He added: “We are concerned about the communityand not the battles between our parties.

“This kind of behaviour proves why the ANC is losing votes and not ensuring service delivery.”

Jayanathan said he posed the questions to council because he did not receive feedback from thehousing department despite numerous attempts toseek clarity on the matter.

DA chief whip Sharon Hoosen said there weremany times she attempted to call a point of orderwith eThekwini council speaker Logie Naidoo.

“I did this in the hope of forcing councillor Abrahams to focus on answering the questions as opposed to resorting to cheap politicking and selfpraise.

“People of Tongaat have not received theservices they were promised and they deserve toknow why.

“Instead, Abrahams used that opportunity tohighlight councillor Jayanathan's media profile in local tabloids.”

Hoosen said although the municipality had confirmed an undertaking to assist residents by repairing their informal settlements, to date no assistancewas brought to the affected residents.

When the Weekly questioned Abrahams onwhether building materials were given to the affected families he confirmed it, to date, had not.

Hoosen said it became clear that Gumede referred Jayanathan's questions to Abrahams to divertthe focus from having to answer pertinentquestions.

“It also becomes glaringly obvious that the wardcouncillor tried to cover up the shortfalls of servicedelivery to the people in Tongaat.

“It has been almost a year since the disaster andit is disgraceful that we have to request an updatefrom the municipality, although council has approved funding to assist the affected residents.

“The job has not commenced and while the ANCplay politics with people’s lives, the residents of Tongaat will suffer.”

Speaking to the Weekly, Abrahams lashed out atthe DA saying “they did not have a right to speak onanything at council because they rejected the budget”.

“And with the budget comes the administrationof all aspects of the municipality. The fact that theydid not participate in this process means they shouldnot even comment on these matters. How can theynot approve of a budget that caters for the poor?”

Abrahams did confirm that the storm damagedhousing budget of R44 million was approved for thearea but would only commence once the Gwala'sFarm housing project was completed.

He said he could not give a time frame for thecompletion of projects because of the recent poorweather conditions.

Abrahams added: “Councillor Jayanathan knowswhere my offices are. He could have come to me withthese questions but decided to waste time in council. The DA is not interested in the people. They are tryingto resort to cheap politics before the elections.”

WEEKLY REPORTER

IN just a few short months, Mediclinic Victoria will grow in leaps and bounds withtheir new expansion which is undoubtedlythe most ambitious to date.

In order to continue with the existingoperations without undue disruptions, theexpansion has been planned in three phases.

The first phase is set to be completedby October 2014 and will include a completely new doctor’s consulting block, twomassive levels of parking, and the refurbishment of the lower ground floor of theexisting hospital which will include the reception area.

Hospital manager Jenny Meer said thesecond floor will be rebuilt to accommodate an additional 21 new beds consistingof private and small wards as well as therelocation of the existing Emergency Unitfrom the lower ground floor to the groundfloor.

“Phase two which will commenceshortly afterwards will include the construction of offices for administrative departments and a brand new pharmacy.

“Phase three will include a new multitheatre complex with digital theatres, a

separate surgical ICU as well as additionalwards and facilities. All of the buildings willbe linked with a walkway.”

Meer added that the board and management’s intention is to ensure that theydeliver costeffective health care of the

highest quality, retain a trained and happywork force and exceed patient expectations now and in the future.

“To do this, it is clear that we need thesupport and commitment of the community, patients and doctors in utilising the

hospital services to its full potential. We invite you to walk this short road with us.”

Meer added that they would like tothank Tongova Mews residents, Mr F Shaikand the community for their support andunderstanding during the building project.

RESIDENTS from Magwaveni were ecstaticwhen they found outthey will be receivingbrand new homes aftertheir original homeswere damaged byfloods in 2010/11.

Ward councillorNompumelelo Mabasomade the announcement recently.

Forty six RDP homesare set to be built andconstruction began onMonday.

Mabaso said allhouses will be completely rebuilt. “Ourcontractors are set to finish early next year,” she said.

Over 600 homes were destroyed in 2010/11 byheavy rainfall, hail and storm, leaving thousands ofpeople all over the province homeless.

