Happy February to us! February is a short month, but it’s a month full of celebrations. February 1

What I’m looking forward to is the guild’s evening meeting on February 6, 2019. We will be celebrating each other. It’s just for fun, no speak-er, just us. We will make Valentines and donate them to those who need a little more heart in their lives. Bring items you wish to embellish yours with. I’ll bring lace and buttons. To All My Friends at CPQG ---

My house is a shambles. There are boxes everywhere. I’ve made 14 trips to Good Will. This all looks eerily familiar. Oh, yeah, that’s right. We are moving once again. This time, to Beau-

mont.

Mark was kind enough to allow me some space in the newsletter to say goodbye. I cannot

thank you enough for all the gifts I have received from all of you. You have given me ac-ceptance, tolerance, kindness, willingness, and more laughter than I can shake a stick at. When people have asked me, “Why do you belong to Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild?” I always an-

swer, “Because that’s where all my friends are.”

I will miss you more than I can say.

With a grateful heart,

Mary Goodman

Please join us on February 6 for a valentine’s party. In addition to our regular show and tell, please share your favorite valentine quilt or a quilt you made for your someone special. Our rep at large - Kay Paul – will lead us in making valentines which will be given to a worthy group (she is accepting) suggestions for the group. Ad-ditional details are available in her article. For the party please bring your favorite finger food. Drinks will be

provided.

On February 21, Suzi Parron (www.barnquiltinfo.com) will give a lecture on Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement. Barn quilts are 2 x2 ft. wood paintings of quilt blocks which are frequently seen in the north

central U.S

There will not be a March 6 meeting due to a church holiday.

On March 21, local artist Cynthia Regone (www.Cajunclassicsquilts.com) will present Mixed Technique – It’s Just

Like Gumbo.

Programs by Joan Bell

Workshops by Darleen Patin

Workshops:

Thursday, February 21 will be the “Barn Quilt Painting” workshop by Suzi Perron. At this

workshop, we will produce a 2 x2 foot painting of a quilt block on wood. It is produced just

like the barn paintings seen in rural areas of America---just not as big as the real barn

paintings. Prepared-ready-to-paint wood, paints, and brushes will be provided. You may want

to bring a full apron or a shirt to cover your clothing as messiness sometimes happens. Suzi

has patterns of the most common quilt blocks ready to use. You can bring your own pattern

to use, but try to keep it simple. The fewer the pieces in your block, the easier it will be to fin-

ish. Every student will leave class with their own barn painting to decorate any room. We still

have spots available. Class will be from 1 – 4 pm on Feb. 21. Cost is $50.

Thursday, March 21. Cynthia Ragone will conduct our March workshop. She will be using

techniques that follow up on her presentation “Mixed Technique—it’s just like gumbo”. A

small quilt –Patriotic Stars-- will be made in the workshop. The workshop project is suitable

for either a wall hanging or a pillow (without the borders). It has a wool felt center done in

appliqué and borders done in pieced stars. We will complete the center at workshop and Cyn-

thia will do a demo on the stars. No sewing machine required as we cut out the pieces for the

center and work on that in class. A completed sample will be shown at our next meeting. Par-

ticipants will get the pattern for the wall hanging and materials to make it. If you would like to

view Cynthia’s work, her website is cajunclassicsquilts.com. Class fee is $20 and the kit is

$30.

The Feb, night meeting will be a finger food pot luck, followed by making Valentines. Many materials will be

provided, but members need to bring a few things.

What to bring: glue guns and glue, hand sewing tools, lace, any kind of embellishment, fabric marking pens,,

etc. ,etc. etc.

We are not sure yet where we will take the valentines, so if you have a suggestion, please let Kay Paul know.

Hopefully this will be a fun activity that will bring some love and joy into someone's life

If you have a special person to whom to give your valentine, that would be awesome.

Also, it would be nice if your show and share items are hearts and love related.

If you are unable to bring a food item, COME ANYWAY. There is always plenty to eat.

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Minutes of the December 5, 2018 Board Meeting

Approved January 9, 2019 The meeting was called to order by Rebecca Trevino, President at 3 pm at the Hickory Inn BBQ location on FM1092 in Missouri City.

Board Members in attendance: Rebecca Trevino, Cathy Price, Diane Hickey, Kay Paul, Darlene Pat-

in, Diama Cortez, Grace Clarke, Barbara Young, Joan Bell, and Judy Wolter. A quorum was present.

Committee Members in attendance: Mark Towle, Sakeenah Mubashshir and Beth Duffy.

