The Chicago Tribune has named it one of the 60 must-seeworldwide events for 2013. The Daytime television networkfeatured it as one of four top travel destinations in 2013 (alongwith Turkey, Rio de Janeiro and Sri Lanka).

It is the Bicentennial Celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie, and the epicenter is the Lake Erie Islands area of the northcoast. So forgo plans for a summer vacation and get the guestroom ready, because this is where it is happening.

Perrys Monument and Victory Center on Put-in-Bay willbe the location for many of the activities from late Augustthrough September 10. The Celebration will include a eet ofTall Ships in an historic recreation of the Battle of Lake Erieand Port Festivals in waterfront cities in the U.S. and Canada.Visitors will be able to tour the ships, enlist as crew members inthe reenactment or be part of the Bicentennial Fleet or Militia.

There will be a parade of boats; a performance by the OhioState University marching band; a Regency Ball; presentations

on the War of 1812 in history music, dance, fashion, lm andart; a military y-over, a Boy Scout encampment; Lights ofPeace harbor illumination; and many other events throughoutthe region.

For a schedule of activities, see the Calendar of Events onpages 12-13 of this issue of Coastlines.

In eastern Ottawa County, we are all environmentalists. There is no 2% vs. 98% when the subject is the health of LakeErie. The recently organized Lake Erie Improvement Associa-tion held a meeting on Catawba in December to look onceagain at the challenges facing the lake and unveil a strategicplan to address those challenges.

A number of familiar faces took to the podium to discuss thetwo major issues of harmful algae blooms and invasive specieslike Asian Carp. Dr. Jeff Reutter, director of Ohio Sea Grant, spoke at length about what is considered the primary causeof the 2011 algae blooms in the western basin of Lake Erie--the loading of contaminates such as phosphorus into the Lakevia runoff and other harmful discharges. We had a very wetspring and summer in 2011, which caused a lot of runoff intothe lake, which caused the growth of huge algae blooms in thewestern basin, said Dr. Reutter. If we have a wet spring in2013, we are going to be right back were we were in 2011.

State Representative and State Senator-Elect Randy Gardnerjoined forces with several other Ohio legislators last year andcreated the Healthy Lake Erie Fund, which allocated $3-mil-

lion for Lake Erie improvement. I think it is necessary forOhio to get involved in improving Lake Erie, Gardner stated.Because the political environment is right, we are now in amuch better position than we were 12 months ago.

Ottawa Countys tourism director Larry Fletcher used GrandLake St. Marys in west Ohio as an example of what can beaccomplished with signicant activism. A group was formedafter Grand Lake St. Marys was nearly given up for dead dueto toxic algae. They lost 25% of their tourism dollars over two

years, said Fletcher. That is when a group of governmencials and business leaders got together to work on the plem.

Ottawa County tourism creates over 3,000 jobs and overmillion in wages. Erie Countys numbers are nearly 4 tithat. Maintaining a healthy Lake Erie is an economic neces

Jenny Cornell of Hull & Associates worked with a local gr

of collaborators to create the Lake Erie Improvement Assotion (LEIA). Two key players were Sandy Bihn of Oregon started Lake Erie Water Keepers and Jim Stouffer, Chairand CEO of Catawba Island Club. The goal of the LEIA iprovide an economically viable plan for the sustainable rration of Lake Erie and its tributaries.

Some of their recommendations include : 1) issuing a LErie Annual Report Card; 2) upgrading outdated septic tems such as the Detroit Wastewater Treatment Plant; 3) moting nutrient reduction practices; 4) reducing phosphrunoff on agricultural land by one pound or more per acrserving as business representative for Lake Erie.

The attendees were reminded about when the CuyahRiver caught on re and how bad Lake Erie was environm

tally in the late 1960s. A concerted effort saved Lake Erie which led to a shing and boating renaissance in the 19But monitoring activities ended in the late 80s, and now Erie is in trouble again. The plan is to re-institute manthose measures to save the lake again. Thousands of jobs astake, jobs that cant be exported. Along the shoreline from Toledo to Sandusky, there are over

30 privately owned hunting clubs. A majority of the fertilecoastal marshes are on these private lands. Many of theseclubs are working together and with conservation agencies tohelp manage the wetlands.

Winous Point Shooting Club and Winous Point Marsh Con-servancy share stewardship of one of the largest wetlands re-maining in Ohio, combining a passion for waterfowl huntingwith wetlands protection.

Winous Point Shooting Club is the oldest shooting club inthe United States. Founded in 1856 by a group of wealthyClevelanders, it maintains an elite membership, never morethan 30 members. Members have included John Hay, privatesecretary to Abraham Lincoln and United States Secretary ofState under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roos-

evelt. When duck hunting season begins in mid-October, themembers and their guests return to the revitalized marshesto hunt wood ducks, teal and mallards. Each morning afterbreakfast guides take the hunters by punt boats to the duckblinds throughout the marshes. After a buffet lunch, members

and guests often spend afternoons by the replace or inlounge of the recently rebuilt clubhouse. The new clubh

has maintained traditions and furnishings from the rich lcy of Winous Point.Members and guests then change to formal attire for the

ning meal. As has been the tradition for over a century, dinner there is a drawing for the next days choice of hunlocations. The wind vane on the roof is connected to a cpass in the ceiling of the drawing room, indicating the dtion of the wind, so that members can better determineprime locations for the next days hunt.

Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, established in 1999, manages close to 5,000 acres in Ottawa and Sandusky coties, including the lands of the Winous Point Shooting CIt has been instrumental in protection of habitats, controinvasive species, and supporting and funding wildlife and

logical research at Winous Point and in the surrounding cmunities of Northwest Ohio. Each summer interns from OState University reside in the dorm at Winous Point and won research projects.
