Local DA councillor Brian Jayanathan saidhe was surprised that the issue was not mademore public by the council.

He said the closure would place a greaterburden on the affected residents.

Findings criticised by DA>> Ruling party says issues have been resolved

THEDemocraticAlliance (DA) ineThekwini said the AuditorGeneral’s (AG) report into the

2011/2012 financial year onceagainpaints a bleak picture for the eThek-wini Municipality. This comes after the report revealedover R40 million worth of businesswas conducted between the munici-pality,councillorsandofficialsduringthe accounted financial year.Of this total amount, R7.5 millionwent to councillors alone.

The AG found that this occurred dueto insufficient steps taken by thecouncil to tighten up its Supply ChainManagement (SCM) policy.According to the report, eThekwinihad worsened in comparison to theprevious financial year.In a statement, DA caucus leaderDean Macphereson said that as longas councillors receive a slap on thewrist for doingbusinesswith themu-nicipality, they will not be deterred.

“Fines will simply factor in as a

costofsale intheirbusinessventures.Equally, it is quite clear that any offi-cialwhodoesbusinesswitheThekwi-ni should be fired yet they merely of-tenjustgetoffwithonlywrittenwarn-ings.”

“TheDAhas repeatedly requestedfora reviewof thispolicy tobeunder-taken by an independent board tomake recommendations on how itcanbeimprovedbut,todate,thesere-quests have been ignoredby theANCcaucus.

“For as long as the situation remainswhere councillors and officials feel itis easy to do business with the stateand the consequences are flimsy atbest,theproblemofcorruptionandil-licit business dealings at the expen-sive of service delivery will continue.

“TheDAwillsubmitamotiontothenext full council sitting to ensure thatan independent board is set up to re-view the SCMpolicy and tomake rec-ommendations within 3 months.”

SpeakingtotheWeekly,ANCcoun-

cillor, Chocks Arunajallam said thematter had been put to rest.

“TheDAisonceagain trying touseamatterthathadbeenresolvedbytheruling party to gain political mileage.“The ANC and its structures initiatedthe report andhave instituted appro-priate action against those foundwanting.

“Therehasalsobeenanammend-ed code of conduct that will now fur-ther guide officials and councillors,”he said.

‘PEOPLE’S power’was the call from the Ton-gaatAnti-DrugForum(TADF)when,togetherwith community organisations and individu-als, they led a motorcade through Buffels-dale,ChelmsfordHeights,FlamingoHeights,Belvedere and Belgate on Saturday.

TADF’s Harold Maistry said the recentscourge of drug activity in the greater Ton-gaat area prompted the organisation to con-front the issue and ‘make a difference in thelives of our youth’.

“The recent introduction of sugars andwhoonga is a serious concern in our commu-nity. This highly-addictive drug has found itsway into the lives of our children - some ofthem as young as 12-years-old.”

He said that known drug dealers, whose

details were supplied by the community andverified through proper checks, were visitedby theparticipants in themotorcade.Thepo-lice were also present.

“The message to these drug dealers wasvery clear.ThecommunityofTongaatwill nottolerate drugdealing inour town.Wewill notsit idly while the lives of our children are atrisk. Tongaat should be drug free. ‘People’sPower’ will win the fight against drugs. Weare prepared to take the fight right to theirdoorsteps,” he said.

Maistry, on behalf of the TADF, thankedcommunity organisations and individualswho supported the campaign.

al friend of Nair eloquently empha-sised a lack in the education sectorandhighlightedtheimportanceof theconstitution–adocumentthatisoftenblindly referred to by many politicalopportunists of our current day.

Yacoob ensured that all under-stood what heroes such as Billy Nairreallystoodfor.Hehighlightedstrongleadershipandtheabilitytostaycom-mitted to the common man as someof Nair's redeeming qualities.

One wonders where leadership ofNair's calibre has gone in 2013. Lo-cally, we find councillors and publicofficials dragging their feet seldompaying attention to serious challeng-es of the people. Instead, they tend tobe reactive. Never proactive. Never

attempting to take to the streets andfight crime, or uplift education. Ask abig smile of these “leaders” however, and they are ever willing to strike upposes thatwould surprise evena sea-soned Facebooking teenager.

Ourleadersarefarfromthecalibreof a simple, humourous, committedmansuchasBillyNair. His lackofself-ish gain and constant strength andsacrifice is a symbol of a lost genera-tion of realmen. Perhaps our leaderswould do well to understand the his-tory of the liberation struggle and itstruesymbolism.Becauseas it stands,in 2013, our leaders lack any convic-tion or true commitment to you...thepeople.

EDITORIALCOMMENT

I attended the Women’s Day Col-loquium on Sunday last week atthe Shree Veeraboga EmperumalTemple (SVET) in Gandhi’s Hill,Tongaat.

The members of SVET invit-ed many high profile speakers toaddress the audience on theirtheme “Yesterday, Today, Tomor-row”. It truly was an enthralling, exciting and eventful day.

All the speakers used thetheme to expand on women’s rolein society, their contributionsover many decades and the lega-

cy left for the present gene-ration.

Those of us who were fortu-nate to be present were inspiredand entertained from beginningto end.

SVET members must be com-mended and congratulated fortheir loving, caring and sharingattitude.
