The November meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Chris Capshaw. Club Charity Presentations: Voting to take place at the Dec. club meeting. Vicki & Tom Ury, Dave & Phyllis Ury, Larry & Gwenda Valentine, Ron & Debbie Wynn, and Gerry & Kathy Turner thanked the club for once again accepting their nomination for The Foundation for School District 11’s two automotive programs. Wayne Hutchinson from the Foundation expressed gratitude for all that the club has done for the charity in the last 2 years and would love for it to continue this year. Vicki, Larry, Ron, and Gerry each stated how important the auto programs are to the community and would very much like to see them voted in as the club charity for 2022. Jodi & Todd DeSchepper, Steve & Anita Smith (with Benji), Lorren & Laurie Loewen, and Scott & Gail Applekamp nominated the Humane Society Pikes Peak Region for consideration as the club charity. Jodi explained how important pets are for our wellbeing and how much the HSPPR does for animals in need. She then introduced Jon Shiver and longtime club member Bill Ryans who is on the HSPPR board. They touched on all that HSPPR does for animals and owners. HSPPR helps 20,000 animals a year and cannot do this without community donations. They would greatly appreciate being the CSCC charity for 2022. Treasurer’s Report - Anita Smith reported on the budget for 2022. The biggest expenses are sanctioned events however we strive to recoup the expenses when the event takes place. It was a good year for the budget and the club is very comfortable going into the new year.

Secretary Report – Jodi DeSchepper. No corrections to the October minutes and they were approved as printed in the November newsletter. Please let Anita or Jodi know if you have any changes that need to be made to the roster.

Past Events: Fall Autocross – Todd DeSchepper thanked all the volunteers and drivers who came out. John Ames designed a very nice course. It started out cool but was a beautiful day and lots of fun.

Highway Beautification – Tom Ury About 21 people attended and made quick work of the cleanup. Thank you to all of them for attending. This was Tom and Pete’s last cleanup as chairs. Gary Walters has stepped up as a chair however one more person is needed.

Trunk or Treat – Chris Capshaw Six cars came out and handed out tons of candy and had a fun time. Thank you! Homecomings – Vicki Ury Vicki thanks all the members who came out to help with the 6 homecoming events. 44 cars helped in total and $610 was donated to the Christmas Basket fund. New Business: Christmas Baskets – Chris Capshaw Thank you to everyone who has donated. We are about $500 short of reaching our goal. A silent auction was taking place to hopefully help reach the goal. Museum Update – Barrett Benson. Barrett was unable to attend as he was at the museum however, he has raffle tickets to sell. Please mention his name if you purchase directly from the museum.

Good News- Bad News Suitcase Auction: The suitcase sold for $35 to Todd Butts.

New Cars, Upgrades, Special News: Tricia Jackson announced that she was once again a grandmother. This is her fifth grandchild – making it the “Jackson Five”.

Governor’s Report – Walt Jenkins: RMR Update – 3 sanctioned events remaining for the year. The NCCC renewals are finished with the help from Anita.

Upcoming Events: Nov. 7th – S’no Flakes Rally John and Colleen Williams explained that the start will be at the Drury Inn. It will be a little different poker run but will be a great time for all and there will be donuts.

Dec. 16th – Club Christmas Party Chris Capshaw stated that there will be a live band, door prizes, and a good meal. It should be lots of fun. Last day to sign up is the Dec. club meeting.

Guests were introduced by Tom Phillips. First time guests were Dave Puerta, Pete Santos, and Jim Covey. Second time guests included Dennis Pendleton & Barb Porter, Terry & Laua Acree, Scott Cronk, and Robert Cummings. Third time guests included Dean Mattes, John Amen, Jim Snyder, Gary & Val Cronk, Tim Searl, David & Marjorie Eaves, and John Kennedy. They were all voted into the club. Welcome! Door Prizes Winners - Thank you for door prize contributions from Daniels Long. Congratulations to all the winners. The Meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm. Minutes by Jodi DeSchepper

