New Bethel Baptist Church

An ordination ceremony was held recently for i:~ Mary_E. ~ at New e el Baptist Church, with the pastor, Rev. Ronald L. Lowery, presiding.

The greetings and occasion were given by Rev. Lowery.

The opening selection was given by the Mass Choir of New Bethel, Rolesville, with Rev. Ena Burrows as organist.

The scripture for the occasion was read by Rev. Dazale Kearney of Old Liberty Baptist Church. In-vocation was led by Rev. Louise H. Montague of New Bethel.

The voice from the Wake Asso-ciation was given by Rev. Otis Byrd, pastor of First Baptist Church, Holly Springs.

Rev. Ronald Lowery introduced the speaker. After another selec-tion by the Mass Choir, the ordina-tion proclamation was given by Rev. Byrd . His text was taken

The following ministers gave the charge: To the candidate-Rev. S.L. Suitt; to the church-Rev. Le-roy Miller, brother of Rev. Mary E. Walker.

The presentation of the Bible was done by Rev. W.A. Morgan; the hymnal was presented by Rev. Ena Burrows, and the robe was presented by Rev. Dazale Kearney.

The ordination prayer and lay-ing on of hands was done by Rev. James Lee.

Rev. Ronald L. Lowery pre-sented the certificate of ordination.

A reception was held in the fel-lowship hall immediately after the servicP..

Rev. Walker is the president of the Missionary Circle of New Be-thel. Baptist Church, Rolesville; president of the Missionary Union of the Wake County Organization· assistant teacher of the second Bible class of New Bethel.

She also 1s in Bible classes at Shaw Divinity School, Raleigh; is a member of Rosebud Chapter No. 628, Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliated, Rolesville: where she serves as chaplain. ShE

~,Local groups help co I am writing about an article in the

Greensboro :\ ews and Record which con-cerned federal housing money in High Point. The article tated that a group called Carolina Hou ing Partnership was disappointed because a group in Greens-boro was awarded funding to build low-income housing in High Point. The article stated that no other non-profit groups could be found to take the grant in Decem-ber 1993. This tatement is not true. :\o one appro\'ed the non-profit churches. nor the non-profit l\.linisters· Conference of High Point. I was president of the confer-ence at that time. and am ,·ice pre ident at the present time.

Who i thi group: I understand that there is a board of busines men. a banker. minister and a city councilman. :'.\ly ques-tion is why the churches and the l\.linisters· Conference were not gi,·en a chance to ob-,---__

tain the grants since we are non-profit groups and ha\'e the people of High Point's interests at heart. and pa tor ome 38 churches in thi city. It was the '.\!inis-ters· Conference who called a new confer-ence a year or so ago to bring focus on the problems of housing. \'iolence. crime. recreation. minority hiring in City Hall. the Police Department. Fire Department. etc.: a well as :'.\Iartin Luther King Jr. being honored with a treet or highway in High Point. along with Lawrence Gra\'e . Daisy Raphael and others. So again, why was the conference here passed O\'er" Or the ~AACP for that matter? I am glad to see the High Point city go\'ernment mo\'ing forward to impro\'e housing. parks. crime. mo\'e-men ts against drug problems and rio-lence.