The KwaZuluNatal cabinet ended up requestingnational support. The national Department of Human Settlement thereafter set a fund aside for alldisaster management victims.

eThekwini Municipality spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said that the delay was caused by the frequentoccurrence of disasters . “Each year disaster management damages escalate millions of rands and witheach area we have had to conduct emergency reliefand rescue efforts before we could begin with theprocess of quantifying the damages,” he said.

I AM not a religious person at all. Ihavenotbeenforover10years,butI respect people who decide to tra-

verse this path. I was, however, bornHindu and participated and practisedin many prayers and religious read-ings.

There has been a lot said about thecelebration of Diwali over the past fewweeks.WhyareHindusbeingwarned? Why

areothercultural groupsnot receivingthesamekindof flack?Thesearesomeof the questions that were asked.

Many Hindu's also felt they took adouble hit with Zapiro's controversialcartoon.

Asurprisinglybusy time forHindu'swhoarenormallynever inany contro-versial spotlight.

I wonder though, are these issuesreally pertinent? I was in my hometown of Stanger over the weekendspending timewith family for the aus-picious day.

My family is strictly Hindu. Therewasaweeklongfast (whichdoesn'tre-ally count because my entire family isvegetarian)andIwasdeniedbreakfastbecause a morning hawan (prayeraround a fire) had to be performedbe-fore any food was consumed.

Thisgotmewondering–howmanyHindusreallysee theday forwhat it is?

Yes, it is easy to say to those notpart of the religion: “It signifies the tri-umph of light over darkness.”

But how many Hindus are actuallyspiritually knowledgeable about thetrue significance of their culture, oftheir scripture, of their belief system?

Actually, why narrow it down toHindus. This applies to Christians,Muslims, Jews, Buddhists...everyone.

Sometimespeople take theirbeliefstoo literally and to heart. What is thetrue purpose of all of these celebra-tions?

Religion has fundamentally tried toteach humanbeings to be kind to eachother. All of them have. Every religionhas commonalities. Be good, do notkill, give to theneedy,seekspiritualen-

lightenment.Andbeforeyoufundamentalists tell

me I knownothing about your religion–youarewrong,Ido.I'vereadallscrip-tures I've named in this column so far.

My point is, why do we get caughtup in the smaller issues like the fire-works? In all honesty, I don't see theneed for it.

All it does ispollute theairandharmpeople and animals. Yes I was youngonceandunderstandthethrillofburst-ing fireworks. But I was taught morethan just that. How many of you havedone that?

How many of you “adults” knowwhat truemeaningofanyreligiousob-servance is?

Once again, it is not just Hindu's.You knowwhat I see?A society of peo-ple who think you can do what youwant six days out of the week but seekGodontheonedayyouheadtochurch, mosque, the temple or synagogue.Wetoo often see it as just another aspectof life like work, family...oh yes, andour religious day.

That is not what it is. The way youbehave toward others is religion. Thisis spirituality. It is your application ofknowledge. It is your action.

This is what your God has tried toshowyou.Don'tgetcaughtupinritualsand observances because it makes nodifference if you are a savage the restof the time.

THE Sharks have announced a new partnership withsports apparel brand BLK in a deal that will run fromJanuary 2014 until December 2018.

This announcement follows other recent sponsorship changes since former Springbok skipper JohnSmit took over as CEO in July.

Kings Park will also be known as GrowthpointKings Park, while Cell C has taken over from Mr Priceas official sponsor of the union.

BLK CEO Tyron Brant said the opportunity tojoin forces with one of the world’s most famous rugby brands provided a perfect platform for BLK toshowcase their technically advanced apparel.

“The Sharks have long been celebrated as a keyglobal rugby brand which is reflected in their relentless pursuit of success both on and off the field,”Brant said.

Smit said they were looking forward to developinga relationship with a brand that has a distinct heritage and understanding of rugby, but more importantly has shown consistent advancements in apparel and a proven record of designing popular supporter ranges across various codes.“BLK epitomise technical advancement, each eliterange they develop represents years of research ingarment innovation and this drive for continual improvement matches our values,” he said.