Season’s Greetings friends, It looks like fall weather is upon us and while we enjoy family and friends for Thanksgiving, I wanted to give an update and very big hugs to everyone for making this Christmas basket gift card a successful one! We met our goal and delivered 125 gift bags (with hot wheels) to the schools for distribution to the families in need in our community. Thank you all so much for your support in this wonderful event! I would like to give a personal thank you to all the volunteers and committee members who helped make this event happen: Packaging and delivering the gift cards was done by Colleen and John Williams, Dan and Linda McCarty, Tom and Vicki Ury, Alta and Pete Olejnik, and Patty Strauch, Gary Benson, Chris and Jonathan Capshaw and Caryn Renholm. We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends get together, create an event, and make a difference in someone’s life! We cannot say thank you all enough for your time and generosity! Happy Holidays, Brent and Caryn Renholm

It was a fabulous day for an autocross if you don’t mind being a little chilly in the morning, however the sun was bright. We had a great turnout with 26 drivers. They took to the track that was designed by John Ames at 9:00 sharp. Once the tires warmed up the times improved. We cannot thank our volunteers and the drivers that attended enough. John Ames, Rick McGuffin, Chris & Jonathan Capshaw, and Ron & Jeanne Urban ventured out Saturday to help setup the course. They were there as well on Sunday to finish setting up. Rick McGuffin made a quick trip into town to pick up some additional flour for John. Walt Jenkins and Paul Thompson setup and took care of the timing, Steve and Anita Smith helped with the grid and starting. Roger Miller made sure everyone was teched in the morning and helped with the grid as well. John Ames setup a fun track with only positive comments. All ran very smoothly except one little insistent with the finish timing light. Drew DeSchepper managed to get a little close to it and bent a bracket but thankfully it was still functioning after. Overall, I would say everyone had a fun time and that it went off without a hitch. The club was able to add $1,187 to the coffers. Thank you again to everyone that came out to drive or volunteer. Todd, Jodi, and Drew DeSchepper

Trunk-or-Treat

On 29 October the Wounded Warrior Program staff held their annual Trunk-or-Treat Halloween event on the Evans Army Community Hospital grounds. For the 9th year-in-a-row, although not a sanctioned event, members of the CSCC have volunteered their beautiful cars, and trunks, in support of our battle-scarred soldiers and their families. The event coordinator, Mrs. Torres from the Wounded Warrior Program office, counted over 400 kids and families receiving loads of candy from 5:00pm until the sun sat behind Cheyenne Mountain. She along with the Battalion Commander give their most heartfelt gratitude to the drivers and navigators that came out to support this great organization. Hats off to Kristi and Tony Gonzalez (rookie members), Dave and Joanne Browning, Steve Bello, Tom and Kathy Phillips, and

Colleen and John Williams. Thanks so very much for your support and see 'ya next year." SAVE THE WAVE✋!

HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING SEASON Submitted by Vicki Ury

After the crazy COVID-19 year, it was sooo nice to be working with the students once again. The 2021 high school homecoming season was packed with hot Corvettes and many smiles. The high school students were very excited to hitch a ride in one of our cars. AND, best of all, each high school has made a donation to our Christmas Food Basket Fund. At each of the 6 homecoming events, Falcon’s, St. Mary’s, and Mesa Ridge’s half-time shows; Palmer’s, Coronado’s, and Discovery Canyon Campus’s parades, spectators cheered on their students and admired our Corvettes. At the St. Mary’s event, parents came out of the stands to admire and talk about the cars – of course all the drivers had plenty to say. A total of 44 Corvettes were requested for the 6 events! The Colorado Springs Corvette Club was definitely well represented throughout our community. I would like to thank all of the club members that so generously donated their enthusiasm, time, and car washes. A HUGE THANK YOU to: Paul Thompson for being an onsite coordinator at one event. An equally BIG THANK YOU to all the drivers: Terry Darby, Bob Knowles, Gerry Turner, Mike Dittman, Todd and Jodi DeSchepper, Roger Grace, Drew DeSchepper, Bob Balink, Brent Renholm, Dan McCarty, John Williams, Pete Olejnik, Patty & Dick Strauch, Larry Valentine, Chris Capshaw, Calvin Helus, Eric Hall, Todd Barnhardt, Mark Muren, Rick McGuffin, Ron Hubert, Paul Thompson. I would also like to thank my husband, Tom Ury, for all the running around he does for me at this time of the year.

