Crop Production and Management

Most plants make their own food through the process of photosynthesis but animals feed on plants or other

animals to get energy. When we cultivate same kind of plants on a large scale at one place it's called Crop.

Depending upon the seasons there are two major types of crops-

1.Kharif crops - Sown in rainy season (June to September).

Example - maize, soybean ,groundnut ,cotton etc.

2.Rabi crops- Sown in winter season (October to March).

Example - wheat, gram ,mustard ,pea etc.

Basic practices of crop production which are followed while growing a crop-:

1 .Preparation of soil - To loosen and turn the soil.

2. Sowing - Planting of seeds of a crop in soil.

3.Adding manure and fertilizers - Adding essential nutrients to soil for growth and development of plants.

Manure or compost is a natural substance obtained by decomposition of animal and plant residues. It

provides a lot of humus to the soil and is organic.

fertilizer is a man made inorganic salt which does not provide any humus to the soil.. NPK is a good

example of fertilizers.

Biofertilizers- These are nitrogen fixing organisms that are widely used in organic farming.

Example - Rhizobium which is found in the root nodules of leguminous plants.

4 .Irrigation - Supplying water to plants at regular intervals.

Sources of irrigation are Wells ,tube Wells ,ponds ,lakes ,rivers, dams etc.

5 . Protection from weeds - Undesirable plants that grow naturally along with the crop are called weeds

.Removal of weeds is called weeding. This can be done using weedicides.

6 . Harvesting - Cutting of crop after it matures is called harvesting.

Harvesting can be done manually using threshing and winnowing.

Threshing is separating chaff from grain by beating the crop against a stone or wooden bar.

After threshing, winnowing separates the husk from the seeds by blowing air through it .In this process the

husk flies away and the seeds fall down.

7 . Storage - Keeping grains or produce safe from rats insects microorganisms and moisture.

Questions:

Q.1 Rhizobium is found in root nodules of which type of plants?

Q.2 What is NPK?

Q.3 What is a crop?

Q.4 What are the main types of crops in India?

Q.5 What is sowing?

Q.6 What are fertilizers?

Q.7 What are weeds?

Q.8 What is Winnowing?

Q.9 What is generally used for making compost?

Q.10 What is Irrigation?

NETWORKING CONCEPTS

In our daily life, we come across different types of networks. Let us understand this concept by some

examples:

Network of roads, railway lines, canals, etc.

Communication network of telephone system, which enables us to talk to anyone, anywhere,

anytime.

Network of Banks/ATMs (AutomatedTeller Machines)

Radio/Television network broadcast programs live across theglobe

Video conferencing allows discussions between people at distant/far off places

Internet is an outcome of cyber networking. Imagine life without networking ... no phone, no

television, no internet, etc. Computer networks have extended the power of a computer beyond

the expanse of a room.

NETWORKING Acomputer network can bedefined as a group of computersand other peripheral devices that are

linked together for the purpose of sharing data and hardware resources. For example, if one of the

computersin a network has a printer attached to it, then all the computers in that network can

access the printer and use it toprint the documentsas shown in Figure, whereComputerA and B ina

networkcan give theprint command to the printer attached with Computer C.

Figure: A Computer Network

The computersina networkcan communicate with each other as well as work independently.

Each computer in a network is called a Node. The computers in a network can be linked through

cables, telephone lines, radio waves, or infra-red light beams.

ADVANTAGES OF NETWORKING

Networking in computers brings efficiency, economy, and effectiveness in an

organization.

EFFICIENT USE OF STORAGE MEDIA

It is better to store a shareable application data on a network drive than a copy of the

application on each user's storage device. It is better to have one big hard disk in the server

than to have small hard disks in different computers.

PRESERVING INFORMATION

It is difficult to maintain regular backups on a number of stand-alone computers. When you

keep backups on a central location, you have one place to look for the lost information.

REDUCTION IN HARDWARE COSTS

In a network, the hardware devices that are not used very often, like modems, printers, scanners,

CD-writers, etc. can be shared. This reduces the cost of the hardware.

EFFICIENCY

Inanetwork,thedeletion,modification,orupgradationofthesoftware/dataistobedone ata single point

only. This brings more efficiency and effectiveness into a working system.

REDUNDANCY

A network reduces the need for hard copies of all documents. By sharing the soft copy of a file

over the network, the need to share paper copies of reports or any other information can be

eliminated or greatly reduced.

QUICKEST DOCUMENT DELIVERY

Networking provides a facility to instantly deliver soft copies from one computer to the other

computers throughout the world.
