Greetings to The Vette Set,
Once a year The Vette Set gets together for the traditional event call “The Sweetheart Rally”
held during the month of February. In my opinion, it is probably the club’s favorite event of
the year. The Tullys & Whitfords put on this great event. The Rally was mapped out and all
couples headed out for a nice sightseeing road trip. We were all handed a set of questions
or clues as part of the fun to seek out the answers as we travel along. By the time we
finished the Rally we visited some of the most special places in the South Bay area. You’ll
find some great pictures here in the Gazette of the places we visited. Then we gathered at
the Tully’s home to eat, drink and be merry. From a personal view; traditionally I remove the
top off my C5 and give the key to my lovely wife to drive it for the Rally. Yes, that makes me
the navigator. (Tough job, being the navigator!) I have to laugh since my wife becomes quite
the “lead foot” as we roar from each view point to view point. The purpose of sharing all of
this is just to acknowledge what a great and fun time we The Vette Set have together. We
bond as a club and enjoy our hobby of driving our Corvette.
During our March General Meeting we passed the 2014 Budget of The Vette Set. Believe it
or not; this was actually a fun exercise. We definitely had a lot of discussion. It was great to
get the feedback or candor from the membership. It gives the Board a snap shot of what the
membership expectations are.
Our next focus is our 39th Annual Car Show. Just a few weeks away with the days clicking
away! If you’d like to volunteer to help out the Car Show Committee will “Welcome You with
Open Arms”! The Vette Set has a long tradition of holding one of the best car shows in
Southern California. It’s always an exciting day. Step-up and contact John Tully, Dick
Whitford or me and we will get you all lined up. This is our club’s way of giving back to other
clubs who also hold these fabulous events. Let’s show everyone how we The Vette Set
holds a grand car show.
Finally, remember what brings us all together: our excitement, joy and the fun of owning a
Corvette! We each have a special way of bonding with our Corvette. The Vette Set is a proud
club whose members can have fun and take care of business.
Thank-you and always remember...
Vettes are made to be driven…drive your Vette and enjoy the ride!

NCM UPDATES
1962 Black Corvette Successfully Saved
It's been almost three weeks since a 40' wide, 60'
deep sinkhole opened up within the Skydome of the
National Corvette Museum, taking eight prized Cor-
vettes with it. Construction and engineering teams
have been hard at work since day one, putting a plan
in place for the recovery of the cars and restoration of
the building.
The recovery of the three most accessible Corvettes:
the 2009 "Blue Devil" ZR1, a 1993 40th Anniversary
Ruby Red Corvette and a 1962 Black Corvette commenced on Tuesday with all three cars
being successfully saved. Monday's "Operation Corvette Plus" resulted in the recovery of the
2009 and the 1993 and nearly all day Tuesday was dedicated to the 1962 – a car that was
recovered around 1:45 pm CT giving spectators watching from the Museum's Plexiglas
viewing area and the construction and engineering crews a huge sigh of relief.
The team began work early Tuesday, extracting a portion of the car lift that had become
mangled around the car, removing the hood from the '62 and tying a strap to the engine bay,
then drilling anchors into the slab of concrete that appeared to be wedged into the grill. In
hooking their lifting devices to the car they discovered that they didn't have to lift the slab to
free the car. "Really, all that went better than I expected ... that's my favorite car," said Mike
Murphy, CEO of Scott, Murphy and Daniel Construction.
"I see body damage. The chassis looks intact, the frame's not bent, the interior (other than
being a little dirty) is pristine. So, I think it's some fiberglass work, some ornamentation work,
and paint, n said John Spencer, Manufacturing Integration Manager at the GM Corvette
Assembly Plant. "This car is in amazing shape considering what it's been through. I don't see
anything unrepairable.“
Murphy indicated that the next step will be to remove the concrete slab off the bank of the
hole, and to remove the rest of the car lift. After those are out of the way they will begin
stabilizing and securing the red spire and the walls of the hole. "I'm tickled to death that we
were able to get those three cars out with no problems, and they were in good condition," he
added.
All three cars are now on display in the Museum's Exhibit Hall. They will be joined in late April
by the remaining five Corvettes - marking a culmination of the sinkhole recovery efforts. The
Museum is planning a formal exhibit of these cars "as is," along with various photos, videos,
information and artifacts through August 3. The plexiglass viewing area of the Skydome will
be available as long as construction is on-going, and the 'dome' is expected to re-open by
late August.
PPG Pace Car Rescued From Sinkhole
Yesterday we reported on the surprising recovery of the One I Millionth Corvette. In another
unexpected turn of events, the construction crew was able to go ahead and also save the
1984 PPG Pace Car.
6
After a 10 ton slab of concrete and the Millionth Cor-
vette were extracted, the team, had a better view of
the PPG car and could hook on to it. When they did
so; the car barely moved - and they then discovered
there was more concrete under the dirt and on top
of the car. They were able to remove the concrete
and then lift out the PPG car. Unfortunately, this car
is the most damaged to date as the concrete had
judo chopped" it.
Crew Took Opportunity to Grab Car During Sinkhole Prep
In an unexpected turn of events, the Millionth Corvette
was resurrected from the depths of the sinkhole to-
day. "Initially there was no intention to bring the
Millionth out, but as we got in there and saw more
this morning we did feel like this might be our best
chance," said Danny Daniel, President of Scott,
Murphy and Daniel Construction.
Danny indicated that they pulled the car by one wheel
from where it was lodged and it swung free into the
cavern. They were then able to lift the car and place
it to rest, upside down on the bottom of the sinkhole.
Finally, the Corvette was hooked up by its two tires for final lifting out of the sinkhole, much
like the process to retrieve the 1993 40th Anniversary. "Went like a champ, we were tickled
to-death,' added Daniel.
"The Millionth Corvette has been through a lot, but the damage at first glance seems to be
less extensive than what it could have been, especially given the precarious spot the car
landed," said Bob Hellmann, Facilities and Displays Manager at the Museum. ''The
undercarriage and frame look to be in good condition and everything else is repairable.“
The Millionth Corvette was built at 2:00pm on July 2, 1992 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Just
like the first 1953 Corvettes, it bears a white exterior, red interior and is a convertible. The car
was donated to the Corvette Museum by General Motors. In a press release from 1991, Jim
Perkins, General Manager for Chevrolet at the time, said "We've been looking for a way to
support the goals of the museum, which are to enshrine a great car and the great people
who made it an American institution." This donation came two years before the museum that
exists today had opened its doors.