Friends at CSCC –

I cannot begin to thank you enough for the beautiful flower arrangement for my

Mom’s service. She would have loved it.

Thank you for thinking of our family during this very difficult time. We truly

appreciated the warm words and support.

Truly,

Denise & Jerry Phillips

CSCC Highway Beautification Hi to all members and interested parties. On October 23rd the Colorado Springs Corvette Club did our civic duty and picked up trash along Highway 83 in Security. Approximately twenty-three volunteers attended the event. The weeds were high, however, we only lost two members in the process of removing the trash. We are expecting them to show up within the next two or three events. Ha Ha. This was Tom’s and Pete’s last time co-chairing the event and Gary Walters has agreed to take over the responsibility of chairing the trash pick-up. THANKS A TON GARY. We look forward to following your direction in the future. Respectfully submitted by Pete and Tom

How long have you been a CSCC member? Since July 2019. What Corvette(s) do you currently own or have owned? Currently own a 2015 crystal red coupe. Had a 2003 50th Anniversary edition that he traded for the C7. Marital Status? Been married to Diane for 40 years. How did you meet? Gary was back home in Pennsylvania on leave from the marines. He was at the community pool and saw some cute young women in bikinis and decided to go over and say hello. One of those young women was Diane. They talked and hit it off. After dating for five years, they tied the knot. Where are you from? Gary and Diane are both from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Employment? Gary joined the marines a year after graduating high school. He was an avionics repairman for the F4 Phantom Fighter-Bombers. (Now mostly in museums and not in service anymore). He was stationed in Korea, the Philippines, and Okinawa, Japan. He was in for almost four years when on leave his first day back he was in a head on collision. He was going to sign up again for another four years, but the accident prevented him from doing that. He then went to college and got an associates art degree. He became a field service electronics technician under contract and traveled all over the U.S. for about seven years. At that time Diane said that if they wanted to have kids, she needed him to stay put and not travel all over. They moved to Austin, TX in 1983 where Gary worked as a department manager at Xetel Corp. building circuit boards. He then took a job at Applied Materials as a contractor working on semi-conductor equipment. In 1995 Gary had the opportunity to transfer to Atmel (now Microchip) as an employee in Colorado Springs which he gladly accepted. He was an equipment engineer. He retired in 2017 spending 30 years in the semi-conductor industry. In 2020 Gary went back to Microchip working part time as a contractor. Diane worked in IT in Austin for 10 years. Upon moving to Colorado Springs in 1995 she has been the financial Secretary for the First Evangelical Free Church for 26 years now. Kids? They have 3 children. Brian is 31 and is the parts warehouse manager at Subaru. Kate is 28. She lives in Austin and design’s websites. Jeff is 27 and is a counselor for D-49 school district.

Pets? They have two cats, named Jeb and Lindy, that they inherited from their daughter. Favorite club activity? The car shows and cruises are their favorite activities. Hobbies? Gary likes to go shooting and rides his mountain bike. In the past he was a scuba diver and sky diver. Gary also volunteers one day a week at Care and Share and another day a week at Habitat for Humanity. Diane has been looking after her elderly mother who is in assisted living. Gary called Diane a “beach” girl because she loves spending time at the beach and ocean. What is the best vacation you ever took? They really enjoyed their cruise to the Bahamas. What is your dream corvette? Gary says it would be a C8 manual transmission. How did your love of Corvettes come about? Gary has always wanted a Corvette since he was a kid. In 1985 he bought a “poor man’s Corvette” which was a 1969 Camaro. He enjoyed it, but it had no A/C and they were living in Texas so he sold it. Gary thought “if I’m ever going to get a Corvette now is the time.” He bought the C5, and 3 months afterwards drove it back to Pennsylvania several times. (Unfortunately for funerals). He said that the C5 was a great road trip car getting 35 miles to the gallon and he loved the “trunk” space. He misses the trunk space in the C7 but loves having more horsepower! Anything else you would like to add? Gary was watching a parade many years ago and saw that the Corvette Club was represented in it. He didn’t know that there was a club in town. He contacted Chris about joining. Once he joined, he realized that he knew Pete and Alta O. for years from church. Small world! Thanks for the interview Gary.

