communities.
So look through your coupons and check the food adds in the papers so we can demonstrate
to the Church Food Pantry that the Corvettes of Buffalo truly gives thanks and appreciate their
hospitality!
Thank you for your support in advance!

STONEBRIDGE DRIVERS SPORTING ROADSTER TOUR 2018
My nephew and I attended the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival on September 7th/8th and participated in the
(SBDSRT) Stone Bridge Drivers Sporting Roadster Tour on Friday. We took our 1972 Coupe and the 2012
GrandSport, adding about 600 miles in the two days travel including 150 miles on Friday’s tour plus the over
and back to WNY.
Here are a few highlights; however, a web visit to Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival will give a much better
overall picture of a very busy couple of days. The SBDSRT was an all-day affair with an 8 am start to Segment
1, a restroom break & then Segment 2 consisting of more glorious twisting, turning two lane country roads
ending up at Knapp Winery & Vineyard for lunch (including a complimentary bottle of wine).
Segment 3 was another spirited one hour jaunt back to the staging area at Watkins Glen State Park where over
200 cars would restage on Main Street at 3:00 pm and begin three hustling parade laps around the 6.6 mile
Old Course. These laps gave insight to the bravery, courage and driving abilities of these men of yesteryear.
A few hay bales were “strategically” placed at corners as was the custom back in the 50’s. The village
streets were lined with thousands of people, cheering participants on, with folks camped out along the route
giving thumbs up to every driver going by. One of the perks at the very end was having dedicated reserved
parking right at the State Park in the middle of town for participants. Now at last on foot, by 4:00 pm all
manner of race cars roared into town and lined Main street which was closed the full length to allow foot
traffic to view numerous displays, racers, one offs, and Concour de Excellence cars.
My nephew and I did more concentrated driving than picture taking, thus I don’t know if the two measly
photos I sent Larry Dudeck will show much. I reiterate however, checking out the Festival website and
specifically looking at the Stonebridge Driving options will give much more insight to this annual festival of
noise and speed. I will say, should you sign up for 2019, you need to be prepared to drive with full
concentration and a competent navigator as even at legal speeds the roads provide some great challenges to
handling, braking and vigilance as you will run across a Mennonite buggy or two somewhere on the route
(including the commensurate “road apples”). We did overnight stays for two nights in Horseheads, NY, 25
minutes from the track to be fresh for the Friday Tour and be at Watkins Glen International for the 8:00 am
Saturday start of the Hilliard US Vintage Grand Prix.
We also signed up for the car show on Saturday at the track as well which affords not only a great parking spot
in the show, but three parade laps of the full track after lunch. I have been attending events at The Glen
since the July 1984 inaugural Camel Continental race for GTP race cars like the Porsche 962, rarely missing this
Vintage Weekend. If you have questions about costs, The Glen or the Festival see me at a COB meeting.
It is a great weekend activity about 2 ½ hours from Buffalo.
Best motoring regards, Marty link