The Minutes of the November 14, 2018 Board meeting were approved as emailed. The Treasurer’s Report for November 2018 was approved. Committee Reports: Storage Space Relocation- Cathy Price passed out a current layout of the Storage unit with American Storage which the guild occupies a space that is 10 x 15 wide. Cathy stated that we are approx. paying the monthly rate of $224.00 for this unit and it’s under Barbara Baxter’s name. There was discussion on moving to a smaller unit, such as a 10 x 10 or 9 x 7. Cathy suggested that someone should check out other storage compa-nies or stay with American. Grace Clarke volunteered to call American on rates and they quoted her for a 10 x 15 at$163.50 with no deposit plus 2 months 50 % off with a $22 administration fee. A 10 x 10 unit would cost $121.50 and insurance is required for $9 to $12 a month depending on the unit size. Rebecca stated that we need to value the items in the unit plus the quilt show items for the insurance. Grace mentioned that an indi-vidual/primary name would have to be on the unit and could also have a secondary name. Grace also called Texas Parkway and received the quote for a 7 x 12 unit for $124 and a 10 x 12 is $155. Judy Wolter suggested that we could rent a 10 x 10 space for 6 months to see if that size would work. Rebecca stated that the storage unit contract ends in February according to Diane Hickey and we need to decide sometime in January. Standing Rules- Rebecca Trevino reported that she and the committee will meet later this month to discuss the 3 changes for updating the Standing Rules. Discussion Points: Treasurer Computer Programs: Rebecca Trevino asked Mark Towle what software he would recommend, Mark said Quicken the Business version and to go with a new subscription for 2 years. Judy Wolter made a motion to have Pauline Manes decide on what software she recommends for treasury and Diane Hickey sec-ond the motion. Rebecca said we will have a short evening meeting before the holiday party starts and will limit speakers to programs/workshops and community service. Rebecca stated that February 6 on the tri-fold was a TBD and we should have a Pot Luck Valentine Party. Discussion ideas: Valentine theme workshop, make post card valentines, or a heart quilt. Kay Paul said we could donate the valentines to seniors or Meals on Wheels. Barbara Young said there we some heart kits in the storage unit we could use. Rebecca agreed that we could use those kits. Kay made a motion to have a Val-entine party and Cathy Price second, all agreed. Rebecca asked if we want to continue having evening meetings and if so, how often. Joan Bell made a motion to discuss changes to the evening meetings and Darlene Patin seconded the motion. Cathy Price reported that 4 members plus the board are usually at the evening meetings. Grace said there were no speakers set up yet for the next year. Barbara Young stated that during the winter time everyone dashes out early. Grace sug-gested that in the summer months we could do school house because so many members have talent and that would save the guild money. Diama Cortez suggested we have evening meetings quarterly and Kay Paul sug-gested bi-monthly. Rebecca asked Cathy if there was a rule or by-law that members would have to vote to change evening meetings. Cathy read the by-laws which stated 1 board meeting and 1 business meeting. Mark Towle asked why do we have evening meetings, is it for those that can’t make the day meetings? Joan said when there is a good speaker during the evenings, more members will come. Grace stated that Debbie Gardner needed to be present for continued discussion since she will be the acting president next year. Grace said her and Barbara Young would write up a proposal for bi-monthly meetings, quarterly meetings and no evening meetings for next meeting.

Rebecca reported that she received a letter from HISD public school for the Young Women’s College Prepara-tory School and they are starting a Girls Quilt Club. They are asking for donations of fabric, irons, notions and sewing machines, this would be a onetime donation. All suggested to have Rebecca ask members if they are interested to donate and she will give them copy of letter. Those that are interested will need to bring items in January. Rebecca stated that the next board meeting should be scheduled for January 9, 2019 at 3pm (suggested be-cause of holiday). All agreed. Board/Committee Reports: President-elect: Debbie Garner was absent. Membership: Cathy Price had no updates on membership. Program Chair: Joan Bell made a motion for Glenda Wilder to be approved as a speaker for Wednesday evening on May 1, 2019 titled: ‘My quilting Journey, I mapped my way and you can too”. The cost is $250. Cathy Price seconded the motion. Joan said we need to change the date for Lisa Patterson’s lecture, it will be on May 16, 2019 and the workshop on Saturday May 19, 2019. Program Chair-elect: Grace Clarke reported the 2020 raffle quilt will be a medallion winter theme with red, black, gold and green colors and the storage unit has 20 kits of Christmas fabric that could be used. Workshop Co-Chair: Judy Wolter reported there are 5 spots available for the Shop Hop and may open those to nonmembers. She will start ordering the tickets. Workshop Chair-elects: Barbara Young had no report. Treasurer: Diane Hickey had no report. Representative-at-Large: Kay Paul asked if there will be a meeting in January to decide if there will be a quilt show. Rebecca said there will be a show of some kind. There was some discussion on a Gala but those are expensive and also lots of drinking. Diane Hickley said the auction at the Quilt Show people were saying the bids for the quilts were very high. Secretary: Diama Cortez had nor report. Community Service: Sakeenah Mubashshir reminded us about the Community Service workshop on Jan-uary 17. Editor: Mark Towle stated that the deadline for the newsletter is Monday December 24. Joan made a motion to adjourn the board meeting and Darlene second the motion. The Board meet-

ing was adjourned at 5:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted, Diama Cortez, Secretary Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild

Rebecca discussed where the money comes from for the guild. We collect members’ dues and also the dona-tion quilt but our needed money usually comes from doing a quilt show. The cost of a quilt show is twice as much to have than we actually make. The board has set up a committee to find recommendations on proceed-ing if a quilt show can happen. Pauline Manes is in contact with someone from the Missouri City office to help find a new location. Also another option to save money is to reduce or eliminate evening meetings, we need members input. Grace Clarke said we could save $2,700 if we eliminate evening speakers or we could share speakers with other guilds. Grace reported that outreach is our main purpose and our guild has many mem-bers with talent and knowledge to be shared, and we could probably have workshops on Saturday if needed. Rebecca stated this discussion is not a resolution and all of your input is gladly appreciated. Anyone can come to a board meeting if they wish.