79 Members Present at the December Meeting

Watch for Dub Bridge Card Party

This is tons of fun!!! Keep an eye on the calendar for details to come. This is a simple fun Card Game. You don't have to know how to play to join in the fun. Some knowledge of a deck of cards is helpful. If you can follow

directions, that is all you really need. (This is not bridge).

S’No Flakes Rallye----Colleen and John Williams, Chairs CSCC held its S’No Flakes Rallye on November 7th. Previous weather forecast was for very cold weather, but that Sunday was a beautiful 77°, so definitely No Snowflakes! 25 corvettes participated in a poker run involving 4 “drive-by” gimmicks: Bow n Arrows hitting snowflakes, Ring Toss onto empty bottles, Nerf Gun n Bullets aiming at Save the Wave Corvette Hands and Throwing Newspapers into Hulu Hoops. Earlier this year – Tri-Lakes Car Show and Florence Pioneers Day Parade

Florence Pioneers Day Parade – Submitted by Gerry Turner "On Saturday September 18th the CSCC was represented in the Florence, CO 100th Annual Pioneers Day Parade. This is the fifth year Members participated in the Parade that honors Denver Broncos by escorting them in the parade. This year was different. The Broncos did not attend because of the China virus, so "plus ones" got to ride. Out of the 90 entries in the parade our Corvettes are a BIG and LOUD favorite! This year returning Drivers included Liz Scott, Phil Moore, Skip and Rita Seiling, Brian Dahl, Tim and Elaine Collins and Gerry Turner. New Member and a new participant was Rick McGuffin with his daughter Mackenzie. After the parade the participants had brunch/lunch at the Gooseberry Patch in Penrose."

Tri-Lakes Charity Car Show – submitted by Chris Capshaw

On Sunday, August 29th, twenty-three club members and two future club members entered 14 Corvettes and 5 other vehicles, in the Tri-Lakes Charity Car Show. The show was put on by the Tri-Lakes Cruisers Car Club, and benefited Tri-Lakes Cares, an organization which helps disadvantaged families in the Tri-Lakes area. About 300 cars of all shapes, sizes, and ages, competed for some very cool trophies. Judging was extremely difficult, because of the quality of all the entrants. When the judges’ decisions were all tabulated, some of our members, and two future members walked away with some of those cool trophies. Steve Kennedy’s 1964 coupe and Gary Yale’s 1963 coupe, both brought home Best Corvette honors. Tom Phillips secured a Best 2000 and Newer trophy with his 2014 convertible, as did Roxann Dearman with her newly acquired 2005 Viper. Gerry Turner brought home the honor of having the Best Stock entry. Future member Kent Rooks’ 1967 coupe also won Best Corvette, while Ace Cos snatched up the Best Mopar award for his entry. A good day for all.

Just for a Chuckle Submitted by Larry Valentine

How long have you been a CSCC member? Paul has

been a member since April of 2016. Judy joined in

October of 2018.

What Corvette(s) do you currently own? Currently

own a 2012 Grand Sport Convertible (a gift from

Paul to Judy for Valentine’s Day), and a 2017 Grand

Sport. He traded in a 2016 for the 2017. At age 18

Paul’s father bought him a 1965 coupe which he

sold when he went into the military.

Marital Status? Been married for 1-1/2 years, still

newlyweds!

Where are you from? Paul was born and raised in

Denver and Judy was born and raised in the

Detroit, Michigan area, but moved to Colorado in

1970.