Our Car Show is only a month away, April 5, 2014. Linda Glaza is receiving many
raffle/silent auction prizes and goodie bag items. If you have a donation for the raffle or
silent auction please let us know. Linda needs to prepare those items prior to the Car
Show.
We are running 3 times the registrations as last year. So this appears to be a banner year
for us. If you have not signed up for one or several jobs at the Show please let Dick
Whitford know where you would like to help.
Rob Weimer has been contacting potential vendors. So far we have commitments from
Braun’s Automotive (Muscle Car and Hot Rod Restoration), Leanne Howie (Photography),
Greg (Adam’s Car Care Products and Professional Detailer), Colleen Erickson (sun glasses
and hats, etc), and Chris Licata of Beach Coast Insurance. The National Corvette Museum
store will be with us again under the direction of George Person.
Ricardo Flemming has volunteered to coordinate chairs, tables and pop-ups. If you can
loan the Car Show any tables or pop-ups, please let him know. Chairs will come from ours
at WIN.
If you have any friends, associates, etc. who have a unique, common, well kept, or work-in-
progress GM cars or truck, please invite them to our show. Our flyer and registration form
are on our web site www.thevetteset.com. Last year we were able to give trophies to all the
Classic Chevy’s that came. And we received great notice by the Corvette’s for the
Concourse judging.
Linda Tully has been distributing raffle coupons. If you need more please contact her. Our
raffle is a highlight of our Show. Prizes from sponsors and club members draw interest
from all Car Show participants. It not only raises funds for our charity but gives the Car
Show participants another focus and anticipation of award.

Another month has rolled by and here are some abridged highlights from our West Coast
Region: (Thanks to Cliff Harris, our WC Regional Membership Director, for the detailed
information.)
Our regional officers attended a recent national NCCC gathering held quarterly each
year. Saving money, growing membership, sinkhole update and 2014 national convention
plans were discussed. In case someone asks you, NCCC has 17,012 members now. The
highest in the last decade. TVS has 74 NCCC members and 29 who are not.
An opportunity exists; the editor of the Blue Bars is stepping down and needs
replacement. Interested? Contact me.
On the subject of Blue Bars; it's important that you notify me when you have a change of
address otherwise you will not receive your copy on time, if ever. It's also expensive
because two issues are distributed to cover your mailing. As your club Governor (a.k.a.
"Governator"), I have the access to update the national NCCC records for TVS identity and
addresses almost instantly. What power, eh?
The national NCCC has established e-mail boxes on the internet for all Corvette clubs in the
organization. The idea is that all clubs will get information due regardless of who is the local
Governor. Ours is working and I suggest TVS Governor and Secretary have access to it and
pass on the information to others in the club. This will prevent confusion and make things
easier.
Drive your Corvette and "Save the Wave!"

HISTORICAL REPORT
ANNUAL SWEETHEART RALLY SATURDAY FEB 15, 2014
Gary & Wendy Dick, Oscar, Marilyn & Wendy Rob, Pat, Janette & Pat
This year the gimmick rally was revived with a cruise through Southern California beach communities. This was a much more simplified rally so we enjoyed the ride while finding the “easy” gimmicks. Since there was no rain, we met at the Krispy Kreme on Artesia at 10 AM.
Starting at Krispy Kreme
Sights Along the Way In Long Beach we drove up the famous Hill Climb, made a quick stop at Dis- covery Park and arrived at the top of Signal Hill to view the entire L.A. Basin and Harbor. In Seal Beach we drove past the Red Car Museum, went through downtown Seal Beach and headed back through Naples and over the Vincent Thomas Bridge to the Korean Bell in San Pedro.
The bell is rung only three times each year: the Fourth of July, August 15 (Korean Independence Day) and New Year's Eve.

One could only guess what was being discussed at the dining room table.

After our visit to the Korean Bell, we headed for the party destination of the day – John and Linda Tullys’ house to enjoy a great lunch and fellowship. John and Linda prepared hors d’oeuvres, a bratwurst luncheon and desert.

Thanks to: John & Linda Tully, Toni & Dick Whitford
And the winners are… …Pat/Sharon (3rd), Rob/Janette (2nd), Jerry/Marcie (1st)
At the beginning of the run, we were given directions for the tour and gimmick questions
for sights along the way. The answers were written by the Corvette navigator and we
turned in our answer sheets at the Tullys’. The winners were - in first place: Jerry and
Marcie, in second place: Rob and Jeannette and in third: Pat and Sharon. Thanks to
everyone who organized and helped with this fun-filled day, especially, John, Linda, Dick
and Toni.
This was another Sweetheart Rally where the participants were able to take a scenic ride
and view sites in “our own backyard” that we passed by numerous times but never took the
time to explore. The visit to Hill Top Park on the top of Signal Hill was very informative with
respect to Long Beach’s oil history. The time that the Tullys and Whitfords spent in creating
this run was not lost on the club members. The clues were challenging enough to make it
interesting, but easy enough to limit tension in the crew compartments.