Employment? At age 16 Paul became a professional

rodeo cowboy (bull rider). He was on the rodeo

circuit for four years, until he got hurt. His parents

were very supportive during his rodeo career. He

then joined the Army and was in special forces for

17 years. He flew helicopters and retired from Fort

Carson in 1990. After his Army career he had a

construction company for four years, but then

gave that up. He then did command training which

took him around the world where he trained

General officers and staff. He did this for 12 years

until he retired. Judy worked for United

Paramedics for special events. Then she worked as

an office assistant for 18 years until she retired.

Kids? Paul has five children, 13 Grandkids, and four

Great Grandkids. Judy has two children and three

Grandkids.

Pets? Two horses, three cats, and one dog.

Favorite club activity? They both enjoy the road trips

and rallies. Paul has also enjoyed doing a few of

the autocrosses.

Hobbies? Paul’s hobbies include horses, fishing,

and hunting. Judy is a CASA volunteer and enjoys

gardening and taking care of animals.

What is the best vacation you ever took? When Paul’s

mother was alive, they took her to Tuscan, AZ to

visit family, including kids and Grandkids. (His

mother lived to be 100 years old). Paul also enjoyed

many ski trips to Austria, Switzerland, and

Germany. Judy’s favorite was going to Italy.

What is your dream corvette? They are both very

content with the Corvettes that they own now,

although Paul does like the brand-new ones too!

How did your love of Corvettes come about? As

previously stated, Paul’s Dad bought him a 1965

Corvette when he was 18. Paul said it was almost

too much car for him, but he did love the Corvettes.

He always thought that they were magnificent cars.

He got to own a Corvette again after he retired. He

originally bought the 2016 for his wife who

unfortunately passed away. Paul jokingly said that

going to his first two CSCC club meetings cost him

two Corvettes. He bought the 2017 after his first

meeting. It was in the showroom. On his second

meeting he was sitting next to the 2012 during the

meeting and went back the next day to buy it.

Anything else that you would like to add? They both

have enjoyed some of the past club’s activities, but

due to health reasons have not been able to attend

meetings recently.

Thanks for the interview, Paul and Judy.

2021 AMBASSADOR CONVENTION

911 Exhibit Along with over 70 other Ambassadors from across the country, I attended NCM’s Nov. 2-3 Ambassador Convention; it was the largest turnout to date! Our private tour of the 911Tunnel 2 Towers exhibit that travels across the U.S. was moving and emotional for everyone. The Museum hosted the exhibit during its annual 3-day on-site Vets ‘N’ Vettes over Veteran’s Day weekend. The trailer housing the exhibit was escorted to NCM’s parking lot by the Museum’s C8 convertible and 8 police vehicles, including the Sheriff’s and Bowling Green police departments. New York Fire Department’s 911 responders were on hand to relate their personal experiences and stories of survivors and those who died. We must never forget! If you have the opportunity, visit this memorable exhibit when it comes to Colorado. Convention Hilites The Museum is undergoing changes as Sharon Brawner assumed the CEO/Presidency on September 1, 2021. She’s very busy learning “the ropes.” Addressing the Ambassadors, she shared some insights on the direction the Museum must take, noting that while the “Sinkhole” is important to the Museum, it must be part of the past. Her goal is to make NCM “excellent” instead of continuing to be just “great!” As former VP for the Country Music Hall of Fame, she brings a unique perspective to the Museum that will help achieve these goals. We can expect to see important changes, staff re-assignments, and new ideas incorporated into the operation of both the Museum and Motorsports Park. One of the first changes is NCM’s new hours (in last month’s Vette Set). New staff assignments affecting the Ambassador Program include Chris Sweeney, appointed Membership/Ambassador manager, and Bobbie Jo Lee, Development manager, assisting Chris. They replace Stephanie Morrill, now NCM Operations manager. Fortunately for the Ambassadors, Stephanie, who managed Membership/Ambassador services since its inception, will continue “unofficially” in the ambassador program. Bryce Burklow, in addition to currently managing public and private events, is now Director of the newly created Events and Building Services.

RAFFLES I will have Corvette Raffle Ticket Request Forms at the January meeting. Upcoming Raffles: January 13, 2022 2022 Black coupe at $100 per ticket; April 30, 2022 2022 Arctic White convertible, unlimited tickets at $20.
